Which breakdown service??

Hello All

 

So I keep thinking getting breakdown cover would be good. So whats your experiences/recommendations?? Not looking for anything OTT, maybe the option of upgrading to europe wide (for the Nurbergring trip! :twisted: ).

speak to your insurance....alot of companies will do you a good deal if you buy it through them.

 

Ive had cover for the last couple of years and i dont know why i didnt bother before...it makes long journeys much more pleasant with the peace of mind.

I am with RAC and they have actually been really good so far in terms of how quickly they come out to you. In terms of how well they diagnose a problem, I think it depends more on the individual that comes rather than the company (ie RAC or AA etc), but I think I will stick with RAC for now anyway.

German ADAC, cover you EU-wide for 1 year for €72, yes that's less than £50 a year !! They cover me even though I live in the UK. Get all the usual options like home break down cover (yes, even in the UK), etc. Someone from the AA then turns up if I do break down (which has happened 2x, both with my ex-Polo :lol:).

 

Only requirement: Handy if you can speak German ;-)

ive not wanted diagnosis any of the times ive rang them....just need to get me and the car from A to B.......ive also used them to get my car from my house to my mechanics garage. bloody usefull.

I'm with RAC too, and I abuse them cronic!

 

I always insist on a flatbed truck and not having the car towed.

I've even got them to pick up my car from my house, load it onto a transport truck, and deliver it to G-Werks over 60 miles away! (Without me going with it, either!)

 

I've got it registered as a 'specialist' car, so you get the nicer treatment!

 

(Plus I get it for free, but that's irrelevant ;))

I'm with the RAC and have also (ab)used their services and found them very helpful every time. I'll never do business with the AA again due to them extracting money from my bank account without my permission (long story).

I'm also insured through my insurance company, as for £20 extra a year, when I run out of RAC call-outs I've got a backup :-)

i would go AA. Rac have just been taken over by norwich union, so their call centres are moving to india. The callout process is expected to take longer - was being told last night by friend who'll be made redundant within 6 months.

I'm just looking into which breakdown company to go with (for my girlfriend ) the thing is she travels back and forward's to manchester alot and on the cheaper option's they will only transport the car to a local garage and i don't want that i would prefer it transported to my work is this possible without paying silly money ?

Cheapest I found is GEM assist - only £28 for basic roadside, and 70 for full bells and whistles - give em a go:

I am with RAC and think they are brilliant.

 

Being female the service is outstanding, they check if you are alone and then try to put you to the top of their list, plus they call reguarly to check you are ok, if going to be over an hour before they can get to you.

 

For other Women, a point to note if you do breakdown and are alone and feeling at all concerned. Ring the Police. I did years ago before I had breakdown cover and had broken down on the M40. I managed to sort the Car recovery items out, but during this time, two squad cars came by - to check I was Ok, they even asked if I would like someone to stay with me. Amazing !

I'm with the AA - I get free cover as a perk of my bank account. You know, one of those perks they offer that you think you'll never use.......

 

And then I bought a Corrado :lol:

 

They've been good so far - taken me to a garage further afield than they are sposed to and also towed me from home to a garage, even though technically I've not got that level of cover.

I pay an extra £80 on my insurance (elephant.co.uk) and get relay breakdown cover with home start too.

 

I've only called them once and they seemed to come quickly and were friendly any helpful.

 

I think they just have a list of garages with flatbeds etc and just call them up and ask them to go help you, which also means you get a local mechanic out to help you.

Been with AA for two years and just had an Option 200 renewal note of £90 - i've not had to call them out in two years so thought I should get some sort of discount but apparently not so time to shop around.

 

I popped into Tesco earlier today and they do the same level of breakdown cover (basically through Greenflag) for £79 - and their European breakdown cover is about £10 cheaper too (which i'll need for the Germany trip)

 

Anyone have any other reccomendations?

I'm with the AA, they do a joint cover option, for 2 people living at the same address, its about £20 more than single cover, so saves a lot of cash if you and your partner need cover. Makes sure you get cover that is person specific rather than just car specific, some companies may be cheaper as they only cover 1 car. Person specific covers any car your in, even if your just a passenger so in theory if your on a bus and it breaks down they should come and take you the rest of your journey!

 

Don't go through insurance companies offering cover with a breakdown provider as you pay a premium, e.g Churchill and greenflag (approx £30 more for same cover through Churchill than direct through Greenflag).

i used to use the aa who were great,,,,, especially as i wired in some foglights on their own ring in my old golf and i always fogot to turn them off,,,,,, so they were regularly called out....

And with my company i got Rac cover and they have been really good.... they all seem to be a much of a muchness... it all depends on he driver..... the ones i have had have bent over backwards to help..... with blatant disregard for company policy..... Awesome ;)

I think its going to have to be the RAC looking at the numbers.. £20 cheaper for a years cover AND you build up a no claims discount if you don't call them out.
