Institute of Advanced Motorists....anyone a member?
g60jaime replied to JMC's topic in General Car Chat
I did the Institute of Advanced Drivers course when I was 21, some six years ago to initially to reduce premiums and thought it would be worth while after driving for 4 years since passing my test to sharpen up. I think it cost £60, as I had a £10 off voucher and it was something like £70 for under 25's at the time. Agree with everything everyone else has said has been worth while but it doesn't get you much off your Insurance premium (not more then the annual membership to IAM and your subscription to your local area group). If you do it, do it to be a better driver, not to lower insurance premiums, 1. it doesn't make it worth while and 2. you'll find out thats not the point of doing the IAM training whilst doing the training. Did anyone find in funny when you had to do the running commentary on EVERYTHING you were doing, seeing, expecting for about 5mins when having your test? -
Mk 4 Rear Caliper fitting....longer pedal travel?
g60jaime replied to g60jaime's topic in Drivetrain
Thats what I thought. All gone out the window now I have contacted/purchased with Bigg Red and found out 38mm seal kits won't fit my calipers...I have 41mm piston bore calipers from either of the aforementioned cars. Am sending the actual seals out of the calipers back with the seal kit to cross reference the sets to make sure i get the right ones. Hopefully the calipers fit just the same as Mk4 Golf ones will. -
Mk 4 Rear Caliper fitting....longer pedal travel?
g60jaime replied to g60jaime's topic in Drivetrain
Just to update: Looked out for rebuild kits on the net, found out Bigg Red do rebuild kits. Ordered Mk4 Golf rear rebuild kit on internet on Sunday. Arrived today...seals looked smaller than those taken out. Dry fitted seals and definitely different over piston and in caliper housing. Rung Bigg Red and explained problem and what i was trying to achieve. They asked for any identifying numbers on my calipers as I didn't know the car they came off other than was expecting it to be a Mk 4 Golf. The numbers were 313\1 and 314/1. The notified me that according to their records and database I actually have Octavia/Golf estate calipers which have a 41mm bore piston and not 38mm standard golf ones! Have got to send back for exchange + £5 to cover postage and extra cost for different kit price difference. Was a little worried that the calipers may not be suitable for conversion as they weren't Mk4 Golf items but was recommended, but couldn't confirm, that as long as the slider pin bolts for the carrirers were still 118 mm centres apart he couldn't see why they wouldn't fit. Measured and they are 118mm. Hopefully all will be sorted!?! -
Black Corrado with all red rear lights going towards Pembury just before North Farm industrial estate today... you saw me, I saw you... very nice motor.

Just been to the VW parts desk to get a number of items, including a pair of caliper seals for the mk4 calipers that I am going to do the conversion with. The parts guy couldn't confirm the seals the computor were indicating were correct for my calipers (even though i took them along). I think he was trying to source some mk4 calipers seals for R32, 4 motion etc which have vented disks... I told him i needed seal kit for calipers used with solid disks, he couldn't source anything. Without a number plate or VIN i couldn't give him anymore, even had the seals out to show him (Lucas items with pt no's) still no joy. Does anyone know the part numbers for the seal rebuild kits for the mark 4 golf rear calipers to be used on the conversion? Failing that does anyone have a mark 4 Golf that has the same spec brakes that they could PM me with an number plate to use as a reference back at the dealers to get the right part? (We did this with a trade in car, came up with seals listed amongst R32 4 motion etc even when it was a basic w reg car) The price for these was about £14 each + Vat, not £8.50 + Vat i was expecting from doing a search on here....

New series of TOP GEAR Sundays. Series Comments
g60jaime replied to The_Dude's topic in General Car Chat
They were testing the Lexus when I was at the Nurburgring when i was there in September. It was matt black and all camoflaged, electrical tape over the badge etc, was suprised to see the outline of an L on it. Was even more suprised to hear the price of it though tonight! Even more so when 2011 spec GT-Rs were being tested a the 'ring along side the Lexus and you could tell no difference in performance between the two trackside. Difficult to see the point of it!?! 637small.jpg[/attachment:ubtpg5n4] -

Another Red VR6!!! This time a K-Reg one. Going along Old Hadlow Road into Cannon Lane Trading Estate in Tonbridge this morning at about 8.30. Sadly it looked like your exhaust smoke was faintly blue-ish. I've gone from seeing none but the same old known Corrados in the area until the last week....Xmas must bring them out.

When i was ordering some parts at VW last month I enquired about a replacement leather steering wheel for my 92 G60 and they wanted £485. Even the parts guy was suprised.
-
I would be interested in this, dependant on cost and leather to be used.

My Girlfriend got me the Single Seater experience at Silverstone on the Stowe circuit, really good fun. Made more so when it started in brilliant spring sunshine and then we all got pulled in in a freak blizzard and it was 0 visability looking like it might be cancelled all together, eventually went out in soaking wet conditions with everyone including me spinning everywhere. There were some very muddy single seaters that day, funny when in the briefing we were told under no circumstances would they tolerate spinning or any loss of control. No damage done! haha!

Like you say it will only take a couple of quid to find out, doesn't make it such a risk.....

Turned 116,000 today, turned 115,000 at the end of September on the Nurburgring no less! :D

I love the old GTs from the mid to late 90s. That looks a good one. I've got 2x LTS DH 2x 98 Carbon/Alu STS Lobos 1x 99 Alu Lobo. All brilliant. Latest purchase is a 2001 16" Zasker for my girlfriend. All of them are 100% original spec (or at least have period parts), hope the rest of the build goes well. :D

Think this might have been me!

I wouldn't go anywhere near those guys. Sounds funny but they took my Grandma for a complete ride over MOT issues on her old Astra. A list of things were done (with her permission) that didn't need doing. She paid for the work to be done because she needed the car and didn't want to part with it becasue it was my grandads old car. She does less than 1000 mile a year. The thing that stood out for me though was they failed it for rust within 300mm of suspension mounting point did the fix on it and left it. My grandma asked me to come round and wash her car for her, i pulled into her road and spotted this rough welded patch on the sill of her car from about 30m away still in my car and driving! Up close they hadn't painted it or stonechipped it or anything, and guess what.....it had started to rust! Boy did I have fun taking it back down to them to the job properly and having a go at them about fixing a rusty sill with a bit more rust! Needless to say I have taken over with the car care and she now has it MOT'd at my local, who i know well. You can't do better than go with stable recommendations, not PR and offers in my opinion (its all about profit margins not customer care and satisfaction).

Now have heated seats AND active spoiler. Just plugged black cable (green connector) back in for the seat loom. Does anyone know where to plug the blue/grey cable (grey connector) in? Presume this will illuminate the heated seat switch when i turn the headlights on?
