Thinking of getting a Corrado, should I?

Im fed up with my slow car (1 litre toyota yaris) and decided its time to change. Ive always liked them and think its worth investing in a future classic. Ive read the buying guide and found it really usefull, however i wouldnt mind some input on day to day running. It'll be my only car and be used every day prob doing about 15k miles a year.

 

1)Is there one model which would suit me? VR6 sounds good but expensive to run???

 

2)Best place for servicing? I dont know much about cars at all and i would have to take it to a garage, any recemdations espically near derby

 

3) most of the cars around seem to high milages, im not too bothered about the milage on its own it just i dont want a ex boy racer mobile thats done 100k hard miles (mine has done 90k but thats all motorway miles).

 

4) wheres the best place to find one? Looked on the autotrader site and the choice was limited.

 

Any suggestions would be greated with a :D.

Of course you should buy a Corrado. It's one of the all-time "cars you must drive before you die".. Whether you'll keep it is another matter..

 

1) depends on budget, character, insurance ratings. Only you can answer this question.

 

2) depends where you live. find a good VW specialist (independant).

 

3) high miles can mean high costs, but it really depends on how they've been treated. What do you want us to say?

 

4) autotrader, and here. there's other places, but how hard can you be bothered to look? Choice is limited simply because there's not many out there! 10,000 sold in the UK, TOTAL, over the 7 years the model was available. Of that, who knows how many have been written off or exported. That's not going to result in pages and pages of entries in auto trader 10 years later, is it!! :)

1) Depends on your budget? Any corrado will cost more to run than your yaris... So how much are you looking to spend on the car? insurance? I don't think there's much variation in fuel economy between the different models... around 30mpg I think is the norm.

 

2) Stealth Racing isn't too far from you (about 50miles)

 

3) Like you said high miles doesn't mean a lot on these cars, finding one in good nick is the most important thing... people on the forum have come to realise how little full VW service history means too.. depending on which model you chose, theres plenty of advice on here for what to look out for

 

4) The Classifieds on this forum. Thats how I found mine :)

Reesy, you haven't mentioned insurance. At your age I'd get an insurance quote before you do anything else.

in answer to your first question I think you're going to be looking at a 1.8 16v since you're 21, unless you have a really friendly insurance company or you're loaded! I average between 25-30mpg in my valver but i do have a lead foot! generally valvers are cheaper to run since they share engines with the 16v mk2 golf/jetta and (IIRC) a passat meaning spares are resonably easy to find and most garages are capable of fixing them without any hasstles. dont be put off by it being the 'bottom of the range' engine either, they're fast enough and bags of fun.

To answer your questions,

 

1. It really depends on your budget, id recomend a VR6 if your doing 15k miles a year, nice and smooth and great on the motorway.

2. Your in Derby yeh?A goodindependant VW specialist near to you (Nottingham) is C and R enterprises, a little expensive, but Steve Creswells knowledge is good, if a little tedious sometimes :lol: .

3.You dont get that many Corrados that are owned by boy racers, if you see what that you think has been abused, walk away.

4. the obvious best places to get looking for a Corrado are this Forum and auto trader, but you would be suprised as to wear you will find one...Look in all good free ad mags etc etc, you never know. :wink:

I was think of spending around £3.5k on the car itself and done an insurance quote of £920 for a 2l 16v fully comp which is reasonable and only £300 more than im paying now. I guess that common sense is the key to all this, also would i be better off getting a standard un-modded car so to avoid bodge jobs?

insurance quote sounds good. can i ask who you got that from ? i was 19 when i got my 16v and went for third party fir and theft and it was more thant that.

It was from churchill with 2 years NC and with a clean license, there is probably somewhere cheaper but i use that as a reference. That car looks pretty dam nice, will have to start saving, Anyone want to by a yaris? :D

£3.5K should get you a nice lowish mile 2.0 16V! and as far as insurance goes that sounds like a good price you've got there... especially as its group 16!

 

I've had a fair few problems with my valver but mine was a special case... most tend to be good solid cars and are reliable.

Certainly from an insurance perspective - an unmodified car would be much beter & cheaper. Many insurance companies do not like modified cars & some will increase their quotes quite considerably.

 

As for the quality of the modifications - that will depend entirely on each individual car. Some are bodged & some are done very professionally. Many of the forum users have well modified cars & many have very good quality standard spec ones.

 

Whichever car you decide to buy - I'm sure somebody from the forum would be willing to have a look at it with you.

I've got a 2.0l 16v.....good compromise on power/insurnace, so to answer your initial question, whay haven't you bought a C yet???????

Its been a lack of money, only finished Uni in the summer. Now the money is rolling in its new car time, the only other car i was considering was an Audi coupe, Im gussing most people here would go for a Corrado

I had a 1 litre Yaris as a hire car and managed 56 in 2nd LOL. I prefer the C a bit all round to the Audi Coupe but of course I woud say that. If you'r into modding I would say get a 2.0 16v/G60 and if not, get a VR6 but at 21 you will need a few NCB to get a good quote, particularly on a VR6.

im not to fussed on modding, I'm just after something thats fun to drive quick and pretty reliable. I'm not expecting toyota levels or reliability as i know that i'll be buying a car thats at least 10 years old, however i dont want to be going back and foreward to the garage getting it repaired every week

Which car you buy & wether you get a "good one" or not will, to a certain extent, be down to luck.

 

I've had my G60 for 2 years now, the only necessary repairs have been a supercharger rebuild & new waterpump.

 

I have spent much more money & time modifying it. :shock:
