  1. Yup, I've had the top mounts done too, twice :(
  2. No. Wouldn't let a main dealer near any of my cars. I have had to correct their bodge-ups on too many cars in the past. £85/hr to have a 16yo screw everything up under the neglectful eye of a single experienced mechanic. I don't want a tollerant MOT tester; I want a reliable, well made car. It has just failed on rear suspension arm bushes, brake hoses and tyres damaged by rubbing (which I admit is my fault for having 17" wheels). These are crucial safety components, and I am glad they picked them up, but want to get shut for a car which doesn't have 3-4 major safety components fail per year. I had to replace the entire hydraulic clutch mechanism just 3 months ago, the rear wing is playing up and the handbrake has been a chocolate fire guard ever since I first owned the car. It fails every single year due to the crappy Girling calipers either seizing, or failing completely.
  3. Well, another year, another MOT failure for my C I have had this car since 1994 and it has never, not once, passed its MOT 1st time. As it gets older the list of knackered stuff gets longer and the bills get bigger, so after this one I will definately be getting rid. It's not like I haven't looked after it either. FFS, in 2001 I spent over a grand replacing every component on every corner, from struts and dampers through to disks, pads, bearings and even hubs and calipers. It still failed its next MOT, and some of the parts it failed on were only 4 months old :x I've had enough. As much as I still love the looks, the handling is nothing much compared to many of todays cars, and the performance is woeful (1.8 16V) too. Once we've got a few miles out of the latest repairs she will be sold or PX'd against a Mazda MX5 for the G/F to do her hairdressing from, and I shall bid farewell to VW ownership for the forseeable future, as they don't make a single car which interests me any more, and haven't for a long time. I'll still admire everyone elses when I see them on the road, and in time the cost, pain and irritation of owning a C will fade and the memories will be fond, but for now I can't wait to get shut.
  4. Thanks for the advice. I know a guy who has 2x C's who may let me swap it with his. I'm pretty sure he has an early 16V and a newer VR6 so we may have both bases covered. I am guessing that the controller is amongst the other relays above the main fuse bank behind the dash where my right knee would normally be ? The top right is the indicator relay, I know that one. Any idea which the spoiler controller is ?? I'll also ask around for a mate with a multi-tester !
  5. So, it could be one of three things. The spoiler controller under the dash, the microswitch or the gearbox. My own suspicions lie with the controller or microswitch, so I think I will source a controller first and try that. Is there anyone in Leeds that would care to let me try theirs before I dip into my pocket for one ?
  6. RW1, on the pics it mentions two "switching notches" suggesting that the microswitch is actioned on both the up and down sweeps, one at each end of the top rack.... Or am I misunderstanding ?
  7. I found this on here over the weekend.... ...which show only one microswitch.
  8. Speed seems just as it has always been, and the motor does not seem to be labouring at all. Certainly doesn't feel warm to the touch. As I said, it seems to move just as it should and then stops at the halfway down part without any drama, as if the microswitch is just saying stop.
  9. The spoiler on my C has decided it doesn't like going all the way down any more :x On the button it will go up, and then down half way. I've disengaged the motor and wound it manually and it moves very freely, so it isn't sticking at any point in its cycle. I also removed the wing and lubricated the shafts, although they really didn't need it. When I listen to the motor when lowering it does seem like it gets to a point where it just stops so I think it could be the microswitch. Can this be replaced independently, or is it a complete unit :?: If I need a complete unit, where would I get one, as I would think it will be a VW only part :?: Any other help, tips, hints or advice welcome.
  10. Been done in a Scooby HERE. Twin turbo and supercharged.
  11. Yup ! http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/download.php?id=26177
  12. Wrong in so many ways
  13. There is a 'Rado in there :x http://tanetane92.web.infoseek.co.jp/20050116tas1.html
  14. Well, the g/f used it today for her work (mobile hairdresser) and she hasn't reported any problems to me yet  Glad I got it all done though, as otherwise she'd have wanted to use my Scoob to go hairdressing on the snowiest, iciest day of the year, leaving it parked on some council estates during a school holiday
  15. Well, started to fit the slave and the nut holding the flexi-pipe wouldn't come off  Tried and tried being very careful not to round the nut which felt as soft as putty, but there was no way it was gonna budge and it ended up round :x Main dealer part only, and they said they could get me one for 8.30 the next morning Did a little more investigating whilst everything was in bits and found that with the flexi-pipe crimped off that I could still depress the clutch, suggesting the master cylinder may also be on its way out Europarts could get me one the next morning so I downed tools for the night. Went out this morning in -5º icy conditions  and was back by 9.30am with all the bits. Had the job done by 11am. Still too late for me to join my Scooby mates on a blast around the Yorkshire Dales though :( Many thanks to Supercharged for the help.
  16. And true to form, the (s)dealer don't keep them. GSF it is then.
  17. Agree. Which is why I still love my C, for it's great styling, rarety, individuality and superb (for its day, and even now) handling; and why my Scoob has pretty much the same power as when I bought it although the handling has been improved beyond belief which I feel now matches the power of the car.
  18. I was tempted to go Jap, and did. Bought a Scooby WRX PPP in Jan last year and talked the g/f into adopting the C. In nearly 2 years the Scoob hasn't had a single fault. 25k miles, 4 track days, many (very) high speed blasts around country lanes and not a single problem. I have modified various bits and have always found everything to be superbly engineered, much better than the C, but the C is over 14 years old now. Performance-wise they are poles apart. 0-60 4.8s, 1/4 in 13.5, 155mph (official - but I have seen 175 on the clock) the Scoob just flies in every situation, but my C is only a 16V. Handling-wise the C is superb still, but showing its age even though a couple of years back she was treated to every single part that rolls, bounces or brakes new on every corner. The Scoob has fully adjustable coilovers (free from a mate) and uprated adjustable ARB's, and combined with that famous 4WD grip is devastating cross country. Would I go back to German, possibly ? I like the look of the new RS4, but it's way out of my price league and was trounced around Bedford's West Circuit in February's Evo mag by an Evo MR320 worth almost half as much by 4 seconds a lap. It was also outclassed by an M3CS on the Welsh twisties. The R32 is outshone even by its own little brother, the GTi. An M5 would be awesome, but again, is way out of my league and the M3 I drove left me a little cold. So, I'll probably stay Jap ! On my hit list are a Nissan 350Z, Subaru Forester STi (330bhp/330ftlb), Impreza Spec C and Evo X (oh, baby !). I do however have a craving to try a BMW M3 Coupe (not 3 series) sometime. 330bhp through the rear wheels sounds like fun to me, and I love the qwerky styling.
  19. In case you guys are interested, there's several debates going on over on Scoobynet regarding number plates, ANPR, RFID, ISA etc. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=479361 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=478809 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=471241 ...but the basis for these discussions are the following articles.... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/15 ... _database/ http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/transp ... 334686.ece http://www.pito.org.uk/what_we_do/ident ... n/anpr.htm I have written to my MP, who duly wrote to the Home Secretary whom replied with the run of the mill anti terrorism/crime reduction justification. I am currently formulating my response, but in the meantime I urge every free individual, motorist or not, to oppose this infringement on the freedom to travel within this society.
  20. Thanks, the pipe looks OK. I'm hoping it's not the master as it will probably be a biatch to remove.
  21. Thanks, I'll ring the local VAG dealer in the morning to get a price. Although, whenever I've wanted anything from a dealer it's always been out of stock, available in 2-10 days. GSF and EP always seem to have what you need.
  22. The clutch on my 'Rado went last night  The pedal stuck halfway down and I couldn't select any gears. Managed to get it moving and balanced revs to tease it into 1st-3rd gears just to limp home. I read in another thread on here that it is probably the slave cylinder, which my old man (retired mechanic) concurs. We've had a go at bleeding it but it still isn't right, so I'll pop down and get one tomorrow, presuming the shops are open. A few questions :- Is the master cylinder under the dashboard ? Is the fluid for the clutch system the same as the brake fluid, and from the same reservoir, as I can't find another res ? Is there any point in buying the expensive master cylinder, as both places list an OEM and a budget part... Europarts - ATE - 137440040 - CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER GO/JE/VE/PA/T4/SH - £44.63 GUTTMANN - 137440041 - CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER GO/JE/VE/PA/T4/SH - £31.49 GSF - 71689 - CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER-FAG CO 9/88 - 36.50 71689A - CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER CO 9/88 - 29.00 Any other hints, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
  23. Just thought I'd share the pics from our trackday at Blyton (Rallydrive). Our next one will be on October 1st should anyone care to join us. Scoobynet Gallery Link
  24. Does anyone know a supplier of the above part ? GSF have none, nor Europarts, and I'm told VW have no stock either :( Thanks for any help.
  25. Mods, I have placed this in the correct forum, but would like to catch as many people as possible so could you please leave this link in General until it drops off the 1st page. Do not post interest on this link, go HERE instead, thanks.
