  1. No, they have the wrong type of hose fitment inside the engine bay too. It's just the wrong part full stop.
  2. Wish I'd found this thread back when mine went. They sold me the same (wrong) part, but because I didn't get around to even attempting to fit it for so long they now refuse to take it back.

    Mot

Mine's not failed in 8 years. And now I have nine months to go until it proves me wrong ..
  4. Hey Jim, For once i agree with mr bacon. frankly I think an old VR6 is an old VR6. Mine clatters like a barsteward if you stand there with the bonnet open revving it but runs super sweet if you're tickling the redline at the end of a long high rpm run... Personally I think the slight increase in clatter due to old age is nothing to do with valves or chains, I suspect oil pump drive gear ..
  5. I would suggest the ultra-mobile home alternative: "hotels" .. Much safer, and warmer too. :) A VR6 mk1 cab would likely scare the willies out of you with or without a caravan on the back..
  6. Don't know what type of van you have but from what I can see the absolute lightest in the UK is still nearly one metric ton. That's actually heavier than a typical mk1 golf... :) Not sure if the cabrio is heavier or lighter than the standard car. They are often a little heavier..
  7. Step 1: get a heavier car. No matter how much torque you have in the engine you can't tow much more weight unless you weigh the mk1 down a whole lot to stop it tipping over or just spinning its wheels.
  8. This has always been a ****ty job on an old VW.. Just keep plugging at it you'll crack it in the end..
  9. I recall reading a few people saying these fit later cars pretty poorly. At least you can get them though, unlike from VW..
  10. It could, potentially, cause issues with the cat, but there's nothing you can do about it now. Just drive it and wait for the MOT to find out ...
  11. I think it was only introduced recently to require diesels to have dpf and catalyst fitted. Prior to that it was a pure emissions test, now the actual specification is checked to make sure these environmental devices are still present. None of this matters for 20 year old VR6s..
  12. Sounds more like an air lock to me. The electric water pump doesn't run after ignition-off full time, only if the engine is up to temperature (as recorded in the top hose).
  13. Looks like it was running *very* rich. Most likely a failed lambda sensor.
  14. Just drive backwards all the time.... ;)
  15. I believe that you will need to be running at least 16" wheels to get them over a 312mm disk... Maybe even 17". Have heard the 288mm disks off the late Golf VR6/GTi will fit under standard 15" wheels.
  16. They do lose two cylinders. There are three coils in the CP. That implies your coil pack has a failed link between that coil and the output. Or, and I've never ever heard of this before, there is an issue with the output from your ECU. But equally there are only three output lines from the ECU so if one cylinder works the other will get fired too.
  17. For those that do have a failed fan I found ECP selling a generic replacement (without resistor pack) for only thirty quid at the moment so I'll probably order one anyway. But I also found that I fiddled around a bit and my fan does in fact work so I've refitted it for now. Hopefully this is me sorted for the time being, I wait for the next rainstorm with baited breath....
  18. In my case, it's definitely the scuttle area leaf guard that's leaking. Meanwhile I found the clips holding the fan motor into the plastic casing so that's out now and I can't really see anything wrong with it, so I have to assume there's a broken winding or something. Will check it again later. Otherwise yeah replacement motor time.
  19. Ok, silicone sealant in place. The metal pin is missing so there's nothing to hold the grille down but hopefully the sealant will do the job. Actually I didn't use silicone sealant I used gutter sealant, I suspected that's probably a better bet. I'm not up to welding a new fixing pin on myself, so this will have to do. So now - the fan. I've verified that the fan itself is not working (getting 12v supply to it). I am guessing there's a fuse in there but can't see how to strip it down without prying off the spring washers top or bottom of the spindle. Anyone have a spare (with or without resistor pack) for a '95 VR6? Alternatively a hint on how to strip it down.
  20. Actually id like a set too .. did I miss the boat .. ??
  21. Tis the game. Play the game... There's really no rules, so make it up as you go along. :)
  22. Agree. And I've rarely got more than 8000 miles out of a pair of tyres on the front of the car no matter what brand ...
  23. I like these tyres. One of the best asymmetric tread options in a standard VR size.

    Water pipe

I believe they have an embedded bypass valve so yes it could matter that it's the wrong way round.
  25. Well yes, but at least you can get the parts.. Not looking forward to the mk7 golf ageing. The amount of weirdo electronics that are likely to be a) problematic and b) bloody expensive is pretty scary. The issue we are seeing more and more with maintaining an older car is definitely as you say quality of part supply.
