A mate of mine imports cars like the pulsar and Skyline... I can safely say that the Skyline R32 GTS is the only car I have ever driven that SCARED me... Not while I was driving it, but afterwards when we worked out how fast we'd just been... My mate took it out at around 345KMH and I brought it back at about 330KMH... I thought we were doing around 140MPH or so.... Guess I was wrong! Turns out that the guy who bought the car in Japan didn't like 4wd which is why he got the GTS not GTR and when he picked it up from the dealer, he took it to a tuning place and spent the same again on it to make it go and handle properly! It was around 850BHP at the rear wheels... That's one car not to try and race in a C... I still think it was butt ugly though!

May sound a silly idea, but try contacting Wolfrace (they are wolf alloys aren't they?) I bet that they do a touch up pen, or can give you a paint code for them as you aren't the only person in the world who's kerb'd their alloys and needs to touch 'em up (oo-err! ) Hope you can get 'em sorted... they're nice looking wheels... 8)

It's on the top of the oil fliter housing at the front of the G60 engine.... There's 2 senders there. The temp sender is the smaller one of the two... 8)
-
Nice tip... I'll do that next time! :D
-
The engine you are describing is not nice.... DO NOT BUY ONE! Their 2litre is based around a new van 2L engine and has a stupidly long stroke better suited to a diesel than a free revving G60 sports engine... It's been described to me as "like driving a giant vibrator" This is why they hold the exact spec as a secret... I'm sorry, but if I'm spending £1500+ on an engine, I want to know what the stroke, bore and base block for the engine are before I pay out any money... If they won't tell you, walk away! :? I've been looking into a 2 litre conversion for my 200K+ G60 for a while now and have pretty much looked at most of 'em that are available... IMHO the Stealth one is the one to go for, they overbore the original block and fit a custom forged crank, rods and pistons which takes it up to 2litres... The parts are all American (I forget the make, but it's a good one that I'd heard of before!) and they are very honest about what it is and what it's like... They just quoted me £3K for the short block with a stage 2 head, or £3.5K fitted based around my original block... :D Time to start saving heavily I think... Or maybe going more into debit!

It's worth doing... Just make sure that you don't tell ANYONE about any "I lost my keyfob" ways around the alarm, and put up some warning stickers on the doors/windows so that you have some legal cover if some low-life tries it on and then sues 'cos they're deaf! It's dead simple and, to be honest, the flashing light above the garage door and the "BLIP" it makes when I disarm it probably scares off most would-be theives...
-
Cheapo alarm (with keyfob) connected to mains power and battery backup... Alarm modded so that there's 4 sounders instead of one (basically one in each corner of the garage, aimed to bounce the sound off the walls and make the whole garage into a sound chamber  ) Door switches on both main and rear door, glass tape (from a house/shop alarm) to detect broken windows, and blue flashing LEDs mounted into the front and rear of the garage attached where the the standard car alarm LED should be... You can buy all the bits at places like Maplins electronics or RS components and make up a pretty good kit with no experience... :D It's kind of a mix of home and car alarms with a hint of "sodding big speakers" thrown in for good measure!
-
'tis a home made system (degree in electronic engineering and a career in broadcast and sound engineering comes in useful sometimes!) It's based around a cheapish car alarm, but I've modded the siren and added a few other touches that basically means that if you stay in the garage for more than about 30 seconds while the alarm is going, you won't hear anything else for a few days!  Stay for about a minute and you won't hear again, EVER! That should stop the tw@s... Probably worth having a word with the council though, they may well allow a "suitable" battery powered alarm to be fitted to the garage... The only reason I've got the overkill version fitted is that some low-life has already smashed up one of my wheels trying to steal them, and I don't want them to try it while they're in the hidden safetly (?!) of my garage!

Just watch out for those older ones with a solid black, all sliver lettered "GOLF GTI" badge on the back and a number plate with a single letter at the end (somewhere between V and Y) they're the ones to watch out for...  (you know where I'm coming from!) What is it with VW and their random badge letter colours recently??? I've now heard that they've stopped doing the red letter thing 'cos they were becoming too much of a theft target, so all of them will have the same colour letters on the back... I prefer the no GTI badge style... If you have to advertise what it is that much, it ain't worth it... Kinda why I like the C so much, understated little badges and great looks that make it look like it's gonna go, rather than tell you it should be able to... 8)

Wrap your C around a hedge after spending 2K on an engine rebuild a week before and then have ALL of the people you know not believe that you WEREN'T speeding and WERE doing 35mph in traffic, and you'll have had a worse day... I still don't know what happened to make me fall off the road like that, and I doubt I ever will... :( Seriously though, I do feel for you, it's a bummer when stuff like that happens, especially in one day... hope you can get the wheel/door sorted without too much cost/hassle... :? Time to alarm the garage? Mine now has a "hahaha! You're deaf 'cos you tried to break in" style alarm on it... It maybe a touch excessive, and I may get done if anyone does break in, but it's got a warning sticker on the garage doors/window and I sure as hell wouldn't want to be in there when it goes off! Whoever sets it off by breaking in, won't be doing it again, let's put it that way!

There does seem to be a large percentage of new GTI drivers that are utter tw@s... Shame (for them at least!) the new GTI ain't a patch on the earlier golf MKI/ II, Scirroco, or any of the Corrado range! I'd be laughing too, used to love doing similar things to Porsches in my MKI 16V when it was on the road... "Huh, it's just an old battered golf..." "No mate, it's a stripped out 1.8 16V 1600gearbox'd street rocket!" "Where'd he go?!?" :?

Erm, that's HENNY!!!  'tis a nickname from a looooonnnnngggg time ago that I still like...

