Captain Bodge Car Lowering Techniques
Sonicriot13 replied to Sonicriot13's topic in General Car Chat
I'm sure the garage he takes it to will find even more stuff wrong with it. I feel really bad for him but when he came to collect it off me I told him to take it easy cos of the brakes and suspension and he just caned it down my road. And just by chance we were following him yesterday through town and he was tail gating and just generally ragging it. We were a few cars behind and we could still smell his exhaust. So he's driving it around despite my advice to not drive it until it had been sorted. He's just gonna make it worse. -

Well, as much as I hate to leave a mate in the lurch I've washed my hands of this one. I've got to get this valver at least in a condition where I can move it under its own power. Plus I'm getting grief off a certain person for the amount of time I'm spending doing car related activities. Which I can understand really. He's gonna take it to a garage.... Cue one very large bill! To summarise: My mate comes to me saying he wants a new car and decides he wants to go for a golf GTI. "Great! let me know when you see one you like and I'll go out and have a look to see if it's a shonky old tub or not." My mate finds one he likes and proceeds to buy it there and then all by himself without getting any second opinions, even though he's using a bank loan to pay for it. He pays three thousand pounds for what on the surface seems to be a reasonable car. When I get my hands on it I discover all four shocks and springs will need replacing (see illustrations), locking wheel nuts missing (five stud wheels with only four bolts in), spare wheel kit missing, ancient oil, ancient air filter, ancient oil filter, running like a pig, exhaust not functioning properly (although think engine running really rich), it's doing 16mpg (that's on the trip computer so god knows what it's actually doing), Tyres are running at about 4psi, gear box shot (the notchiest, crunchiest lump of metal ever), brakes shot, oh, and there's a small dent on passenger side wing.... -
This is just a classic! Expect a certain Mk4 golf to appear for sale on here soon. Excellent condition, FSH, purrs like a kitten, no missing wheel nuts, no flat tyres, brakes in perfect working order, the exhaust system is so good it's actually helping to reduce global warming, and it's being sold by a guy called sonicriot14 who registered on my computer but I have no idea who he is.   £15,000 to the right buyer, no offers!

Linky workys fine :thumbleft:. Get with the broadband times man! :D
-
Only if you have a Golf, ah crap :( I've been a freak many times over then. And probably will be again when I find the right mk2 valver for the right price....
-
That is awesome :thumbleft: And that interior was defo worth the wait.

Oh, and I like the way Volkswagen regard us as freaks!

That is one lucky bloke! Imagine being handed the keys to that thing!

I don't know about the VW scene. I think people like this just give the entire human race a bad name. :( -

Sonicriot13 replied to Andy665's topic in General Car Chat
That's not on. I hope you get your money back soon and with minimal hassle. What a jerk. Also, is this other buyer really there? It just seems a bit odd because the price he wants now is very near what they were originally up for. -

   Check out this low rider.... Shot with W800i at 2007-08-08 Compare the ride height at the back to that at the front. Took it out for a little spin as well (yes I have insurance) and it frightened the life out of me. It's a million times worse than even I thought. The brakes are terrible. If you can imagine taking all of the fluid out of the brake lines and replacing it with cigarette smoke, that is what it feels like has happened when you press the pedal. Dear God they need bleeding fast! The starter motor sounds like someone grinding ball bearings to dust in their teeth! There's no way even Yee Ha McBodge MOT Services would pass this car on an emissions test. It's just spewing out some killer fog. No smoke but really nasty fumes. Basically if I picked up a mk2 GTI 16v in this sort of condition for a reasonable sum as a project I'd be happy, but as a mk4 it's a disgrace. It is in the same sort of nick you'd expect a not very well looked after mk2 to be in. Heartbreaking. He wants me to do the back ones now.... Should I say I'm busy/leaving the country? And I don't know why imageshack see fit to put the name of my phone on the bottom of the picture but free image hosting isn't working any more. -

Yeah Torsten, I've always had a soft spot for your Corrado. One of the best I've seen. Love it! :thumbleft: -
Yes, trust me, the 2.0 has a lot of things that need fixing. Well mine does anyway.... As VR6 says you get the later styling and interior (think mk3 golf) with the 2.0 which I think is a bonus because I prefer the way the later cars look. Go out and meet a few and make your own mind up on that though.

