Stan 24v 0 Posted January 6, 2006 Surely its heavier though, its got twice as many valves for a start!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 6, 2006 Yeah but they're smaller and still only two cams driving them.....
24V Renshaw 0 Posted January 6, 2006 plus a plastic inlet manifold rather than a metal one. I think if someone bothered to weigh a 16V lump, a VR6 lump, a G60 lump and a 24v lump there would be next to no difference between them. I am convinced the extra weight between a VR6 and say a G60 is the extra sound proofing, extra equipment, re-inforcing etc.. and not the engine Jay
Johnboy98 0 Posted January 7, 2006 Found these engine weights on VWVortex: VR6 180 Kgs or 396 lbs 24v V6 173 Kg 382 lbs 1.8T 128 Kgs 282 lbs 1.8 16v 120Kgs 265lbs G60? anyone know this 1?

Blimey, the valver is very light compared to the VR! Mine must be pushing 190kg with that heavy old snail on it.

Dutch24V 0 Posted January 9, 2006 Stan, what are you doing about the exhaust? Are you getting a custom made downpipe and keeping the rest VR? What about the lambda sensors - how many are needed? I thought 4? Dutch
24V Renshaw 0 Posted January 9, 2006 You have to make a custom downpipe, neither a VR one or a 24v one will fit. There are 4 lambda sensors, one before each cat, one after each cat. You really want to put the twin cats in too otherwise the sensors will be measuring the wrong mixtures. Jay
Stan 24v 0 Posted January 9, 2006 As Jay said. Custom downpipe and keeping the magnex VR zorst 8)
Dutch24V 0 Posted January 9, 2006 So your adding in another Cat then Stan? Can you ask the person who makes the downpipe for you to make 2 of them please? So between the downpipe and the VR rear section is basically mkiv stuff from VAG then? Cheers, Dutch
24V Renshaw 0 Posted January 9, 2006 No you want to use the twin 4motion cats, they are side by side and they fit in the space no problem. You then get a joiner made up to connect to whatever "cat back" system you use. The downpipe is a complete loch ness monster of a shape. takes ages. Jay
Dutch24V 0 Posted January 9, 2006 OK, thanks Jay. So the downpipe ends with 2 sections then, or is their a joiner between it and the cats? Stan, if you could get your guy to get 2 of these downpipes made maybe they'll be a bit cheaper too? Do you know who's making your's btw? Dutch
PhatVR6 0 Posted January 9, 2006 if you think it's hard getting that dpwnpipe in there, just imagine it with a prop and a big rubber coupling to get past. I spent a week on my downpipe, and I'm still not happy with it.
Stan 24v 0 Posted January 9, 2006 Dutch, Andy Walker is fabricating it himself. I will have a word with him to see if he could make two or more, depending on how viables it is for him to do it. I assume he is adding the twin cats to it for me?? I'll ask to make sure.
Dutch24V 0 Posted January 9, 2006 OK, thanks mate.
Stan 24v 0 Posted January 9, 2006 Phat, you got any pics of your cat and downpipe mate?
Stan 24v 0 Posted January 9, 2006 In answer Dutch, Andy says he hasnt decided which option to go for yet. He reckons it will flow better with the single Cat.
Dutch24V 0 Posted January 10, 2006 Stan, it may flow better but the ECU needs all 4 O2 sensor readings for the fuelling, and like Jay says if you don't fit twin CATS the readings will be off. I'm defo going the twin CAT route and if required there is an exhaust specialist over here that I will get to build the complete system. I can even choose the note I want it too produce too !! I was hoping to get a rough system together first though so I can at least drive the car to them so they can build it to fit perfectly (it's the other side of the country), hence the reason why I was asking about getting a downpipe made. Well, If you go twin CAT and he makes the downpipe for that option and he's willing can you ask him to make 2 then? Cheers, Dutch
rmn 0 Posted January 10, 2006 are you all running the 020 boxes? I was looking at dutchdub's site (dangerous i know  ) and he makes a nice mount for the mk4 box. From what i have seen you need to mod the front engine mount bracket to make it fit round the bigger gearbox casing
24V Renshaw 0 Posted January 10, 2006 Yeah and then make custom driveshafts.... I have used the 02A box just because it fits perfectly factory and if anything breaks you can go down the shop and buy another one, rather than getting it custom made... rmn 0 Posted January 10, 2006 true, but a friend of mine has changed the inner drive cups from a mmk4 gti box (108mm) to those from a mk3 tdi box(100mm) for a 1.8T into a mk2, with this he was able to use standard shafts, so thats what i was thinking might work with the mk4 box in the corrado
