VR6 running Problem can't find answer in search update:22/06
iceviolet replied to zak's topic in Engine Bay
Or maybe too much fuel?? Mine does this sometimes but only if i floor it when its cold, it will cut out and then take a minute or two to start again. I just let it warm up for 5 or 10 minutes. My mechanic friend said its just a bit of a choke issue, a bit too much fuel when its running the cold map and by putting the pedal down too quickly when cold will just flood it and put out the spark. -
Just looking on the net for some vw 3d-cad models actually and stumbled across this: http://members.home.nl/pascalbaartmans/aaa_repair.pdf Has some good info in it, thought it may be of some use to someone?

Does it click when you turn the key?? Could be the starter motor thats stuck if it does. Happened to me, thought the immoboliser was broken, could just hear a click when i turned the key, turned out to be the starter. Turned the key and kept it turned while at the same time someone gave the starter a shock with a pole. Been alright since. worth a try?? Although it has no connection to you fitting a new battery, but could just be coincidence?

Small update: Was hoping to have the engine finished at the weekend, not to be. Unexpected weekend activities! Had to go for some vaccinations to go on a work trip to Thailand in the near future! I have managed to get a brand new oil pump from normancoal :salute: . So when that arrives i think i will try and get the engine finished soon as! I have done a little bit of work but not much. Cleaned a few bits up at work, and put the head on. A few pics of my slow progress:

I use long nose pliers, put the ends in the slots and twist and push at the same time. If they are really stuck you may need to buy a rewind tool

hi, im after some front hoses too, ive seen these http://www.balancemotorsport.co.uk/prod ... mber=53266 , has anybody on here tried these?? and will hey fit 288 brakes?? i like the choice of colours.

hi mate, think easiest way to explain your question is in this link: http://wiki.the-corrado.net/category_engine_bay.html its vr6 timing chain replacment, an excellent guide by someone on the forum. i did the headgasket a while back on my vr and was quite straight forward.

Thanks, there will be some more pics up next week hopefully, putting the head on and the chains so should be able to get some pics!

Your build is excellent mate! :salute: . I know what you mean about keeping it original, i didnt really have the option of rebuilding my original engine as i use the car as a daily, so it cant be of the road for more than the weekend! Yeah thats what i had read about the running in, keep it low revs and then oil change after a hundred miles or so, then just take it easy with it for a few thousand. I really want to get the engine in now, think ill have to wait until april through as ill hopefully be getting a company van so the car can be off the road for as long as it takes!

Ive just got some 288 calipers and carriers courtesy of bigpantsbaby, Im wanting to get some braided hoses for them, does anyone know which ones i need to get? do the standard mk3 golf hoses fit the corrado?? cheers

I havent changed the core plugs, They looked fine and to be honest i didnt want to disturb them, so hopefully they wont leak. Im dreading the heater matrix going, ballache of a job apparently! Im sure the tappets will quieten down when the piston rings are run in and you can give it some hammer. What running in procedure are you following bruny?? Im sure there may be some extra bits to be added to the price list before the engine is fully installed, such as new mounts and things, but as for the actual engine rebuild itself i dont think ive done too bad pricewise. Makes it easier having a seperate engine to work on, so you dont need to worry about getting the car back together in a hurry.

Hi, not had an update for a while, i have not really done much or had the time to. I have got all the parts together now and should get the engine finished by next week. With regard to the wiseco pistons, i never looked further into them as i decided to use the stock pistons. However i think if i did actually go for some uprated pistons i would go for the wossner pistons. From what ive read they are one of the best and a lot of people rate them. Bit more expensive but probably better quality. I dont think you would require specialist knowledge as such, the Bentley manual or the Peter Russek have all the information you need. The price tag!! As it happens, I have been keeping a record of what ive spent on the engine rebuild, all prices are rounded up to the nearest pound and inc VAT. Small items like o-rings and bolts and stuff like that i can get from work for free so they arent on the list. The only thing that isnt on the list is the oil pump, wasnt going to get a new one as ive had the old one apart and it is within tolerance but think i might put a new one in anyway. Not decided yet, they are about £100ish i think. VR6 REBUILD AAA ENGINE £150.00 RE-BORE TO 82mm £138.00 82mm PISTON RINGS £138.00 ENGINE PAINT £10.00 MAIN BEARINGS (Main Dealer) £79.00 THRUST BEARINGS (Main Dealer) £7.50 CON ROD BOLTS - ARP (Arrow Precision) £103.00 BIG END BEARING SHELLS (Ebay) £30.00 OIL SPRAY JETS (Main Dealer) £50.00 VALVE GUIDES AND STEM SEALS (GSF) £49.00 HEAD GASKET + BOLTS (GSF) £55.00 BOTTOM END GASKET SET (GSF) £44.00 TIMING CHAIN PARTS (AVS) £126.00 Total £979.50

Sounds promising, no disadvantages then?? Is installation quite simple?? Think i might go for this is. My long term plan with the corrado is to go rotrex eventually, so maybe be a wise move if it provides better options for FI.

Slight thread hijack, but is really worth converting to OBD2?? I mean is there a massive difference or not?? I ask because im going to be putting my rebuilt engine in soon and i have been considering doing the conversion as i imagine it would be a lot easier to install whilst the engine is out. Just not too certain on the advantages/disadvantages and if it would be worth the effort?? :confused4:

If it still wont start with the fully charged battery, Get someone to turn the key and keep it turned, and at the same time hit the starter motor with a pole and hammer or whater you have to hand. Thats what ive done with mine in the past. The cog that spins the flywheel sometimes just gets stuck or a bit of crap gets jammed in. A good shock normally does the trick!
-
IIRC I used a socket to go over the sensor to protect and then tapped it out with a hammer.

Yes the crankshaft was fine, no marks what so ever on it and it measured up spot on. Got the tool for putting the pistons in today. Excellent tool, so easy with that. :D Feels very smooth when turning it over by hand. Cant wait to get it in the car now. Might be a while before i do the actual swap though as i need a few more bits and funds are a bit tight. Anyhow, a few pics of the pistons in their new homes!

Im going to be doing this in the near future, theres a guide on the wiki with part no's http://wiki.the-corrado.net/rear_axle_bushes.html

Thanks for that info, ordered it today, wont be here until tuesday though

sipmleist way to measure 180 degrees! Well the piston installing hasnt gone according to plan!! Messed about for ages trying to get them in with my ground down compressor, just couldnt get it tight enough around the piston. Also tried by hand and 3 cut fingers later still not going in! So im going to get that VW tool. Is there a number for it or something?? or do i just ask for a vr6 piston installer??
-
yeah thats black marker pen. why you ask?
-
Had a couple hours in the gargage this afternoon, put the crank back in. Too cold to do anything else :camp: Im going to put the pistons in tomorrow night if i get chance. Couple progress shots:
-
well if the bottom end is alright and it hasnt had a head rebuild yet then a head rebuild wont harm it. Ive got a couple spare cylinder heads in the garage if you want to do one up without having the car in bits for days?
-
looking nice mate, you will have to let us know what its like when you get those cams in. Did you get that abs light sorted out??
-
I am considering getting some of that Dodo juice, the only thing im not sure on is which one to get that will suit my car?? i do not know a lot about waxes and there is hard ones, soft ones and then a variety of different types. My car is ice grey violet, does anyone know which would be the most appropriate?? cheers