Nah, 450 miles is nothing! I did nearly 1500 looking at cars that turned out to be sheds before I bought my current G60... Turn it into a weekend away, stay in a B&B and enjoy the scenery up by the border... You can tell it's pretty much a mint car, and it's exactly what you've been looking for... :D So James, Holiday and car in one package, what more do you want?!? 8) Good luck in finding a car no matter what you decide to do... :)

Just PM'd 16VG60, Cheers guys! I'll keep you updated! :D

Scott I do 28 miles in traffic on my way into Salford every morning and average around 25mpg over the course of a week... I recently went to Cornwall on holiday and followed my mate in his missus' 1.3 golf for 700 miles during the week and averaged 37.5mpg :D On one trip to the Eden project I got 38mpg with 4 people in the car (just under 60 stones total weight of people! We ain't small! ) and that ain't a nice flat road we're talking about! :? There ain't a lot between G and VR in fuel consumption in the real world... Ignore what the paperwork said when they were released, don't mean squat now that the engines have worn in (and out again in some cases! :? ) truth is that the fuel consumption is mainly affected by HOW you drive the car... Oh, and these are REAL averages worked out from paper reciepts and milages, not the stuff the MFA says... (which actually isn't that far out  :D )

Cheers ramsey I've already replaced thermostat (as well as fan and pipes and flanges etc!) I had the charger done about 9 months ago and Jabba did all of the tensioners/belts etc when that was done, but I'll sling a new cam-belt on while I'm doing it! Plugs and leads have also recently been done so other than the head, bolts and gaskets there's not much else I need to change (I've already done most of it! ) They'll also be genuine bits 'cos I have a mate who can get me them at a Very good price! Labour charges aren't an issue, I used to be a mechanic so I can do all of the work myself apart from the actual headwork, but I need the car due to work which is why I want to just buy an exchange one so I can do the whole hit in one day... :D I'd love John to do my head too, but he's not exactly local to Cheshire is he?!?
-
mambomonkey Thanks for that, The stealth price includes everything except for the head gasket set which I can source cheaply anyway... It'll come in at a smidgen under £700 all in Inc. VAT for everything... I'm not too bothered about this price though but I'm interested to hear peoples opinion... 8) Cheers!

Hiya guys! I need some quick advice on heads for G60s... My head gasket has just started leaking water from the back right corner... It's still drivable, but obviously needs the gasket replacing. I'm thinking that seeing as how the car has 200K miles+ on it the head could probably do with a rebuild... I need the car to be off the road for as short a time as possible, so it's gonna be worth my while putting a flowed head on it so I can pretty much do the head swap in an evening as I'll have both heads at the same time... :) I've spoken to a few companies about this, and Stealth racing look like they could be the favourites at the moment with their Stage2 head (£550+vat) Anyone got any views on this head, or other things I need to consider? (I've already replaced ALL of the water pipes and flanges, so they're all OK now, it's just the head gasket and head that need sorting...) Need to know quickly 'cos they're off for a week from tomorrow!
-
IMHO if you have a standard VR or a modded g60 the fuel cost issue is negligable... :? My G60 tends to only give about 25-30 mpg around town/in traffic and the most I've ever had was 35.5 when I was following my mate in his missus' 1.3 golf to Cornwall and back (700miles!) :) The worst I ever got was 16mpg over 80 miles  (I'm just glad I didn't get stopped! ) Saying that, I have got size 13 feet and lead shoes! Having tested both VR and G60 while I was looking, the G60 suited my driving style (if you can call it that!) better than the VR... That's probably changed now 'cos I was used to driving 16Vs before and revving the hell outta them... Think my next C will be a VR... If I can get anything for mine... :?
-
Yup, for some parts they are excellent.... I also tend to hammer Euro car parts as well... When some $#!£ reversed into my C and then drove off leaving me with 2 smashed headlights and grill (thankfully no body damage) Euro got me all the bits I needed next day for half what VW wanted, and they even came in VW boxes! If I could have waited I'd have got the bits from GPC and saved more, but I need my C daily and couldn't wait... :? In all, Euro and GSF are pretty similar on price and range... It's worth checking both out if they are close to you... In Manchester they're about half a mile apart! :)
-
I drove nearly 1500 miles trying to find my G60... and it still turned out to be clocked by 100,000 miles!  Anyone who knows me won't be shocked or even suprised by that... It's just typical of my luck... :? Seriously though, I looked at some right sheds before I bought mine and, milage apart, mine's straight, solid and hasn't been neglected so I'm still really happy with her... :D Oh, and she goes like stink which helps!

How long's the warranty? if it's 1 year with the option to pay more to extend it, bite their hands off, and don't forget to pay the extention! If it's less than 1 year, have a good long look at autotrader (or the for sale section here! ) and think long and hard about it... You've probably got a little while as a rebuild won't be done over night (and if it is RUN! ) As JoeNose says, time to haggle... Good luck... 8)

The Golf mag (as daft as it sounds...) http://www.corrado-forum.net

Hummm, it's looking like it could take a while for me to raise the cash due to my head gasket just expiring on the way home...  Sounds like there's interest so I'll keep ya posted! :D

I'm looking at doing the same to my C... I've got hold of the whole center bit out of a dead C and I'm going to try and make a mold with the conversion built in so that instead of hacking the original to bits to bodge something in, it looks like it's how it was designed... A mate of mine reckons that he can do the plastic injecting and make up the mold for me, but it may be kind of costly, and it'll be RHD only.... When I finally get around to doing it, I'll put some pics up (and I may even get a few more made and sell 'em on!)
