  1. What's AMD's labour rates? And how much are genuine VW ball joints? The GSF ones are 3rd party, and at only £11.25 you've gotta wonder if they're up to the job of controlling 1.2 tonnes of car in a corner!?

    Rattling Window.

They all rattle. Not much can be done about it without dismantling the mechanism and replacing the guides or welding things up and stuff. Either get used to it or start saving..
  3. He could well be right... You need to work out which bit is moving relative to which other bit to decide...

    Fuel Consumption

Could also be the cold weather. They have to pump a huge amount of fuel in to run cold starts on the VR6... Try resetting the computer during your journey - that cuts out the cold start, and gives you a more instantaneous reading of the current consumption.
  5. Now I think of it, I have a slight clunk noise when pulling out of my parking space at work... Usually that involves reversing out, then going forwards.. Could be the ball joint shifting under the change in loading. That's been happening for a while, I put it down to general crapness of erm.. well.. Actually I tried not to think about it on the whole!! M.
  6. Don't you need to get the cast/camber adjusted after changing the ball joints or something? I remember reading something like that, I'm sure...
  7. Ahem! Mines the same on lorry ruts. Yes, I wondered about the ball joints too.. This might explain drifting tracking too... Smeg. More money. Not so much on bits, just on labour really.. Will have to get that checked out. Along with the rear wheel bearings and so on... Matt.
  8. It doesn't feel so bad in a corner, it's just vague about the straight-ahead, in fact. It moves about like it's windy when I'm going in a straight line on the motorway, even when I know it's not. Not by much, but just slightly... It's driving me nuts this car!! :(
  9. I have brand new tyres on the front, pair of goodyear eagle F1s, on known straight, true 15" speedlines. The rear axle bushes were replaced last year...
  10. The error code you had indicated that you needed to check the electrical circuit to the abs valve mechanism, so it's really just a case of taking the big connecting plug off, trying to find any dodgy contacts and putting it back. There may be other things you can do, but I'm not aware of them.. Testing the sensors will likely not help, as the ECU seems to think they are all fine.
  11. I've got new rear wheel bearings - I've noticed that before... I will check them again, but they were fine a couple of weeks ago. AMD seem to advertise 4-wheel alignment, but not suspension geometry (i.e. cast/camber)..

    ABS light arghhhhh!!

How much did VAG charge, btw? Did they tell you what other error codes were on while they were at it?
  13. Hi, I'm convinced my VR6 isn't pulling as hard as it should, and I'm getting some misfire in these cold mornings, so I was wondering if anyone in the berkshire area had a VAGCOM setup we can take a look at it with? I have a suspicion my MAF is gebuggered, but think the car should work 99% with just the Throttle Position Sensor, so wonder if something else is causing problems? Also I'm finding that the handling is a little "light" at high speeds, the steering doesn't seem to have the heavy centre-weighting and confidence I expect from the car. It's consistent, however, so I don't think anything's loose, so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about the best places to do a funky 4-wheel geometry thing in the berkshire area (or reasonably near). Ta muchly, Matt.
  14. Before you panic about the head gasket, assume it's a hose starting to go, or the radiator, or the heater matrix, or something like that. Water levels dropping slightly is usually the first sign of stuff like that.. Head gasket should be the last thing you assume..!! Unless you're into large repair bills, that is! ;)
  15. You'll have to pop the mirrors out and check if there's 12V on the power lines to them, there's a plug directly at the back of the mirror. It should be on when the rear demister is on, as stated above, so if there's 12v there and your mirrors don't demist then the elements are fooked and you'll need to replace (most likely). Last time I checked VW wanted around £46 each for new ones!!!!! Non-heated mirrors for Golfs are only £16 tho, so £46 is obscene.
  16. Big advantage of the CTR is that it's a honda. In 8 years time you won't be replacing door handles, mirror glasses, starter motors, headlight switches.. yada yada.. Even with it's 8.5k rev limit the engines will probably outlast most of the VR6s on the road.. :(
  17. Ask VAG-COM! If nothing on there I'd blame the ISV, dontcha think?
  18. I have the opposite problem, dazzyvr6. It must be one of those Corrado "known problems".. Jeez, my 12 year old Vauxhall had heated wing mirrors that worked perfectly, even after some idiot had shunted the wing mirror off with some idiotic parking manoeuvre and it was hanging off the side of the car by it's cables..
  19. There was a CTR on the same track day as me, me in my VR6.. He wasn't leaving me for dead, but yeah, along the straights his spare 35 bhp was quite visible... :? It's possible there were a few horses left under my bonnet, but given the mileage of the engine I'm not gunning it to the redline every time any more, thanks.. BUT re the CTR - When I caught him off-power-band however, I'd sail past him, cos lets face it he's only got a 2.0 .. :)
  20. Surely you should take it back to the "pro" that adjusted your cables.. You have 2 options. 1) cable adjustment is still miles out 2) gearbox is fooked Can't imagine 1st, 2nd AND reverse dying at the same time in a gearbox, so I'd go for number 1 myself. Perhaps your "pro" ain't quite so "pro"?
  21. It's difficult to rate how "crashy" suspension is. My C is much more harsh on small road imperfections than my previous car, but on the whole I don't have reason to believe there's anything seriously wrong with it (for once!!). My missus' pug 206 rides beautifully compared to my C over imperfect surfaces. That's what you get for driving a car with suspension based on the mk 2 golf which came out in 198x.. I'd hold off till your top mounts are done and see what you think then.
  22. Brand new one is about £700, or so I'm told!! My personal feeling is get a pro to fit it. It's a safety system, after all... All depends how handy you are with a spanner, really.
  23. And lo and behold, an ABS pump appears: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... egory=9889 Could be worth a shufty, jedi-knight83.
  24. Keep your post still and we might actually read it!! ;)
