  1. Good to hear you're getting stuck in before you get too discouraged. Probably a good job you didn't catch up with them, we all know who'd end up in trouble if they slipped into the road and broke their legs... Best of luck getting it sorted back out. Stone
  2. Not another one! :( Hope it all straightens out ok. Stone
  3. I was very impressed with mine - and that's a bargain, mine was £30! Good thick plastic and they clip into the existing mounts perfectly. Stone
  4. I was getting ominous creaking noises when moving off from stationary - not binding yet but it certainly sounded like they were getting there. I should get the car back tomorrow, I'll let you know the verdict! Stone
  5. Have you got access to Vagcom? You can check what the ECU thinks the temperature sensor is reading (hidden away in the measurement blocks somewhere) so you can tell if it's a sensor problem or that the gauge is stuck.
  6. I got very good service from C & R when I bought my stainless hoses. There are two types of Mk4 caliper (the ones used on 288s and 312s - both banjo bolts but one revision has 1mm thread pitch and the other 1.5mm) and I got the wrong bolts in my order - but when I emailed them they sent me a new set free of charge :) I used this set but you probably want this one - if you measure the thread pitch on your calipers first then you can be sure of getting the right bolts first time. Very reasonable prices too... If you're draining/bleeding the brakes anyway there's no reason not to fit mk4 rears to be honest - they aren't expensive (mine were £50, plus £15 for new pads) and you can reuse your existing discs. I just went for peace of mind since I was getting some extra work done at the same time (rear beam bushes, both rear wheel bearings) so they were coming off anyway. Stone
  7. Can Autoglass etc still supply the windscreens? Had some gravel flung up at me yesterday and I've a few surface chips now :( At least they didn't go all the way through, but they probably will at the next frost...
  8. The stealers have gone a bit mad lately, they still want £186 for a gear selector cover... Febi thermostats are £7.86 from here though :) Stone
  9. Check the MAF first - sounds similar to how mine was. It was most noticeable if you accelerated hard, then the revs dropped right down and it really struggled. I used to have a cone filter jubilee-clipped direct to the MAF (with no bracket holding it) and the weight of the filter caused the intake piping to bounce up and down, which gave the MAF wiring metal fatigue and one of them snapped. It was quite hard to spot but just pull back the rubber boot on the MAF plug and check all the wires are secure :)
  10. The Lupo blades press quite tightly to the screen so they wipe reeeeeally slowly if there's not enough moisture on the screen to lower the friction. Try filling your washer reservoir with strong washer fluid (less water than normal) and giving them a blast - should do the same thing. My wipers are so slow in the gentle rain/drizzle we're getting at the mo that I end up using the washers just because I fear for the washer motor!
  11. Just in case anyone does this in future, the voltage reg is item 25, part #357 919 803. (From here) edit: actually, it turns out it's a bog-standard KA7810A regulator and you can replace it for 22p :D Stone
  12. I do electronic rework if you aren't happy changing it yourself. You're welcome to post it over if you like :) Stone
  13. Don't forget that drilled or grooved discs will wear down the surface of your brake pads much faster - not good if you swap to expensive sports pads! There's a good reason the stock ones are plain... Stone
  14. New clocks and spoiler module?
  15. I was quite glad of the VR this morning, a pickup speeding towards me lost a 8'x1' metal-clad crawl board as it rounded a bend. It bounced down the road about ten feet behind me, if I'd been a half-second slower it would have come through the windscreen at 60... As I was stopped with hazards on moving it out of the road the driver appeared from round the bend..."Sorry mate, the bungee snapped on us" :agrue: Stone
  16. They only came with 280s as standard. People fit all sorts but most commonly 288s and 312s - 312s won't fit under 15" wheels but 288s will fit under some 15" rims. My 312s should be going on later in the week, will have 16" Oz Ultraleggeras to go over them once they've been refurbed :) Stone
  17. Correction: Not with the ignition on as you have the resistance of the car. If the gauge is wired into the switched-live feed then turning on the ignition also turns on the ECU/internal fans/fuel pump etc etc etc so you're not getting the unloaded battery voltage. You need to measure it with your new multimeter (;)) with the ignition off. Pint of beer says you get round about 12.5V! (and if less then it'll be because you've part-flattened the battery by starting it without a working alternator to recharge it...) Stone
  18. I'm not going to fiddle with the harness until it's actually running properly ;)
  19. You have a trailing ] in that link ;)
  20. Yes, it should. A multimeter would really come in handy...try this one, you'll get a lot more than £7.50's value out of it! Not increasing when the motor's started is most likely alternator. You may not have many goes at starting it left if the battery's not charging so take it gently and leave the heater off! Stone
  21. Aha, I hadn't spotted that! I thought maybe you'd found some cunning way to delete the ISV  Stone
  22. When you remove the dials, is the clear plastic bit in the centre supposed to come away with the knob or stay in the control unit? When I took my fan speed dial off it came away in three pieces and I'm not quite sure what's supposed to go where. Actually I was down the scrappy yesterday (and sitting in a Mk3!) so I'm quite annoyed I didn't think to take its dials with me now... (on a related note, is the unit compatible with the Corrado one? If so why does everyone not use Golf ones instead?)
  23. With the spoiler up it happens even earlier! The real problem is people not leaving any stopping distance, regardless of how old the car is. I always slow down a bit to give myself extra room (so I can brake more gently if I have to and give them half a chance of not hitting me) but that usually makes them even more aggressive! Can't win :) Stone
  24. I did, but no reply so far...forum may have eaten it though! Just wanted to check the central locking cable was still attached. I could do with both the caps that hide the windscreen wiper nuts as well if you could chuck them in :) Stone
