Track Days == BAD IDEA!

Recommended Posts

Anyone who was at the Dubsport Rolling Road Day back in Jan 2004 may remember my mate Dave with his modded Silver VTEC Prelude, who snook on the rollers right at the end...

Anyway, Dave's been getting more and more into track days over the past years, culminating in a trip to Spa in Belgium with the Honda Revolutions club last week....

Don't think this is gonna polish out...

http://escort.accelerator.org/images/pr ... d/dead.JPG

Seriously - I'm surprised everyone escaped unscathed....

http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/movi ... _crash.wmv

Apart from the crash and mega spin, Dave nearly wipes out the guy in the Lotus who wiped out first....

Anyway - in typical Dave fashion, he's just sourced another mint prelude, fresh off the boat (so not reg'd in this country yet) ready to reshell his bits from the silver one.....

Ulp.

both of 'em spin out on exactly the same spot on the line. Guess the other guy was lucky he didn't hit it right. :?

Ouch, they both seem to hit the patch of grass on the inside of the track with a rear wheel.

But ouch!!!!

Thats the risk you take with track days

To be honest what your mate is doing is the right thing to do, just rebuild the car into a new shell and get back up and going again

Fecking hell.. talk about lucky. That Prelude hit the wall at some serious speed.

Tis a real shame. The actual day looked amazing - great track, clear skies.. bummer :|

expensive hobby tho' :-)

especially if you come away with a physical injury too :-(

...or if the guy in the lotus had gotten out on the side the Honda hit ...

doesn't bear think about!

At the start of the vid it says "lots of coolant dumped" - I think that's what causes them to spin... there's a portion of the track that looks darker...

Tracks days gotta love 'em.

Know your limits and try to stay near them......

Still waiting on the video to load but if there was coolant on the track surely the marshalls should have been out with the flags, toute de suite...??

At least the metal can be replaced.

I remember the dyno run too. Who is this 'rice boy'? :D

:D He's a mate I used to work with at Marconi in Liverpool - a dyed-in-the-wool Ford man until someone took him over to the dark side....

(hence his http://escort.accelerator.org pages - his long time restoraion of a mk1 1300 Gt Escort - plus the rest of his fleet, XR4i, Cosworth and a smattering of other escorts...)

Blimey, that's not pretty - bit of an occupational hazard if you do track days :(

Glad to hear he's ok and has replaced the metal thouh :)

Holy crap!

The lotus driver must have been watching the prelude spinning at him in slow motion like a startled rabbit in the headlights!

Made me laugh at the end of the vid where you can hear the prelude driver put the hand brake on

The exit of Eau Rouge is a bit dubious to say the least. You enter it at about 90mph going uphill, aim for the inner kerb, hope there is enough track to catch you as the car goes exceptionaly light on the exit... oh and by the way, all you can see is 'sky' rather than where you are going on the entry to it, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Armcoat is about £400 a metre to repair if you hit it.

i didnt realis it was like the ring that if you hit it you pay for it, double ouch, one for the car cost and one for the arco

Apparently the tyre-wall soaked up all the impact, so no paying for the armco - apparently one of the lads on the same trip last year had damaged 2 lengths of armco and a couple of posts and ended up with a £3k bill! And they wouldn´t let him leave before he coughed up!
