I do not work for them but I have one fitted to my VR6. I am sure some people have had problems with all systems but as John said it comes down to the fitting. I changed purely because the standard system was 10 years old and needed a change. Milltek has one of the best reputations with German sports cars which can be viewed from their website and the fact John has one fitted to his motor - which is one of the hottest Corrado's in the country!

It's stupid slagging off a product on a forum that atleast a relevant percentage of users own.

I know Supersprint are good - Asim and Kev have them. I know Magnex are good - Guy has one. Ben has a powerflow because it is the most custom you can get on an off the shelf product. None of them complain.

Myself, Woody and John have Milltek's on our much loved vehicles and have no problems. I bought the Milltek because of the name, guarantee, image and finish not because I wanted a loud noise or the car to go 1% faster.

I've got a VAG exhaust Neil if you mean me? I've used SuperSprint in the past on my Golfs though and remember how good they were.

 

No one is out to put Milltek out of business by this and Corrado systems account for a very small percentage of their sales. IIRC it was John Mitchell that talked Milltek out of pulling Corrado systems from their catalogue? It is unfortunate that some of us have bad experiences of Milltek systems and that can't be undone, but as mentioned already, they are a very professional outfit and take aftersales care very seriously, as I can testify.

I inherited my Milltek system on my new Corrado, i am impressed with the way it sounds and looks (even if i think the tailpipe looks slightly too long). The only thing i will say is that it sounds a bit farty at the rear when cold but that soon goes when it warms up.

Get a US-spec Rado, and I can guarantee you that you hardly hear anything inside, very civilised. Only during the summer when I occasionally have the window down (normally use the airco :lol:) do I hear some pleasant popping sounds from my Milltek when shifting down.

Well I have the same problem with my miltek too and its really getting to me now. I wont say who fitted it but they did know what they are doing and have had problems with every one so far and it all seems to have something to do with the bend over the rear axle

I have come across some rubber bump stops being fitted to German Rados where their exhaust piping was hitting the rear axle. Would this be an option for some of the Milltek systems here?

 

Mine doesn't seem to hit the rear axle (yet).

In all the cases of rear axle contact that have been brought to my attention, it has been due to the fact that the fitter has not cut down the centre pipe sufficiently in order to give the correct system length. The centre pipe is supplied longer than required in order to accomodate different length cats fitted at times to the Corrado. If this centre pipe is not accurately shortened, the over axle section of the system will not be positioned so as not to contact with the beam. One also has to accomodate the tendancy for stainless steel systems to grow in length as they attain full operating temperature. This growth can be up to 30mm, so again the fitter must consider this also when installing the system. A system when cold in this example may fit well, but because insufficient clearance has been made by centre pipe length, will knock as it becomes hotter in use, or vice versa. Please do not jump to the assumption that the system is always at fault, in my experience it is more a matter of the system being fitted correctly and the use of the correct rubber hangers.

The problem is the hanger bar on the middle box is welded in the wrong place, as I have mentioned numerous times.

 

During my trip to Milltek, they faffed around with this pipe you mentioned for a while and then they agreed that the hanger was welded in the wrong place and moved it 2" further up the pipe....and voila, problem solved :roll:

 

And the irony of it was it took a non exhaust "specialist" to discover this fundamental flaw and why should customers have to cut and shut their £300 exhausts to get them to fit? SuperSprints go straight on with no hacking up of centre sections.....

Kev, with all due respect you are taking a view purely based upon your own short term experiences of your VR6, one which both myself and Milltek took very sincerely, and i think their actions are somewhat harshly described on your part as "faffing around" Every effort possible was made to satisfy your needs. Whilst you as an individual were clearly not to be content with a Milltek system many others before and since have. I however was taking a view in my last post based upon the complete range of systems wherein the majority of sales are to the 4 cylinder engined Corrados.

 

I respect the fact that you are entitled to your opinion, but no one product is going to satisfy everybodies needs.

Would have to agree here, as that's what also made mine crack recently (as described in the general car chat forum nearly 2 weeks ago). The crack occurred in the pipe leading into the midbox. My Powerflow fitment garage rewelded and re-inforced the crossbar on the piping just ahead of the midbox, used stronger hangers in that section and towards the rear box, and hopefully that should have cured it. The system had been fitted by the previous owner (don't know who the fitting garage were, just that it would be somewhere up in Scotland, where I picked the Rado up from) approx. 2 to 3 years ago.

My exhaust used to rub on rear axle. have adjusted it and only rubs now when I got 3 passengers....

 

But looking under the car at the back box the rubber "Hooks" or mounts seem to Sag or stretch quite a lot. Do these things that Super mention above reduce this "sag"?

And if so where can I get em from???

John, please don't take my remarks as in anyway derogative towards you or Milltek. I am merely compounding customers' feelings about the knocking issue. Yes my own particular grievances were somewhat different and I haven't gone into that in any detail, but I still suffered the knocking regardless of the other issue. I am afraid it is definitely due to the hanger being welded in the wrong place, even Milltek themselves looked at that and rewelded the hangers to the correct location on the pipe. It's something they need to revise if they are to continue with Corrado systems.

 

As mentioned already, yours and their service were exemplary and I could not fault that aspect of my ordeal at all.

 

It is unfortunate that Milltek were not able to fulfill my requirements but that is not to say no one else will be unsatisfied with their products.

 

From what I can gather from this thread, there seems to be a 50/50 split in opinions, so clearly a fundamental design flaw exists. It's just that some people (no offense to them) are not as fussy as I am.

Well I'm very particular about how my exhausts fit, having had bad experiences with Longlife and Piper. My Miltek doesn't rub or bang EVER. Even four up on a bumpy road. Perhaps it's to do with the amount by which the car is lowered? Mine's lowered 40mm?

Mine's lowered 40mm aswell and it knocked with just me in the car. As I say, 50/50 split in opinions.
