    smokin VR6

Of course, without all the electronic gizmos it would do about 20 mpg (all the time) and would never pass emissions regs in a million years, but...

    ... Weber carbs .... ??

    steamy windows

Not a good idea... I've heard many people say bad things about radweld.. Ranging from "it shouldn't be used at all, ever, no, absolutely not!" to "maybe in an absolute emegergency to just get you home".. But you wouldn't put gunk in your oil, so why put gunk in the water? Either way you're bunging up all the waterways in the engine too...
  4. If your matrix was "gone" you'd have steamy windows... (Once the engine warmed up, anyway..)
  5. Your local garages are clearly funded by some sort of "VW maintenance grant" then, PhatVR6?? ;)
  6. Have you done an ECU reset recently? Often helps on stuff like this? Maybe it needs to re-adapt to the characteristics of your engine.
  7. It can't do much. All it does is pump the brakes, it won't rein the engine back, so it may well be working (you'd hear the pulsing), but it can't control a VR at 4krpm in first..!
  8. Trouble with 2nd hand ones is they're either already gone or on the way.. Tho I suppose if it's only £25 and you're doing it yerself it's no big deal.
  9. Afaik the rear calipers are pretty much interchangeable on all the Cs and Golfs. Bizzarrely VW proved to be the cheapest place to get replacements for me. They can sell refurbed calipers for about £65 each, but you have to specifically ask for refurbed, cos otherwise they sell you a new one at about £110!!
  10. Ok, sorry... I misread.. :( Must get my glasses checked!! :)
  11. Henny, not wishing to p1ss on your bonfire, but I would personally recommend doing the tracking first. This is a cheap, easy adjustment, unlike replacing the wishbones or their bushes...! Do the cheap stuff first!! :)
  12. It sounds exactly like the tracking is fubar. You might notice uneven tyre wear on the fronts - if so, it's definitely the tracking. It could also be engine mounts - if the engine is bouncing around that'll definitely hamper your steering accuracy. I'm suffering similar problems at the moment, and it's actually BOTH these things that are causing them. HTH. Matt.
  13. As I understood this, there are no points associated with the offence *at the moment*. Initially it's just a £30 fine for car drivers and much higher for coach/HGV drivers. They are planning to bring in 3 points for it, however.
  14. VWs in general have a pretty poor crash safety record... Assuming you hit something heavy enough. The Corrado head restraints are pathetic. They are almost no help at all. Basically you'd better hope you hit someone else, rather than the other way around.. :?

    VAG-COM

Talking of VR6 and VAG-COM. ;) Does anyone with a VAG-COM setup in berkshire wanna do me a huge favour and plug it into my lovely VR6? I have no real reason to assume there's anything wrong, but I'd like to see what might be going wrong in the future... :-\

    VR cutting out...

If it amazingly happened in front of the mechanic he still wouldn't know what had happened... This particular fault has kept many VR owners awake at nights for the last few years, no-one has really figured out any single cause, but a few people can give you a list of expensive parts that *didn't* cause it for them... :(

    Speed Sensor

They maybe meant the crank speed sensor, not the ABS wheel sensors. As reported above, battery is a £43 job. Go to GSF and get a 64Ah Bosch Silver. Fit it yerself! (Even I managed that!!)
  18. AFAIK you can plug into the computer without the engine running, and read off the past history. But I've not used it, I've just read about it on the forum... Can't say for sure what you can and can't do with e.g. a screwed alternator..
  19. It keeps a history since the ECU was last reset (i.e. the power was removed). Don't know if it records the dates of faults, but it will list previous faults, certainly.
  20. The plans are to post as many times as possible to see if anyone is interested!! ;)

    VR Sump Gaskets...

And actually, following my other thread of engine mount problems, it seems this original "oil" problem was a combination of both the oil-filled gearbox mount failing AND the oil cooler seals. The engine mount will be replaced on Monday... (Along with the exhaust..)
  22. ... and what about the pricing for genuine parts? Didn't someone mention the driveshaft was over £200 notes from VW??
  23. No idea about the CV joint price. Could be expensive, it's a fairly complex piece of hardware... And let's face it, everything's expensive - it's a VW!! :(
  24. .25 inch engine movement isn't too bad. Noises when on full lock might be the CV joint - does it get worse/better under engine load or while coasting?
  25. Does anyone report mileages back to the HPI people from MOT certificates? I'm not sure if they do or not. People report mileages on the V5 when they buy/sell sometimes though, which definitely goes to the DVLA. Do you have more details?
