Electrolytic cap = Electrolytic Capacitor. (Check out the components pointed to by the red arrows in the pic below). A visual inspection probably won't show up any defects unless they have leaked, bulged or in the case of the larger one in the pic split the vent in the top. The only way to test is remove and measure their electrical characteristics and if you're doing that you may as well put new ones in anyway as they are pennies. Another thing to check is the solder joints on the relays.

I didn't look at the ebay listing. Are the repos not as good as the VW originals?
-
One point to note is the module has 4 electrolytic cap inside. These are more than likely getting to the end of their service life.
-
Thanks for the heads up. I'll withdraw them for sale. I thought they were NLA.

Not for £14. PM me a ZIP code and i'll get a price.

I'm not familiar with Sony's. If there is an inter-station muting option the audio output may well be muted when the radio is not tuned in. If you live in a high signal strength area stick a length of wire in the Antenna input and see if you can tune into a local station. If you can tune into a station check the live feed to the Antenna on the roof. If your radio does not have inter-station muting & there is no static noise when the radio input is selected and gain is turned up i'd suspect there is a fault in the head-unit itself.

Bump to the top...

Steve, Can you wait until Mon / Tues next week? As per my post I want to valet the car first.

Thanks Adam.

I thought the Concours d'Elegance guys would be all over this on. I'm hesitant to state it's a genuine VW / Audi part as I don't have the original packaging but looks exactly like the OEM part on my car.
