1. The thing is that overall cost is just an estimation, it generalises on things like first solo within 15 hours and passing your PPL skills test after 45. In reality this is not uncommon but not everyone meets it, I think my first solo was 19 hours and i passed around 50 hours in. This will add more to your dual time and therefore an extra ~50 notes an hour. The CAA charges will normally be additional the quote, and as is the way with government bodies, you're looking at around £200 iirc just to sign your licence and post it back. The ground exams can be done at the flying school so that should be part of the quote you'd be given. I don't want to discourage you in the slightest as every time i get in the flying seat its just an incredible feeling, but it's not cheap mate! Also remember it's not over once you have the licence, you need to keep current from both an insurance and a type rating point of view. Insurance is always the most restrictive, and the two places I fly from have 6 week and 8 week limits. This means if you haven't flown for that period of time, you aren't insured and are required a 'refresher' with an instructor to clear you to fly solo again. To take passengers you must complete 3 take offs and landings within the last 90 days (licence restriction), and then there's the type rating currency which is 12 months but I can't remember how much flying you need to have done within that period. It's better to know what you're getting into mate! ---------- Post added at 11:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:41 AM ---------- Tomahawk...Hmm there's mixed opinions on that, it's the two seater I believe, tiny little thing! PA-38 if you want to look it up. is that £147 dual? That's not bad at all if it is, I'd check to see what the solo hire rate is too! Make sure you check what inflight gear they're chucking at you, I made the mistake of letting my flight school get me all the gear. Was a bit pricey what they bought (nothing basic all the mid premium stuff which is expensive!) but as I didn't see this until the bill at the month's end it was a bit too late. If you find out let me know what they've itemised and I'll let you know if you can get it cheaper! I'd get a run down printed off before you commit.
2. I'm a ppl holder going cpl this year! 100 an hour is very optimistic. Out of norwich the aircraft hire is around 120 but then instructors are another 50 odd on top. The best place you can go to get a private licence is a flying club. I fly from one near me (one of the best in the UK imho) where the organisation is entirely volunteer run. That means no instructor costs, good rates and to top it off they've kept a third of a usaf ww2 base runway so it's easy to spot and operate from. The end result is around 110 an hour for a fantastic little pa28 archer ii. Regarded as one of the better basic trainers it will cruise around 115 knots (140 ish mph) and even has autopilot! 3. Not sure Sam, I'm only going on what I've been told by vince. I don't know if there's any way VAGCOM can tell you if it's non adaptive. The trouble is this would only happen when it attempts to fire up the SAI pump so it probably will say its adaptive at idle anyway? I guess the best way is to monitor it with use, maybe that bluetooth obd plug and the phone app would give you that info on the fly? Sorry I really don't know enough to say, this is all a (huge) learning curve for me.
4. Ok I'll mail you it when I get home mate. Looks good, mine's just a big hole at the moment but I'm going to clean the bay up a bit before swapping and probably get the old loom out first. I think I've got the hang of the wiring procedure now, just a case of keeping the old plugs and loom for any modules that aren't being replaced by MK5 kit. Are you using the MK5 ECU to manage the aux water pump or keeping it with the fan controller?
5. Yeah I was provided similar options. The two experienced folks I asked (to get an unbiased second opinion) both said the easiest way is to swap the head for a mk4 one. As I have reason to believe my engine is a minter (sub 10k miles) I really don't want to fiddle with the engine. So I'm going with option #2 of buying the right Mk5 electricals. Should get some of it back by selling a full Mk4 wiring loom for an R32 conversion and so will you. You won't be pleased to learn that I have spent 2 weeks so far searching for an ECU, and it wont be any easier for me now there's another person after one! The fusebox loom I am unsure of, I am really hoping so as I could only locate the engine side loom from a mk5. I have asked Kev (Fishwick) to come help with a bit of the wiring so we will add all the findings to the other thread (Mk4/5 differences). I would appreciate any findings you have in there too, it really was news to me when I learned I had the wrong electrics, hopefully the thread will help others in the future. I have the pinouts for the MK5 ECU (courtesy of Vince) which I can share, I am still a bit daunted by all this wiring though. As we are both tackling the same job at the same time, i think it would be prudent to share all findings! I'm yet to fit the new engine but the old one was removed last night so it'll be a matter of days. Cheers, James
6. Ian, I have just started a definitive thread for this very topic, I'm afraid the news isnt good. I also have a BUB engine which I bought as a job lot with Mk4 electricals. The ECU will run the engine but will throw a cam sensor fault due to differences in the old and new sensors. Please read the thread to get more info, I too had the plugs not fitting, does it almost look like the cam sensor plugs will fit but don't? That's the exact problem I had, I've managed to source a Mk5 engine loom since which fits fine, now its just the ecu I'm after. Cheers ---------- Post added at 8:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 8:15 AM ---------- Kev, Any chance you have a core plug spare? Will pay for it just decided its a good idea to blank it off! ---------- Post added at 8:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 8:16 AM ---------- Also Ian, this is information I gathered from Vince @ Stealth; Re the SAI relay, the ECU looks for indications the relay has fired when a signal is sent to turn on the SAI pump. If this indication is not present, the ECU won't be as adaptive as before, meaning possibly higher fuel consumption. It's not as serious as 'limp home mode' but if you want a fully adaptive ECU (as it should be) you have to create a dummy load using a relay for this and 1 or two other systems I believe.

