I need a car for work, and mines it! Bout 200 miles a week, quite a bit in traffic. Hence the mocal oil cooler! :)
-
Try Castrol GTX - High Mileage, thats 15w 40. About 5.5 litres should do it I think, but I've heard probs with engine flushes so I'd be careful. Do a search for probs.

what is it with people damaging aqua blue VRs?!
ardandy replied to gradeAfailure's topic in General Car Chat
Aqua Blue! Arrrrrgh! Don't say that! Even my exhuast gasses are coming out blue now! -
My plastic bits on the sill are looking like they've seen better days. Theres the usual suspects on ebay, just wondering if theres any drawbacks to metal ones? Will they go on as flush? Anyone got piccies of some? Cheers.

This was £14 from halfords for the same amount.
-
Wouldn't they have thought of that when bringing it out? doesn't say 'summer only' or anything. But I know what you mean with it being 15W.

Someones just give me a new 5litre tub of Castrol GTX - High Mileage, it's 15W 40. Says its designed for higher mileage engines etc, just wondered if it'll suit the VR? Not knowing fully the 15W 40 ratings, what drawback or benefit would there be by using this. Using Synta 10w 40 at the mo, but as you prob know by now, getting blue smoke on the overrun.

Pretty much, and No. (from what I've read) When I bought my car I said to myself it'd be the best example of a standard VR6 I could get (when finished of course!), so on that hat, I'd prob go for a rebuild myself. Also easier on the insurance too I suppose.
-
The situation: My VR6 is blue smoking one the overrun, I can go down a hill say for only quarter of a mile and then when I get to to the bottom and accelerate it plumes blue smoke out. The longer the overrun, the more the smoke. Doesn't do it when I'm booting or tootling around (at least not yet). Questions: 1, If it is the pistion ring thingy, if I get it sorted, will that be it then for that problem, or can others arise when getting that work done? (if that makes sense). Basically, is it worth spending £600 on getting them sorted out on a 14 year old engine, or save up for longer and go for a complete rebuild, which would mean I wouldn't have any engine probs after that. I dont want to spend £600 and then find I need a rebuild for some other reason later on. 2, Can a garage tell if its a piston ring issue without it costing me a fortune? What sort of diag price? 3, My car didn't do this 2 week ago, and now after 0.4 miles down a hill on overrun, I almost covered the car behind me in blue smoke when setting off. Surely somethings gone? Is piston ring a sudden or gradual change? 4, Will I ever go a month without fixing something? I'm going to try the Silkolene oil solution next and see what happens.

Is having a 12v rebuild as good as having a new engine? My only prob with the 24v is that the engine will be used/unknown?
-
I just want to know one (ok two) things, and I think a lot do too. Price for 24v conversion = £??? Price for 12v full rebuild = £??? All in, if a garage has to do the work. Obviously it's an estimate, not expecting a real quote or anything. Also, if I got a conversion, wouldn't having a second hand 24v engine cause more long term probs compared to a rebuilt 12v? Isn't a full rebuild almost as good as getting a new engine?
-
Isn't a full engine rebuild & rebore £2300? I'm assuming their engine is rebuilt?
-
OK, mines doing the overrun thing now after 0.2-0.3 miles of overrun. Does this seem excessive?
-
Pics of a recent engine bay clean. Looks much better now. Going to concentrate on the outside before I get to sorting out the bay.
-
Unless you own a VR6! Them extra 2 cyclinders make a huge difference sat in traffic to heat generated.
-
The mount I bought from GSF (recommended by darren from G-Werks 1 month ago) is the Golf MK2 TDI one, although I have the VR6. Mines fine and it's stronger than the standard one.

Jusy had a word with a very good trusted mechanic and he said that he can't see the silkolene oil being any different. Its just thicker at higher temps (I might have got that wrong way round)? He did say its worth a try come next oil change but its prob just the rings its getting past. 'Wait until it gets worse' was his advise, unless you have spare cash!

Just cleaned my engine bay (quite chuffed if I do say so myself!) and am pleased with the results. My only annoyance with it at the mo is the washer jet tank thingy. It's perfect on the outside but all moldy on the inside. How the hell can you clean inside a tank??? You can see it in the bottom pic.

I'm using silver synta (10w40???) vw stuff for the VR. Can I assume VW dont supply thicker stuff and silkolene's the way?
-
Mines just started doing this. Going down a long hill at 30 in 5th for about a mile. Go to the junction and when I set off I saw a cloud of blue smoke behind me. After that, it didn't do it, even when booting it stood still. Is this something I should get checked out or 'standard for a 13yr olf VR'?
