Cold weather=Creaky Sunroof???

Recommended Posts

Got in the car this morning and a creaking noise was driving me crazy!

Turns out to be the sunroof! Once opened or tilted the noise would stop. Once the interior warmed up, the creaking also stopped.

Any ideas to prevent this?

Probably the rubber seal gets harder as it gets colder, and creaks on the surround as the body flexes.

Try wiping a very thin smear of grease onto the seal.

Best wishes

Mine does this too. Really freaked me out when it first happened!

Timo.

P.S. Keep the car in a heated garage. That'll cure the problem! 8)

i used to use vaseline  ..........................erm for the mr2 roof panels that is  keeps the rubber supple and watertight

coolrado, Vaseline rots the rubber... you need to use a non-petrol/oil based lubricant on rubber... ;) (didn't they teach you that in sex-ed?)

Silicone grease or PTFE grease (white grease) lightly smeared around the seal will stop it without rotting the seal... 8)

ah well lucky i havnt used it on the rado then, looks like the rubber trim on the mr2 will go the same way as the rest of the car then, you could see the bodywork rotting in front of your eyes in this sort of weather

its also less embarassing buying silicone grease

What is the weather strip made of then? Was rubber last time I looked....with some kind of flock anti-squeak coating that attracts moss!.

Despite advances in technology, common old squeaks and creaks still plague some brand new VWs, it seems.

My son's Lupo GTI is having a new spoiler fitted under warranty  to eliminate about the 3rd or 4th squeak from the car.

A neighbour with a new Polo has also, without having hearing about my son's troublesome car, been back to her (different)VW garage with complaints.

Mostly, I believe, the noises are due to plastic/rubber/metal materials rubbing together as the cars bounce along the road.

Perhaps a dip in a bath of silicon lubricant would help (may cause a problem to brakes?

Wot rubber seal???

There isn't one on the Corrado roof.

At all...

Eh? what's the seal that goes around the outside of the metal panel made of then?!? Felt like rubber to me when I swapped mine between the metal panels of the 3 sunroofs I've had in my 'rado before I moon-roofed her! :p