R32 progress

Well it's been slow so far, as I have had a few things hold me up. The loom won't work (Mk4 stuff) so I've had to start sourcing Mk5 electrics which as you can imagine isn't easy to find. Engine is ready to come out and the new engine is ready to go in, so all in all making good progress. Some pics. Engine pretty much ready to come out New engine Fitted VR6 housing and R32 thermostat
8. Not selling box anymore, engine only for sale!
9. First observation, The mk4 loom has the wrong connectors for the cam position sensors, and as this is the root of all problems with Mk4 management running on a Mk5 engine, this is not worth fiddling with to make fit. The sensors really need to stay as the Mk5 ones so the only option is to get the plugs swapped and check the pinouts, which is rather cumbersome. Really is looking best to stick with a Mk5 engine loom. No Mk5 fusebox loom yet so unable to compare this.

Mkv r32 ecu

I was speaking with vince mate, he told me to stick to one specific ecu as its easier to work on from his point of view? It's making it extremely difficult as this particular ecu......the phrase rocking horse s**** comes to mind. Appreciate the recommendations on the ecu Sam, I could go with one but do you think it will be just as easy to deimmobilise and that? Vince was saying that little changes to ecus almost bring a completely new learning curve when a few of the addresses change as everything gets moved....I'm really unsure but I do just need an ecu! Mkv r32 ecu

