More dynamat fun

I must have one of the quietest Rados around now, LOL!

 

I'm only aware of A20_LEE going to town with the stuff as much as I have....makes one hell of a difference. I worked it out and there's about 40Kg of the stuff in the car now, so I really ought to supercharge it.

 

Clearance between the sunroof and the dynamat is tight!

 

Been round and replaced ALL clips and replaced missing screws too and it's completely rattle free on a cruise now, only really big bumps make the dash creak a little and that's it. Every single plastic panel has been lined with foam strips.

 

A quiet and rattle free Corrado is a nice place to be :D

He he, I know I am a nutter and now that it's BMW quiet, I'm loving it even more now! There's just something about an old VW with modern refinements :D

Nice job Kev 8) Your C was damned quiet the other week when I was in it, so what it's like now, I can only imagine :)

 

Does that shot mean that you've fixed the sunroof as well??

Will have to go for a spin in your Rado at some point Mr Haywire.. would love to see the difference that a fully dynamatted and well sorted interior has on road noise from the Corrado!

Yeah it makes one heck of a difference. I wouldn't do it again mind, but whilst doing the stereo install and sorting the sunroof, I thought it rude not to slap some on.

 

And err, Dinkus, yeah the sunroof now works...ish!. It tilts and drops fine, but still doesn't slide - with the motor. I can wind it back and forth with the crank handle and the gouging has been sorted, so although it does work, I just have to open/close it at home before I set off to avoid the embarrasment of being seen to open something manually in public.

 

I'm hoping in time that the tub of grease I crammed into all the runners etc will loosen up all the new parts.....but I reckon the subframe is fecked any hoo.... MK3 subframe no good, too different.

 

It's this kind of thing that leaves emotional scarring. I have blue smoke ingrained into my head from my Allegro days, so I now drive with my nose up my exhaust pipe, and now I have Sunrooves to haunt me till the day I die.....

Yeah.. even though the sunroof on mine was fixed, I was too scared to actually use it thanks to the fear of it all breaking again! Its amazing what a bad experience with cars will do to your mind! :)

mine tilts fine but the waterplate guides are worn so they dont pull the roof down low enough, so it will scratch if i slide it back

oh well ..what are windows for

i rather have tilt than slide anyhoo

 

stealers quoted £35 per side for the guides :shock:

Yep, I replaced the water plate guides and a few other bits and now it's all too tight for the motor :roll: Cured the scratching though.

 

Doesn't bother me. I love sunroofs being open, so if it needs opening manually, so be it :)

reallysuperb mate. I too am one for whom the quietness and refinement of the car is important. Where did you put the dynamat apart from teh sunroof? I think there was another thread about an alternative soundproofing which is pretty cheap and since I have the carpet out its probably a good time to have a go at it. I've also used a lot of felt around the plastic trims especially on the dash components but I am always listening out for the next rattle. Surprsingly cables that knock against panels make a racket so they need foam around them. Mines only got the normal stuff under the carpets and nothing else. I was thinking of using normal carpet underlay as I've still got loads left over. Any thoughts, advice there?

Looks good Kev. I'm going to do this at some point, although not quite to the extent you have! Maybe just a bit on the doors and in the boot, which seem to be the noisiest areas. I also need to go around lining the inside boot plastic-cover-thing and stop its incessant squeeking.

Heh heh, my Mk3 sunroof works perfectly and gets used quite a lot. Shame it's attached to Mk3 tho... :lol:

Where did you put the dynamat apart from teh sunroof?

 

Ermm, Entire boot - floor and arches, Under the rear seat bench - triple layered :oops:, Inner and outer door skins and the backs of the door cards, backs of cards and the rear 1/4 panels.

 

The dynamat has neoprene pads on top of it aswell (except the roof as there's no room!) for further noise reduction.

Yeah some people use B&Q lead flashing or there's Audioscapes dynamat equivalent which is about £70 for a huge sheet. I used that and some of the B&Q stuff. Should have used the Audioscape stuff throughout but I didn't know about it at the time.

You got it! That's basically what you need to do. For example on mine, the A pillar trim had no clips on it at all, so it was litterally hanging there and flapping about. Feckin previous owners....for the sake of 5p a clip :roll: Some of my trims were siliconed down aswell, muppets.

There's no real need to do the main floor mate as they went to town at VW. The Bulkhead needs doing imo but feck taking the dash off!

Did all mine too, right through from the back panel to the firewall, all the doors, the pillars, the roof, the rear 1/4's everywhere I could stick it. I bought two 2mx1.5m sheets of noisekiller and have done the whole car with it. I could only just lift the two rolls together, the poor postman struggled with that one!! I could not believe the difference it made to the car. The doors thunk much better, you can hardly hear any road noise, I could speak on the handsfree and hear everything perfectly. Well worth the extra weight. I now also have the added bonus of the proper MK4 golf firewall sound deadening matt inside the engine bay, that should make a big difference.

I thought mine had a fair old chunk of sound deadening in it, but it's only double layer at the most...

 

Jim? I'll take you out in mine at some point before I throw the mad engine in it and you'll be amazed at how quiet it is... it's pretty much rattle free even though the dash undertrays have almost no screws holding them in at the moment (not my fault, car came like that and I've not been arsed to put a load in yet... ;) )

 

Mine's also had the floor and (from the looks of things) the bulkhead done with dynamat... they're even done the inside of the dash! :| Someone, somewhere went a little mad when they had my car before I got my mitts on it... :lol:

I wish my corrado was rattle free :( I spent hours soundproofing my boot last week (which did make a big difference) however I still have some really annoying rattles which seem to be coming from the rear passenger side panels, but I can't tell where exactly yet :mad:

 

I'm hoping once I do my doors it'll be even quieter...

try looking at the parcel shelf where it sits on the side shelves, the covering on the parcel shelf starts to get flattened down and then starts to squeek, if you just rough the fabric up with a blunt knife or stiff brush it usually stops it. if it looks shiney it will probably make a creaky rattling sound as you go over bumps

Yeah all sorts of things like that cause creaking and rattles etc but the biggest contributor of rattles I found was nothing more than missing clips and screws. There's 100s of the darn things all over the place.

 

Karmann went to great lengths to silence rattles with plenty of felt padding throughout. But sadly previous owner seldom take the same care when putting the interior parts back, so they develop rattles over the years.

 

I basically used 3 or 4 rolls of sticky backed felt and foam and covered every single plastic panel and by god does it work!

 

As Jay said, the way the car changes is unbelievable. Ever wonder how Maybach etc get silent cars? Well, what we've done accounts for a good 60% of it :wink:
