Diavia Aircon info thread.

There's an input to the ECU from the A/c that makes the revs jump when you switch on, it's not simply the load on the compressor does it. The gas would be the obvious place to start if it runs but doesn't cool.

They should be the same in all Corrados, nothing specific about the valver as far as I know. I used a Jetex one because AFAIK VAG don't make one that fits. Ordered it direct from Jetex for about £20 delivered.

hi guys, i know this is an old thread but does anyone know if it is possible to get hold of the original diavia blower housing unit, my vr has had a/c from almost new but it looks like someone has ripped out the a/c blower housing and replaced it for a stadard one when motor must have given up.

also 3 of the wires have been cut in the part of the loom that is near the battery tray (a green, a green/black and white), these are next to 2 connectors, one looks like it has a resistor or sensor on it (orange, red/black) and the other is not connected to anything (yellow/green and red/black)

if anyone could shed some light, it would be much appreciated? thanks

I've got an evaporator you can have, but I want to keep the fan in case mine packs up. Where are you based? Your best bet is to speak to Keith at ACEngineering (01932 570333) he installed mine and can't recommend him enough. I've also got a loom but again want to keep the relays.

is the evapoarator still in the housing... that would be awesome. Just pulled out the norm/max switch to discover that its not connected to anything so would probably need the loom as well. How much do you want for the pair(minus fan and relays)?

Im based in cheshire, where abouts is ace engineering?

Yep still in it's housing. ACEngineering is in Chertsey, Surrey. You can have the bits for free mate I won't be using them.

Thats fantastic, much appreciated!! the only problem is i live quite far away, would you be willing to post them if i send you some money for postage and something for your troubles?

or alternatively i could drive down and make a visit ACeng at the same time, what does he charge roughly for a full install?

Yeah I can post it if you want it's quite heavy but if you're willing to pay. My install cost £400 but I had all the parts, but he says he normally does it cheaper in the winter so you may get it for less. You may find a place nearer you but Keith has done loads of Corrados so really knows what he's doing. Do you still have the compressor/pipework/condensor? Anyway when I have time i'll find out the weight and cost of delivery.

Hi All I Have just joined the forum

I own a 96 storm with a diavia air con system. I have been restoring the car as the last owner let it go a bit. The air con used to work only when the engin fan kicked in to cool the engin. The system then gave up all together. I Have had a new condenser and dryer fitted as the system was leaking but now my Blower (excuse my french) is working at full bore on 4 and only just spinning on 1 and 3, (no real power),and 2 is not working at all.

I looked at the tec data but clearly the diavia fan is not the standard one so I came up blank

My technical knowledge is limited to say the least but on a recent expensive trip to the garage I was told it may be the riostat ????(sp) they tried bridging it and also putting a thermal fuse on it but still no joy. I was supprised it was a fiat part but was also upset to be told that it was no longer made. I'm told the system is now holding its gas but as its not cooling anything this has not helped me much :( I,ve taken the dash out and the blower motor seems fine ( no nasty noises).

But thats as far as I've got.

A kind member has just sent me a "over view wiring diagram" but before i jump in with both feet I was hoping some one may be able to tell me if they had any experiance with these problems and if they had any idea how to fix the Blower and why the air con system was not engaging the engin fan when it was on ??????????

Thanks :)

There are three sensors in the thermostat housing (by the coil) which drive a lot of the cooling logic in the car. The rightmost sensor drives a relay which determines when the clutch kicks in. One way of testing whether the secondary relay works is to press the boost or Max button on your dash. If that fails then you need to trace the circuit in the engine bay (the Diavia relays should be near the fan relay, by the coolant bottle), check the fuses and make sure that each relay responds to its actuation signal appropriately.

That means that your thermistor pack works (mostly). Use a multimeter to test the resistors on the thermistor pack for continuity. If one of them is open circuit, then you need to replace the relevant resistor. More likely is the case that the copper track resting point for speed 3 on your speed control unit is oxidised, or that the contacts for the loom plug in the back of the heater control unit at the dash is oxidised (the copper track gets very hot and can cook the plug and its poly socket. Stick some switch cleaner on it, it might help. Failing that, and as long as you are sure the resistor pack works, then you need to buy a new heater control unit, or get one second had (modified) from a Passat 35i.