Bit of a long shot this but I'm after an ECU for my conversion so just sticking my request out there incase someone has one hiding! pn im after is 022-906-032-CD from a mark 5 r32 golf. Thanks
12. Sorry i just realised you already said it was for the aux pump! Kev do you suggest this is done or can I make some sort of closed off hose and clamp it on? Sent from my GT-I9100
13. Kev, I've managed to get hold of the mk5 engine loom, but no ecu to fusebox loom! Still on the hunt for an ecu too, i can make a proper comparison and write up for others now I have both a MK5 and mk4 engine loom. I was hoping still to get your help, I'm likely now to just do the loom work myself to get it working, it doesn't look that difficult! I will let you know when I get the ecu then we can meet up to get this sorted? Cheers Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
14. It took me a while to figure out what a core plug was! Is it fine to just block off the tube then? I take it this is for when you move the aux pump? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
15. Ok guys, spoke with SWICT, looks like the cam position sensor (although it doesnt change between marks) on some has a slightly different plug. To get it to work with my loom I will have to either change plugs or get the sensor with the right plug. The latter is easier.
16. I have just been looking through the wiring and checking the plugs over. The cam sensors (two grey plugs look to be at the end of each cam) don't appear to be the same fit as the plugs on my loom, how did you overcome this kev? Just order in the right plugs and wire them in?
17. Kev, sorry I meant to say on the r32 wire yes! It's another 2 pin on the same alternator bundle which is combined to make a 4 pin at the end where the alternator feed joins the battery supply via the starter motor. If both water pump and exciter run through the ecu first then I guess it could quite easily be the water pump! Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
18. Thanks Kev, I'm also having this horrible moment where I'm forgetting what another plug did! On my alternator cable (aside from the thick high current line) there is another two pin plug on the same wire, and at the other end both the alternator plug and this mystery plug are combined into a 4 pin plug! I'm a bit lost, what does this second plug run? I'm thinking it might be the secondary water pump located next to the alternator. Do I need this? I assume if not thats another plug change as it will run off the fan controller? This right? Cheers.
19. Just Re the alternator, I have removed my old one and the old engine is nearly out. Looks like I'll be reusing the connectors to run across to the starter and the battery. I notice there is a 2 pin plug on the alternator, the old one only carries a single wire from the back of the plug. The new alternator has a 2 pin plug also but 2 wires? Is this the low voltage alarm for the dash and which pin do I keep from the new alternator? Sorry its a 24v alternator, probably r32 (120A)
20. Kev, From Sam's post in the 24v thread, he has pointed me towards 2 Audi ECUs. This ECU part number Vince gave me is not producing one to buy anywhere! I was thinking I could just get me one of these Audi ECUs, do you think it would cause me any problems with the immo defeats? Or is it best to keep searching for a Mk5? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-TT-Coupe-3-2-V6-Quattro-250PK-S-tronic-ECU-8j0-907-115N-/320901527586?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4ab738b822#ht_517wt_1156 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A3-8P-3-2-V6-Engine-Control-ECU-/130676211730?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e6ce8c012#ht_914wt_986 The two Sam Posted (thanks Sam).
21. Tell you what, it's Kev isn't it? If i get hold of a Mk5 ECU with the pn Vince gave me (he said this is the best to use as he has a lot of experience and information on it) maybe we could look at this over a saturday? I'll obviously cover your fuel costs and keep you fed and watered! If you bring the r32, extra brownie points :). So mk4 R32 pedal is a no-no for the Mk5 ECU, what pedal is best to use? I really hope this is a goer, I know what you're saying about the head but this is a minter I can't deny, so I'd rather keep the engine intact. Plus just an ecu and pedal, would this not be the cheapest fix if it works, if we can get the loom to work?
22. Hi all, I know this has been covered in the 24v thread but I have decided to start my own thread in an effort to find any other help/advice. Basically the story stands as follows, I bought the job lot for the MK5 engine with MK4 everything else, so loom, ecu, pedal, ancillaries, fuel rail etc etc. Now I'm almost at the engine out point for my corrado ready to drop the new one in, but I appear to have hit a large barrier. According to both Stealth and SWICT, my setup will not work. It's down to the Mk4 engine producing a Cam position signal quite different to the Mk5, but this will not be immediately noticable. The advice provided to me by both is either to: get a Mk4 head and swap it, or a Mk4 engine, or mk5 loom, pedal and ecu. As you might imagine both routes are bringing their own problems and cost and it's getting very difficult to carry on. My first question for you knowledgable types, I have asked this already but as I said there may be others who haven't read my posts on the 24v thread. -Vince has sent me the pinouts for the most common and recommended Mk5 ECU (PN ends in CP IIRC). Now both the ECU and pedal don't seem extremely difficult to source, although I haven't yet. Does anyone know if it's possible to adapt my MK4 loom to a Mk5 ECU? I can possibly source any plugs that are different from VAG directly, but I want to avoid spending huge amounts. -I have tried to source what I need from eBay, breakers yards, and even by googling what I want or part numbers, to no avail yet. I've even had one breaker yard laugh at me! Any suggestions or know where I could source these parts? I know I have had an offer for an ECU (and appreciate it) but don't want to inconvenience you. -Finally, If it is possible and I go ahead and adapt the Mk4 loom to work with the Mk5 gear, I may as well go the whole hog and do the loom conversion into my VR6 corrado myself. The guide is fantastic but the whole loom conversion is brushed over and getting someone else to do it is favoured by most, so does anyone have a guide or advice on exactly what I need to do? I am in norwich, if there are any knowledgable types who are willing to help me with the car, I will offer what I can in return. I am hour building for becoming a commercial pilot, so anyone who helps me I will be glad to take for a flight (deadly serious, i fly a few times a week). I have text Chris (the seller NormanCoal) to see if he knows something I don't but had no reply yet, I don't know if someone is able to ask him and see if he was aware of the problems and has done the necessary to prevent this?. Please help me! I am really stumped. ---------- Post added at 2:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:41 PM ---------- I've just realised FishWick has already answered one of these, sorry mate! So the MK4 loom doesn't look much different to the Mk5? Any idea what part number I can use for the throttle pedal? These pinouts should help, so now all I really need to find is a MK5 ecu and pedal!
23. I can possibly help with this; I've been speaking with the guys who do the loom conversion. Basically most of the modern wiring does, as you say, receive information from the ECU so shares information basically. Our old engines however have a sensor to pretty much feed each that requires it, on the oil filter housing I believe there's an oil temp sensor, and a high pressure switch and low pressure switch. The high and low feed the alarm on the dash while the temp feeds the MFA. For both new and old I don't think they require any oil data for the ECU, so it's just a case of keeping all 3 if you're sticking with the old clocks. I would await confirmation from others on this but I hope this helps. I'm going to start a thread in the engine bay section in the hopes I can catch more people's attention regarding my predicament. This topic seems a lot more quiet than the forums themselves.
24. Stunt flying is great! You should try it :) sorry i digress.
25. Nah I fly the full sized ones :) RC is cool though!
