A mate of mine (who incidentally is not on the forum yet, but will be soon hopefully!) came round in his newly finished vrt, so as the sun was setting, we got a few nice piccies of his and my corrado.

Right, time to dig this one up again. After trying many things to cure my cold running misfire, i will outline what I tried, and what the actuial cause was, as there seem to be a lot of 2.0 16v with similar problems. Right, so firstly, the symptoms were: 1.When starting the engine from cold, the engine would start first time, but only run on 3 cylinders. This would continue until the oil temp read 80 deg on the MFA. 2. The car would not rev cleanly past 5,000 rpm, and seemed to hit a flat spot. So, onto what I replaced in an attempt to cure it: Spark plugs, Dizzy, cap + rotor arm Ecu, Ignition leads, coil, lambda sensor, water temp sender ( blue one on side of head) injectors, Fuel pump, fuel filter, I also stripped, cleaned and checked for any cracks etc the entire inlet system, i.e, manifold, all vacuum pipes, fuel lines. Checked all engine bay wiring for damage etc... Anyhoo, after all this, still no progress whatsoever. At this point, I took the head off to see if it was something mechanical as opposed to fuel or electriacl causing the gremlins. Really REALLY wish I'd tried this first........Once the head was off, I thought I may aswell strip it all down and give it a once over. When I came to put the valve spring compressor on one of the inlet valves on no.3 cylinder, lo and behold, the spring was broken! Luckily the two parts had stayed put, and not rattled around the head! SO promptly replaced duff spring, put nes tappets in, and hey presto, good as new.......No misfiring, and revs cleanly to the limiter now. Aren't corrado's fun!????!!

I think the mk2 golf ones would be best suited, although I'm sure the mk3 abf ones would fit too, just the mk2 is closer? I'm looking at getting some of these soon jim, so I'll let you know, unless you try them first of course! Who wants to be the guinea pig?
-
Saw this driving through pompey centre on saturday, looks ace on the new rims.
-
Rado looks sweet! Is that your mk2 in the road out front too? looks very nice! cool rims too!

My 1.8T Rado......End of the adventure.......Gutted!

wow, first yellow 'rado that i've seen and thought, mmmmmm! wheels suit it to a tee, good choice! -
The 5omm manifold will make the engine rev slightly better at the top end, i.e, get to the limiter quicker, but it will lose a bit of low-down torque. What would be great was if shrick did a variable manifold for the 16v! best of both worlds!

arse, just re-read all of this. In one sense, I'm glad my problem is shared by you guys, on the other, Its now going to be an expensive month.......
-
Yeah, i have been reading that article with interest too. the 2.0 16v 'rados seem to have a ccccrap selection of cogs as it is, and I think mine's due a re-build anyway!
-
surely if the internals of the bottom end are the same on all of them, a 225 bam is no stronger than say a 150 bhp agu?
-
bit like a giant remote control car bodyshell.
-
yeah, its basically a spaceframe chassis with a fibreglass body on top. I've seen these race, and they're pretty rapid, good p/w ratio.
-
is it only the later cars that have chips in then? mine has, it's a '95?
-
Should I buy this engine? 9a Bubble block 2.0 litre 185 bhp.
jimmy83 replied to RobMulvey's topic in General Car Chat
yeah, good point, I didn't think the 9a had a warm-up reg. Although, if he had it in a golf, it would prob be running on k-jet ( as in 1.8 16v engines) not Ke-jet (as in 2.0 corrado's passats etc...) -
Again, agreeing with everyone else here trig. I don't think there's ever been a car that generates as much love/hate from its owners as a corrado! I bet everyone on this forum has felt like this at some point! Only seen the car once, and It's gorgeous, don't do it.........
-
Not another one!! Sadly mate, this seem to be a veeeerry common problem with the 9a engines..Use the search, and you'll find loads of previous topics on this...hope we can help! My woman seems to think not buying a corrado would be the answer....very helpful!

Advice on lumpy, erratic 2.0 16v - being a bit crap again..

glad to hear yours is sorted Jim, I'll bet you'll never take a smooth idle for granted ever again!! I certainly miss mine! -

interestingly, I have just replaced my throttle with one from Sanburns, as it was jamming open at full throttle! Now, although it didn't cure my cold running misfire, the car does seem to idle very nicely now, and (once warmed up!) the power delivery seems smoother. If you are going to take yours off Jim, be very careful with the 4 allen key bolts, they are fairly shallow and I managed to round one off, which meant taking manifold off etc to drill it out..... -

jim, tottally sympathise with you on this one, my 2.0 16v has had a cold misfire since april, myself and vince have tried everything bar taking the head off. Its so frustrating, as the car is fine when warmed up. Strangely, I have a loose heatshield, and squeaky alternator now.....aarrrgghh! -
cool, hope it runs better!
-
well, unless it has new components in it, there's no real reason why you should have to 'run it in' You can check the timing yourself fairly easily just to be sure. Try a search for it on here. A used kr engine shoul rev nice and freely, so there's something amiss. Where did you get the engine put in? Midland vw is only round the corner from you, you could always get them to check cam and ign timing for you?
-
Is the engine new/recon? what parts have been repaced? pistons, rings etc?
-
sound like the timing's out? What engine is it?
-
All vw 16v engines sound a bit whiney In my experience. Usually the belts?

Quickest car you've been in, owned and most interesting....
jimmy83 replied to NickVR6's topic in General Car Chat
Fastest I've been was in my dads old lotus carlton, awesome car, but got stolen and recovered no less than three times. Fastest I've driven is in his westfield race car at thruxton. brilliant fun, so effortless! Fastest owned: I'd say my old 2.0 8v golf was marginally quicker than my rado, so prob. that!
