I was thinking about attempting it while my car is off the road and recording it all on slow capture. Don't think I am good enough with a spanner though, i'd just be following the guide and hoping for the best! Not sure if my garage is big enough either.

You may be right there triggermyson, I was toying with doing it at home but then opted for the workshop where I work (lucky). Not impossible at home, but much better to have a bit of room if you can

The Phirm have quoted me between £500-600, including all parts, and new clutch. They are in the south. If you're near the midlands give Stealth Racing a call as they're very good too.

Stealth Racing number is 01926 812259!

Dunno about the Phirm but PVW rave about em.. sure they'd do a good job! Lots of people on here have had the chains redone at Stealth though and are very happy with the work :)

I've been quoted £1400 for chains, tensioners and clutch from a C specialist - is this expensive? Its just all these low figures i'm reading is making me wonder

Oky doky then - i'll do some rethinking then about who does me chain changing. Is Stealth really the place to go - i'm just worried about if any problems arise its a bit of a B to ship a car from Guildford to Stealth.

But from all the comments Stealth sound like they treat their customers well.

If you're near Guildford go to The Phirm mate...Tim in there has over 16 year's experience. They and Stealth are the best around. If you read Performance VW magazine they really rate The Phirm. They are based near Farnham / Haselmere. Not far from you at all. They are an hour from me which is why I chose them. Visit http://www.thephirm.co.uk

I did mine on the driveway, summer weather admittedly. Your guide was excellent.

Vince did mine for £650 + VAT, for new chains, tensioners and clutch. You can be sure they will do a good job and the service is spot on. I called last week for advice on doing my CV joint and I ended up being on the phone for 20 mins while he gave me all the info i needed.

You can bet the average garage would try and get you in to get some cash out of you.

How long did it take you andy?

Hmm difficult one. It was a spare car so I wasn't pushed for time. Took the front of the car off and the head and all ancilliaries in an afternoon. I got the head reconditioned, this took a couple of days as it had 12 new valves and tappets put in. In the mean time I took the gearbox and clutch out, this probably took me half a day, what with disconnecting the driveshafts and stuff. Took an afternoon to put the new clutch and chains on, and then a day to put the gearbox back on, head on etc and have her running perfect again. Really enjoyable job actually, not technically difficult. So about three working days, although I spaced it out over a couple of weeks. I'd do it in two long days now I reckon.
