CLUNKING sound when turning at parking speeds

Mines the same, just got it and previous owner reckoned it was the top mounts. Its been lowered and only makes clunk at low speed and from passenger side. Could it be because theres less weight on passenger side??

Could be. I had new genuine top mounts fitted when the car was lowered, top mounts usually clunk when driving over rough surfaces when they are knackered.

At first i thought it was the lowering springs moving about in the locations, but the 'clunk' feels like its coming from the steering/bottom end..

Well, mine has new suspension bushes all round including top mounts, and it still does it. No other complaints though, it drives very well, so I'm trying to think of it as part of it's charm and character :lol: otherwise I'll drive myself insane and waste hour upon hour underneath the car trying to work it out.

what would be left to try then? Could balljoints make a noise like that? subframe mounts/bushes?

The lower swivel joints are new on mine, too. Only things left are track rod ends, track rod to steering rack joints, steering rack, or possibly the shock absorbers, although the fact it's a common problem and we all probably have different suspension makes me doubt its the shocks.

the problem with mine was that vw fitted smaller diameter spring seats on the top of the front struts for this model year ('95 vr6) but whoever had fitted the koni/eibach kit had fitted the springs for the earlier models so the spring managed to wind itself round the seat and knock against whatever you call the bit of the bodywork in the engine bay where the struts are mounted to. thanks to swifts (sheffield) for identifying the problem in the first place and stealth (you know where they are) for telling me what they needed to do to put it right which was replace the existing top seats with ones for the earlier models. haven't had any problems since so if you've got a '95 vr6 it's definitely worth checking out but if you haven't then it's probably going to be something else. good luck!

Anyone found what causes this problem? mine seems to be getting worse, it has turned into a 'double clunk' when reversing on left lock quickly.

Had similar problems on 2 cars in the past.

 

1st was a Mk2 Ford Escort (RWD) - problem was front road spring turning in it's spring seat, removed & refitted front spring - cured.

 

2nd was my G60 - CV joint problem, replaced all 4 CV joints - cured.

 

 

Problem with lowering FWD cars is that it causes extra stress on the CV joints (both inner & outer). Ideally, the suspension should ba at a height whereby the driveshafts are complely horizontal. The less horizontal the driveshafs, the more strain on the CV joints. When the car is lowered, the driveshafts are effectively lengthened (wheel hub is further from gearbox output shaft) & the extra length is allowed/compensated by the inner CV joint. In an extreme case (if the bumpstops are too short) - the driveshafts will hit the front chassis legs.

 

I replaced all 4 CV joints on my G60 & the problem was cured for approx 25k, then the problem re-occured. Replaced all 4 CV joints again - problem cured again.

Ok so my vr has just started making this noise too :(

 

It's just started. It first happened on braking. Seems to do it on full right lock at parking speeds too.

 

Kind of like a knock but also a bit of metal on metal horrible grinding sound! WTF???

Difficult to diagnose without seeing the car. I wouldn't be surprised if one of your outer CV joints is the cause.

I occasionally get something similar.. when pulling away after being stationary, a light clunk comes up through the car from the front.. thinking its related to some of the above things that The Chairman (hehe) above has said because the car is quite lowered!

randal, Had it removed from my old G60- was making a horrid noise!

 

Had clunking before from the following:

 

CV joint

wheel bearing (garage thought the CV was to blame, but it carried on afterwards. Changed the bearing which was a few months old. They found one of the balls had chipped)

broken front engine mount

I also have the similar clunk. Has been gradually getting louder too. My front wheel bearings need doing, so I might get the top mounts changed at the same time, as it has recently had new ARB drop links, and bottom ball joints.

 

Doesn't seem to affect the handling though.... :?

No. If the downpipe was fractured you'd really know about it and if the rear mount was so far gone as to cause the front pipes to hit something, you'd also know about that aswell in other ways. Besides, it would hit the antiroll bar before anything else and vibrate constantly....not just "clunk clunk" when reversing.......

I KNOW my downpipe is blowing mate - I can hear it and see a previous repair (bodge).

It doesn't vibrate constantly though, so maybe something else?

Hang on kev, just reading your post again...

 

I didn't mean the pipe was hitting on something. I meant if the engine's moving around cos of a broken mount, could that damage the downpipe due to the movement? And could the noise i'm hearing be the mount getting worse?

 

I haven't got a clue - just trying to work it out mate :)

mmm,same here(91 g60).sounding more expensive by the week.

whatever it is,when it breaks,i'll fix it. :lol:

only does it setting off from a standstill though,and only in 1st or reverse...clutch out,clunk.

not in any other gears,or at engine speeds/aggresive gearchanges. :?:

been at vw when it was first starting and they claimed there was nothing amiss(even though i took the guy out and SHOWED him the clunk).

it is however,worse now and un missable really.

i'll report back if i get to the bottom of mine.

i have a very similar clunking sound, except its more like a "click" i can feel it through the pedals and wheel. only when stationary and turning left..???