Keith in Chertsey, an aircon specialist, found that one of the VW vans had a blower that was almost the right size and would work. MPStorm

You need to look through the forum threads on aircon, and you'll find his number.

Do you live near London? If so, then save up about £200, contact Keith and get these final bits done. Dont forget to source a good second hand heater control unit.

Good luck.

Hi all,

I am looking at getting a vr6, and noticed that air con is quite hard to come by on them.

I've had air con for 2 years and couldnt live without it now, so was wondering how much the diavia air con kits cost and whats the availability like on them?

TIA :)

Dave

Unless someone in the forum has an old one thats running spare, Diavia kits always were as rare as hens teeth. If you know someone who has a Golf III with aircon (RHD), it may be possible to shoehorn that one into a Corrado, I havent done it, but I know it has been done. Some say that a hybrid of Golf IV system has been tried. If Guy still has his 'Rado, he may be able to offer some suggestions.

Whatever you do it takes research. Try Keith at ACE in Chertsey. His number can be found if you search this forum.

Dont try and buy an american or European spec aircon unit and hope it will fit in a RHD drive car. It doesnt.

Good luck.

Diavia kits do come up for sale now and then, in fact bigpants baby had one on here not so long ago, give him a shout as he may still have it and if not has a knack of getting hold of stuff! Remember though that they were not the greatest a/c kit on the planet when they were new and were often badly fitted by the dealers in the first place so might not be in the best health now over a decade later.

Or if you're feeling brave you could go the route I did with c/c, it's a bit more involved but well worth the effort, there's plenty of Golfs and Passats out there with OEM kit in that can be made to fit. Be prepared to use either a fair lump of your own time with the car in pieces installing it, or emptying your pockets to somebody to do the job for you.

Hi,

Just looked at the threads to do with the air con and hope someone can help.

I've got a Diavia set up in my VR6 and the air con only sometimes kicks in. When it's playing up, the revs do not drop after I depress the button. As mentioned in the threads, are the relays the first point of check? Thanks

Guys its easier to fit a Passat sytem in the VR, my VR came with a Diavia sytem as well I basically junk out the entire wiring and cooling coil, a Passat blower/heater unit will fit under the Corrado dash properly and its original, the only downside is that you will need to shorten the glove box to clear the larger cooling coil/Box. This unit is made by Valeo and the fan unit is the same with MK3 Golfs and also Audi A4(B5). So parts are available. The air from this system is far more efficient than the Davia crap, I know as I leave in the tropics. My suggestion go an look for a Passat of MK3 golf VR6, the system will go in fine except the condenser unit might be needed as I am not sure the passat of the MK3 Golf will fit?

Ask if you need further help...

Hi all,

The condensor on the air con of my 95 VR6 has just packed in.

Does anyone know the part number for this?

It is an original Diavia kit.

Thanks....John.

Its a generic part, any decent AC specialist can replace it.

Thanks Storm.

That was a blonde moment, though, I meant compressor, not condensor... :pale:

I'm trying to source the part, but whoever I talk to wants a chassis number as there are two parts on the system.

This is a bit of a problem as I fitted the air con myself using a kit from a donor car...

Thanks,

John.

You'll find that its still a generic part made by Sanden. If you take it out it should have the part number on it.

These guys will know what it is:

Cheers Storm.

Thought I was getting somewhere once I'd fitted it all - now going to have to take it out again...

Wish I'd never started now!!

Just to add to this thread im quite a way through fitting a Diavia kit from a Mk3 Golf Vr6 into my Corrado.

Has turned out to be a bit of a bitch to be honest.

line from the Reciever dryer to to the fan box/evaporator was too short to reach the heater box, only discovered this after i had fitted the condensor and dryer behind the bumper, this in itself was a pain in the arse as i had to move the condensor over to the left as the lower a/c line on the condensor was too tight onto the subframe.

Ive now fitted the dryer underneath the nearside chassis leg near the horns, utilising some of the line legth from the condensor to reciever dryer pine has enabled me to move the dryer closer towards the bulkhead and therefore the line now reaches the fan box/evaporator!

Getting the larger fan box in single handedly was a mission in itself!!

Working in a baking hot garage in the sweltering heat yesterday was another sore point!!
