  1. Establised garage should have both the above but still managed to send me out with a problem. So not easy to the experts, what could they have done wrong, is there a knack in winding back the caliper or something, could they have damaged the piston part, like said was not sticking beforehand, just the discs were shabby and pads where getting low.
  2. I'd rather not risk my lack of knowledge after the other half and the wee man ;) I would do two spanner haynes stuff as you normally don't need much in the way of tools, brakes is generally the next level up and requires the right bits and pieces, wind back tool being one of them I believe amongst other things
  3. NOt sure how you mean that as he was not just a mechanic, he was a good friend! That's beside the point, I just mentioned that as he was always spot on and knew his job well and was a perfectionist
  4. I've got a stack of joinery related tools and don't have space to start collecting mechanics tools, given the fact I'm not really mechanically minded I'd rather make sure brakes are done properly...saying that as it turns out I'm asking could I have done it worse....perhaps not but my wife uses the car a lot and my son as passenger so dont mind paying a qualifed person to carry out work. However I don't expect to come out a good few pounds lighter but with a car worse than it went in!
  5. Ever since our mechanic got killed in an accident I've yet to find a garage who actually gets it right, there is always something! Is there something that garages get wrong when doing rear pads/discs on VW's? We always seems to get them back with a stuck caliper/s. Just picked car up and brakes are rubbish, even with new pads on the front, rear caliper stuck/binding, I only drove 6 miles or so and the disc was on fire! Front discs seem to be quite hot too. What should the labour time/ charge be for rear discs/pads and front pads? Wouldn't mind them taking longer to do it bloody right!
  6. Is that a case of different dealer prices then as I called two nearest us and they both came up with £55 Both needed old pump back and one said that the pumps they supplied were refurbished...sound right?
  7. Seems to be a difference in opinions...some say avoid the plastic pump, infact just about all I have read on here do....until now that is :) Now I'm in two minds again...I was going to be the metal Febi pump!
  8. And the rest  Mine cost £35 when I did it. They after £55 now, forget if that was inclusive of VAT, they also want your old pump in exchange. How long ago did you do yours
  9. Ok. Down to the dealers tomorrow then. The ones I have been to only do exchange so you could well find they want your goosed pump
  10. Drove in there today at about 11am to see if there was any fixing/fastener places and noticed there was a sqaud of motors.. I was in the 4mo (standard), could have compared it
  11. Autodata, handly looking tool, where can that be had from or is it a trade program
  12. Are that bleed kits easy to use, for the novice, how much fluid do you need for the likes of the VR6. Is the idea to remove all fluid and replace with fresh completly. If you have excesss travel in your pedal is this normally a sign the brakes would need bled?
  13. Does anyone know what the difference is with calipers made by ATE and stamped with 54 as opposed to ones made by Lucas and stamped 54? Will they be the same or does the maker tell you that they are for different set ups? Also how do you know a 288 carrier from a 312, is it really obvious guessing it is
  14. gogsboy

    Oil for VR6?

Think the dealers are using synta platinum now, not sure of the price
  15. Does anyone know if these can are interchangeable with the Corrado, they are 288mm ones as I think the newer V5's had 312mms but not sure if thats the ones people upgrade with on Corrados
  16. Didn't seem to be that price when I looked?
  17. The hose part with the clip on it is not included with the PCV part, imagine ford could supply though, anyone?
  18. Is that all compatible kit then? All VR's identical as far as chain parts go? Can this also be bought from Ford
  19. Does it have this number on it 021129101A ? Ford part number I got was 7364573
  20. Is this not the PCV breather or something along that lines, I needed to replace it and VW only sell you the whole thing but ford can get you individual parts.
  21. Have read bits and pieces about this and wondered if anyone has the part numbers for the crack pipe itself and the seals that go with it, if they hare not included as have read different things about that. Also read that best to replace some hoses in the vicinity, is this the case for sure and if so what are they and numbers. I've tried that EKTA but the diagrams are hard work to say the least and I'm no mechanic anyway. Can you reallistically do this without taking front end to pieces? I had a mechanic replace the thermo housing and he didn't seem to have to remove a great deal, think he had a knack a working in a tight spot! Also is there anything else worth doing, as if I had known about crack pipe before then would have had it done same time as thermo housing. Water pump maybe and if so, is it best to go to stealers, seen some debate about plastic and metal impellors, surely metal best? Also is there anything to be wary or, read someting about supporting engine and replacing bolts that ones removed have to be replaced with new? Oh and can the bits be had from Ford as that's where I got the thermo housing and such like. Thanks
  22. Sounds a cracking deal then as I recall the miles were only about 73k or so. He either dropped his price or you drove a hard bargain
  23. Bugger, I was just about to call the guy about this, seen it advertised before but had to go to work out the country for over 5 weeks.....didn't expect it to sit as long as it did. What did he let it go for in the end, was asking about 3.5k when I first seen it about 40 days ago
