Cheers for that Gavin - i'll do some digging regarding why the engine materialised. I reckon it was front ended but as you say; there shouldn't be too much damage otherwise they wouldn't re reselling it. (i hope!) Cheers, Adam

This love of the VR malarky has cost me thousands to date. A mate of mine with a Mk4 gti is always going on about me wasting my money but i feckin love throwing cash at her. The end product (if there ever will be an end!...) is well worth the investment (contradiction there as it's by no means an investment). An upgrade or rebuild is vital as she's currently burning more oil than those crazy yanks!
-
In the grand scheme of things mate - it's going to cost around £2K - £3K in any case. I'm thinking fook it - she's getting herself an R32! 4WD conversion next following a supercharger upgrade. I might try to buy a house somewhere in between all that.... maybe not though! Adam

I was just checking out the other current thread re a 24v V6 conversion and it sounds like the conversion complexities are going to result in a massive labour charge. I was thinking about buying a MK1 gti but i guess that plan will have to be put on ice for the time being....
-
Looks like it's going to be the R32 then.... I recall reading on an older thread that I will need a new clutch - is this accurate? My only real concern about converting to the R32 is potential engine damage from the original car - what's the likelihood of there being any damage to the engine? I appreciate that it's difficult to answer without having seen it but has anyone had any real issues with an engine from a write off? I'll be getting a full quote on monday for the whole lot so I'll keep you posted re the costs. Watch this space.... Cheers, Adam

Well, 107,000 miles later and she's finally started to show signs of old age. Cylinder's 1 and 6 are letting oil in so a rebuild is required. This has left me with a bit of a dilemma though. Which of the below would you guys recommend?... Option 1 - complete rebuild with a gas flowed head (cost circa £2000) Option 2 - R32 engine (cost TBD....) She's currently all schricked up with the VGI and a set of 268s. I've spent thousands on her and i want to ensure that i make the right decision. She currently pumps out 220bhp; i'm hearing figures of 235bhp with the gas flowed head and 260bhp with the R32. Can anyone validate these? Cheers, Adam

Anyone any ideas as to how I can open my bonnet without using the handle? The bonnet cable has snapped away from the LHS bonnet catch. I've tried to go via the grill but the bloody thing snapped off even further. £60 (exc VAT) hourly labour charge awaits me at VW Corkhills if you boys don't come up trumps! Cheers, Adam

TSR advised me that i'd neet to de-cat my 93 VR if i was to go for the supersprint manifold.... You might want to double check before you buy and it's also worth pointing out that if you do go for the 6-branch, you might need a futher remap which will cost you even more cash!

Hi, The expansion tank in my VR is playing silly buggers. Every second day (after only 10 miles of driving each day), the expansion tank is empty and upon opening releases a substantial amount of steam/pressure even though it has been cooled over night. I am unable to detect any leaks in the cooling system and the engine is running fine. The running temp is also normal. Any ideas? Cheers

Joe M - no, dubsport. I haven't been able to scan the plot yet as the old boys scanner is fooked. Why 223.5bhp "suspected"?......
-
Based on the above, i reckon the pain experienced fitting my shrick manny and 268's was well worth it. I got 218bhp and 230lbs or torque - i reckon it will push 220bhp now it's been run in and had a full service. Next on the hit list is the supersprint 6 branch manifold at the bargain price of £550...Watch this space... Niko - hope you see improved gains with a new tank of juice.
-
I think you boys have convinced me. I'm getting dupsport to price one up for me but if we can get a GB going with some discount incorporated then i'm keen to get involved. It does look like an awesome piece of engineering - well worth the £550....!

Hi y'all, I have finally recovered from the trauma of fitting a schrick manifold and 268 cams to my VR and i'm now ready to get involved with some more engine mod's. I was in dubsport today getting a service (went well other than new bushes required at the rear) and was chatting to some dude about the 6 branch outlet manifold he had on his VR. I've just spent the last 30 mins searching the forum for historical threads surrounding outlet manifolds but only managed to find 'rsr outlet manifolds' threads for the G60. Anyone got any advice? links? ideas? recommendations for TSR's kit? The bro is telling me to ditch the idea and go for the 3.1L rebore but i'm not convinced as petrol consumption has already rocketed... Cheers, Adam

Cheers - i'll give the above a go and hopefully i can approach a junction without having to start the engine again
-
Did anyone experience stalling issues when they converted to a VGI and 268s? It's stalled about 25 times in just 2 days of driving! - i suspect the ISV needs adjusting. It happens everytime the revs drop when you change gear / coast to a junction. Is there an easy way to resolve this issue?....
-
The nightmare is finally over. Let's just hope we all don't end up in the same boat when i go for the supercharger at the end of the year! :) Cheers again for all the help.

The conclusion..... Week 2 - Thursday. It's done! :thumbleft: I'm not sure i can believe it though. I got final confirmation late last night. She's now pumping out 219BHP! I'm very pleased with the figures and there's apparently a sh1tload more torque from 2000rpm. The explanation: The solenoid valve on the manifold had a hairline fracture which needed to be replaced although the main issue was the broken plastic sender on the cam (i can't believe that "supercharged" + kev have only just suggested this - 2 weeks too late though! you could have saved me a fair wack in labour charges). The seal apparently broke and the magnet fell out - the magnet is needed as it provides a north and south polarity for the CPS. Geoff said it was the first new thing he had learnt about a corrado's engine in 4 years. Here's the bill: 3 Ls of Oil, Hosing, Clippers, Inlet Man Gasket, Throttle Housing Gasket, Rocker cover gasket, Coolant, fuel, tappets, solenoid valve, HT leads, re-map and labour. The cost: £1100 (2 full days labour charged as opposed to the 5 actually used) Still on the excessive side but i'm just happy the problem has now been resolved. Cheers to everyone for their input and watch this space for some dynoplots.... Also, to anyone who's interested; i'm considering selling the film rights to this 'journey'. You can have them for £1100 ono....
-
Gareth - are you talking about the Cam Position Sensor? If so, they have apparently already investigated that! Cracked solenoid is the latest (but arguably not the greatest)...
-
i've got an ambulance on standby and my old man has the trading standards on hold should they be required....
-
The million dollar question! which i am unfortunately unable to answer at this stage......
-
But if that's the case then why did the car produce 170bhp when they reverted back to the stock manifold and cams? The car will apparently be ready tonight........
-
The latest... Week 2 - Wednesday (after having dropped the car off on Thursday 13th Jan....) They have detected a crack in the solenoid - this was the only information i was given as the guy on the phone was mechanically illiterate. Any ideas what he was referring to as i'm equally mechanically illiterate?! ECU?.........
-
Hi Gareth - Dubsport confirmed that the schrick and cams were fine. They have reverted back to the stock configuration and it's still not running right. It must be an ECU issue if everything else is now stock...... The kit was second hand and i did get some documentation - the guys seemed pretty straight and they delivered the goods promptly. The issue lies with something else though and no one has a bl00dy clue as to what it could be - Geoff is apparently scratching his head  i'm lead to believe that this doesn't happen too often.
-
Kev - yes, they checked the cam sensor wiring. And they checked the timing as well as suggested by Dr_mat aka basil_fawlty. The power doesn't pick up after 4000RPM. I haven't seen the dyno plots yet but I have been assured that they do exist....unless of course the "dubsport dog" has eaten them...... I'm just hoping they kept a copy of the old map. Does it sound like an ECU issue?
