Rear numberplate surround removal

How can i get the rear number plate surround off ?

 

took the number plate off and most of it seems to be loose, apart from clips holding the bottom of it on?

 

now i dont want to just snap these off so how do you get it off?!!?

There are 4 (IIRC) clips holding the plate surround onto the tailgate (accessible from behind the inner panel) and the whole length of the bottom of the plate trim is bonded on with the strongest double sided tape known to man. I think NASA used it to secure the astronaughts to their seats during lift off.

 

You'll be lucky if you can get it off without cracking it. Try heating the panel with a heat gun to soften the glue and peel it away gently. A new panel costs £25 from VW, which isn't too horrendous, but it's still a cost you want to avoid if poss.

 

Mine cracked at the bottom when I took it off, but I just plastic welded it back together, smoothed and then colour coded.

Yeh it takes quite a bit of force to get it off. When I took mine off I started with the smallest amount of force trying to ease it off, by the end I was leaning right into it and it eventually gave in. Mine didn't crack either.
