Taping/Knocking Noise! Foreign Objects in Oil Pump!
iceviolet replied to iceviolet's topic in Engine Bay
its a droning noise all the time. Not overly loud. Havent noticed it on full lock either. Notice it more when im going round a long left hander on the motorway where its just a constant left pressure on the steering wheel, then when strightened back up the droning gets quiter again but still there. Kind of changes tone when you turn the wheel to the left. hard to explain really. I also get a clunking from the drivers side when i turn hard left when givin it some. Sounds like the the suspensions jumping out of its location or something. This only happens when giving it a bit of pasty. Could this be the top mounts? -
Taping/Knocking Noise! Foreign Objects in Oil Pump!

hello, Changed the serpentine belt and i think it has made it slightly quieter. The old belt was actually a bit stiff compared to the new one. So just the chains and tensioners to do now, not much else left to change that would make a noise! Think im going to wait a few weeks to get them done, not using the car much at the minute as i have a work van to drive aswell. Plus this weekend im going to change the front wheel bearings, Ive had a kind of droning noise ever since i got the car, sounded like it was coming from the rear, changed both rear bearings, discs and pads and the noise was still there. Locating noises is quite deceiving sometimes. I noticed that when i steer to the left slightly the noise gets slightly louder??? its not a loud noise just a droning. Any know what this could be?? Ive got 2 new wheel bearing kits, 2 hubs, 2 ball joints and 2 top mount kits to put on at the same time. Would anyone suggest anything else to change while i was in there?? I was thinking about replacing the tie rod ends and ARB links but then thought they would cause any noises like that would they?? -

Took the car to my local garage and the guy couldnt be anymore un-helpfull!! Said he wouldnt take the job on of doing the chains and said he didnt know anyone in the area who would. Said it was a ball ache of a job and he could make 3 tinmes more money doing smaller jobs! Looks like i might have to try tackle it myself! -
Taping/Knocking Noise! Foreign Objects in Oil Pump!

Yes ive been reading the quide, seems quite simple to do its just the space and time i dont have to do it myself. If i could do it in a day i would have a go myself. Ive only got a small driveway and a garage half full of crap, cant get the car in, so cant just shut the garage door and carry on tomorrow. Think ill change the belt and pump just as a matter of course, eliminate two more items!!!!! -

ok, i might do that with the print out, its a good idea. Really? the belt itself? i changed the tensioner pulley bearing, but didnt put a new belt on as it looked fine. Might give it a try though. Would it be worthwhile doing the water pump too?? I have a receipt saying it was changed at 80,000 at VW. -
Taping/Knocking Noise! Foreign Objects in Oil Pump!

Backlash is just the play on the spindle before it actually engages the cog. Yes it was running fine, apart from the tapping noise, must of caught it just in time then as my crank was fine when i took the big ends off, the shells were fine too, didnt look like they even needed doing: So does anybody know anywhere around west yorkshire area for doing timing chains?? or will i have to travel to somewhere like stealth?? -

The bits hadnt gone through the oil pump, they were stuck to the gauze entering the pump, i stripped the pump down and measured it up and checked clearance and backlash and all was well within tolerance. -

Yes, im wanting to get the chains and guides done, dont really have the space and time to do it myself at the moment. Does anyone know of any decent places to get these done?? close to west yorkshire as possible?? and how long would it be off road for?? -
Hello, Im new to this forum and the corrado scene, would just like some help on my vr6. Its a late 94, ice grey violet with 126,000 miles, totally standard. Loving the car just not loving the noises its making! Ive had my vr6 since march now and its got a knocking/tapping noise and i cant figure out what it is! I first thought tappets so changed all those. No difference. I then read a topic on here about big end bearings which sounded on the money, just what i was experiencing. So i changed those, still no difference. While i was doing the bearings i decided to whip off the oil pump and give it a check over. When doing this i found part of a tensioner pad and some other bits, does anyone know what these are? There was a few more smaller bits too. What else could be making the noise apart from the chains? obviously i need to get them done but it doesnt sound like chain rattle, more a tap that that gets quieter slighty but never goes away? could the coilpack make a tapping/knocking noise if it was faulty? its just that i put some new leads on and im sure it quietened it down a for a short time. Maybe it was just me. Ive added a sound clip of the noise. Any input would appreciated, cheers, sam
