chrishill 0 Posted August 13, 2003 Having never driven a corrado before the one i have now i'm not sure how the steering 'should' feel, but to me it doesnt feel like the power steering is working right. The wheel is almost impossible to turn when stationary so parking is a bit of a pain! is that just because the PAS is a fairly early and basic system? In my experience (during a previous job I where I had a lot of different hire cars), things like pedal stiffness, gear changes & PAS systems varied enormously. I seem to remember there was one that had a selectable PAS system, nicknamed the 'girlie button'. It made the steering so featherlight it was really scary to drive with :shock: Also, turning the wheel when stationary is bad, no? I'd think you need a little movement, even if it's just on the clutch... I would say that the Corrado is certainly not as easy to turn as most modern cars I've driven... DtM. biggrim 0 Posted August 13, 2003 Fiat Punto has the girlie button and it makes it proper scary to drive at high speed. Use it to park or risk crashing on the motorway. Corrado is alot easier to steer than my MKII Golf Gti but not as easy as my dads astra. It is a primitive system (car was devised in the 80's) and I'm sure someone said it is progressive but not 100% sure of that. chrishill 0 Posted August 13, 2003 my last car was a new shape astra, and the steering was really light in that, other than that i've driven quite a few cars, but only one without power steering, which was an old Jetta. To be honist the corrados steering feels as heavy as the jettas! Also, turning the wheel when stationary is bad, no? I'd think you need a little movement, even if it's just on the clutch... Scott 0 Posted August 13, 2003 The Corrado steering is indeed progressive - that is it gets heavier as you increase your speed.... If you cannot turn the PAS when stationary then yes I would say you have a problem.... I have driven hundreds of cars and would describe the steering on a Corrado (PAS) as to be heavier than most PAS cars.... but is still relatively easy to steer.... I can use one hand to park, etc.. I assumed that's what you meant, but I had to be sure :wink: Just as an aside, I'm pretty sure that PAS was standard on all models, it was the ABS/Electrics/sunroof that were originally optional extras... Rams 0 Posted August 13, 2003 When you say you cant turn the steering wheel when stationary I hope you are joking. You can turn a non power steering car stationary with a bit of difficultie. Mabe you need to go the gym! Lol. I would say that as long as the car is ideling well and you havent got a power drain anywhere you should be ok. Does the pump make a noise when you steer or is it silent? You should hear it straining and the revs may drop a little when on hard lock trying to get out of a tight space on full lock. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 13, 2003 Agree with Scott. The VW PAS system is one of the best in the industry, especially on the Corrado. It only feels assisted when required and feedback and turn-in are superb. I would hazard a guess at either your serpentine belt slipping or the pump blades are worn. No you shouldn't really turn the steering in large amounts when stationery as the load exerted on the rack and tie-rods is at it's greatest. Just don't do it regularly. Maybe it's stuck permanently in parking mode :lol: I know my rack is worn though, so maybe it will change when I get a recon one fitted? Some chap on the Yahoo list reckons you can adjust a worn rack on the Corrado to take up some slack - anyone know how I can do this? Rams 0 Posted August 14, 2003 You are looking at £100 and something pounds, I got mine from German & Sweedish but if the noise that I have means its a faulty pump I will get a refund and buy one from VW.
