    Rattly VR6

Smartphone video suffers from auto gain control, so it pumps up the volume to deafening even if the noise itself is pretty quiet. Tough to diagnose from that. It's worth saying that a lot of VR6s are quite clattery, and there's nothing necessarily badly wrong with them, they've pretty much always been like that to some extent. The timing chains would be a classic one to check and you'd know that was an issue if the sound is worst when it's around 1200rpm at fast idle.
  2. The wet is when you can really tell the difference between tyres. The differences in the dry are much less pronounced.
  3. Absolutely. In fact my mate was looking at them for this exact reason. As a dedicated tree hugging non-petrolhead it makes perfect sense for him.. :) Me, I'm waiting for the Tesla Model 3. Maybe.
  4. At least it costs more like £18k after rebates. Still expensive. On the upside if you suffer range anxiety they will loan you a petrol/diesel car of your choice for up to two weeks per year for free to take on any longer trips you have planned. It is transport as utility, and that's enough for some people. I think they warrant the battery for 8 years/100k miles by the way. And they reckon that the earliest cars out there are still seeing almost no capacity loss, so it's not that bad. In the not too distant future zero-emissions will be a requirement to enter certain cities...
  5. I had the passenger experience too, but sadly my co driver was more of the "miss daisy" inclination than I so I had to wait till I got behind the wheel to properly experiment. The potential is huge though. And the fact that any old idiot can get in the driver's seat, plant the throttle and it'll see you alright and give you a bit of a thrill along the way is deeply impressive. Totally exploitable for all. And 7 seats, air con, a huge boot, the best safety record of any car on the planet thus far and 300+ mile range too. I think we'll all have electric cars eventually, tbh. It's a much more sensible way of propelling a passenger vehicle. Meanwhile I fell back in love with the Corrado on the way home from work. Frankly when it's wet the tyres are so rubbish that you can make the thing dance across the road sideways and balance it with the throttle, brakes, and wild steering inputs. Mucho entertainment, even if it's not so fast in a straight line.. and can barely put down the power it has - was spinning the wheels at 70mph in 3rd gear on the wet, that was a little scary. So everything's ok again. As you were! :)
  6. The Corrado is now officially dull. Boring. Meaningless. Yawn... Jeezus the Tesla is fast.. Did a couple of low-ish speed pulls in insane mode and it just pummels you into the seat. But the most impressive thing is that you can plant the throttle in a ~690lbft car round a roundabout and it'll work out how to get the power down as best it can. A little bit of a scrabble from the tyres, a little bit of understeer at first, but then it just bites when you get to the straight and it catapults you forward like nothing else (*). I would say that yes the steering isn't as insightful as the Corrado (pretty much nothing is), but other than that it's a poor relative and for the first few thousand miles at least you would be grinning so much from the torque that you wouldn't notice.. Anyone else had a play? ( * - ok like a handful of other cars, all costing seriously in excess of 100k.. )

    Missfire

Yep, classic. When mine was going I found it got worse in damp weather ..
  8. There's two rear mounts - could be either. How did the car wind up with two duff engine mounts!?
  9. I have noticed that if you have the oil temp displayed then it is more reluctant to change than if you click off to other data sources too. When waiting for "--" to become "50" for example too many times for it to be a coincidence it's jumped to 50 on a cycle through the screens. So, my best guess is that while it's being displayed the dash is smoothing the data, to stop it jumping around. Which it would! Look at a mk7 golf oil temp reading - it goes up and down by 10-15 degrees depending on where the hottest of the oil is in the system at any given time. (And ours is a modest 1.4t so doesn't really generate anything like the heat of a VR6.) Plus obviously as soon as you stop the engine the oil circulation stops so the sensor sits in a static pool that drains away very slowly.
  10. "Jumps back" meaning up or down?
  11. Shut the car off, turn all the electrics off then wait half an hour. Then measure the battery voltage idle. Fully charged is 12.6v. "Won't start the car" is about 11.6v. 13.8v is OK with electrical loads on, but not OK otherwise.
  12. Yes, back then, i believe it was the fastest production VAG ever made until the TT with the 225 bhp and quatro. But now, no way. And no, I don't think it's pretty. "Handsome", yes, and quite purposeful looking, but not pretty. I like it myself for its classic low, aggressive stance with the flared wheel arches, but it's not "pretty" in the true sense of the word.
  13. They made a huge loss on the Corrado and do seem to be a bit embarrassed by it all at a corporate level. I guess it suffers from being seen as neither original (it's a Scirocco v2) or particularly special by modern standards (it's not the prettiest or fastest car they ever produced by any means) and it doesn't have the hippy chic of a beetle or camper van so it's just a bit "meh" to them. Like idolising the "golf mk3" it's just not going to happen. The techs, of course, loved it...
  14. Good price. The broker provides some added comfort, but as always read the small print...
  15. Correct, regulators everywhere. Car circuits are very well aware they have to tolerate the world's muckiest spikiest and noisiest power supply. It's not this, otherwise you'd see the gauge drop when you start the car too.
  16. And you do know that oil flows from cool parts to hot parts and vice versa. Turn your back for ten seconds and you get a slug of cooler oil on the sensor. I just don't see this as a real problem. The sensors themselves use standard temp sensor modules that will be accurate to within a degree or so, and more to the point they will be consistently inaccurate rather than randomly wrong (unless they are faulty). Secondly, look at a newer car and the oil temp values fluctuate much more rapidly than those reported by the VR6 - the reality is it's heavily smoothing this data before you see it.
  17. Actually it's more likely the dash is presenting a rolling average over a short period of time to prevent it swinging about too rapidly. When you turn the ignition off and back on it has no historical data any more so it shows the live value. I've seen 115 degrees or so on the oil in summer on motorway runs too. Ease off the speed and it should come down a little.
  18. Yeah DAB is likely to be more complicated because I believe it needs a different antenna. Will take a look around. As far as I can see behind the old radio the ISO connectors are still in place. Thanks.
  19. This was with the engine running presumably. Electrics on? It's OK but would like to see it pushing 14.2 without any electrical load.
  20. Lol Welcome to Corrado ownership. Only for the dedicated and being rich helps.. You will regularly receive comments like "I would just replace both anyway" around here... :)
  21. VAGCOM is great, but I found that OBDeleven also works and uses a Bluetooth dongle and your smartphone instead of a laptop and cable. It's also less than £40 all in.
  22. As per the title... What do you guys have for an easy-to-fit basic headunit with bluetooth connection and (ideally) DAB .. ? I have no ambitions for anything other than drowning out the rattles, but want something that's reliable. Cheers!