That's a good point mate. I have no idea about the MOT actually. Been too worried about getting it sorted. I wonder if my mate was even given a cert.... Let's face it, he wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't there. I've got the shock on now at least. Just finished it. Thank goodness for that. I removed just about everything including the wish bone to give myself as much room as possible. Probably overkill but it's on. :D My torque wrench has seen a lot of use these last few weeks! I phoned my mate up to tell him the good news, as he has given up on coming round to "help" me, and he didn't seem to care all that much. For goodness sake, there are people with worse problems! Also for your amusement gentlemen. Two samples of oil. Your job is to decide which is a sample of the oil that came out of the car, and which is a sample of the oil I put back in the car?   -

Yeah, tried compressing the springs but then the compressors just get in the way when you try to fit it. I'm gonna have a look at it tonight. Maybe it was just fatigue over the weekend and I was missing something. My mentality with it now though is the old one came off so the new one can go back on again. I've done shocks before for goodness sake. How can a mk4 be such a shonky old tub? -
Oi! Watch it! No offense intended :) Was really thinking could be an american Corrado, most likely a Vr with those extras but one way or the other it sounds like a very nice example with a very low mileage It's cool, I'm not a real American anyway. Only half. :thumbleft: Wish I could say my G60 only had 28 grand on the clock!

Well, if you want mate I'll come to viewings with you. Over these last few days I've gathered enough information to put together Sonicriot13's patented Mk4 Golf 32,563,253 point inspection. -

Well, I've explained the situation to my parent's and they're ok with it thank goodness. Think they're used to me by now anyway! I don't have a clue why it won't go on. There isn't enough room to seat the mounting rubber at the top of the shock and locate the bottom of the strut in the hub. I've tried everything I can think of doing apart from removing the hub completely and fitting the bottom of the strut in the split housing while it's off the car. Then connecting it all back up. I just need to get this shock on so I can get it off my parent's drive and to a professional. The weird thing is the other side just went straight in. I can't believe someone would sell a car like this, but most of all I can't believe someone would buy it! -

It was a private sale and he got it about a week ago. He didn't even get a hand written receipt or anything. He made no attempt to check the car's history and as far as I'm aware the only paper work he got was a service schedule last stamped in 2005 and the new keeper's supplement! He basically got over excited with the thought of buying a new car and lost his head. Couldn't be bothered to wait for me or anyone else to check it out before he bought it. He is all like "woe is me, the world hates me" when it's his fault. He's doubting my abilities because I can't get this shock on when all I wanted to do was help him out. I had to send him away yesterday because he was just standing there swearing at the top of his voice and smoking 2 cigarettes a minute which really wasn't helping. And I have this car stuck on my parent's drive an they're back from holiday on Friday. He hasn't got the initiative to open the yellow pages and phone a mechanic himself so I'm stuck with it basically. Thinking of taking the hub off completely and fitting it to the shock and attaching the whole lot back to the car. If I decide that's too tw*tty I'll just call someone out and my mate can pay for it. Oh, and he's too scared to go back to the guy he bought it from. And I ain't doing it. Why should I? I'm in the process of selling my grandma's house and finding somewhere to live. -

My mate is absolutely stewing about it. He's basically just bought an absolute dud. It idles real rough like it's on three cylinders. The oil that came out was more like mud. The driver's front brake disc rattles around when the wheel is taken off because the retaining screw has sheared off somehow leaving the length of the screw stuck in the hub. That ain't coming out any time soon if ever. Why he bought it I just don't know. I guess he just didn't know what he was looking at, but what he is looking at now is a restoration project I reckon.
