ardandy 0 Posted February 7, 2006 Has the VR6 got a V6 engine or not? Top gear said V6 and I thought they were, but now a mates put doubt in my mind as he thought that a V6 engine would have more of a 'V' shape to it. (As in the cylinders I assume). Is it a straight 6 or a V6? Also, whats VR mean while I'm here?
chrishill 0 Posted February 7, 2006 this's been covered before, the VR6 is a narrow angle v6, the 'R' stands for something german which I dont remember! granted the angle of the V is much less than most v6's but it is still an angle, making it a V.
rmn 0 Posted February 7, 2006 its a narrow angle v6, its got 6 cylinders close together that use a one bank block and a single cylinder head Something like 12 degree V configuration engine
ardandy 0 Posted February 7, 2006 Cool, solved an argument here, cheers! Cue post being locked now due to my incompetent searching!
dr_mat 0 Posted February 7, 2006 Reihemotor .. "inline engine". It's a hybrid V/straight six. Narrow angle means they can use a single head, save stacks of space, and still make it short. A 2.9 straight six would be too long to fit under the bonnet, and a normal 90 degree V6 would be too wide. Use the search... :)
dr_mat 0 Posted February 7, 2006 Think it's actually fifteen degrees, but yes.

24V Renshaw 0 Posted February 7, 2006 They call the same basic engine a V6 in the MK4 Golf, wonder why they dropped the R? Jay

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted February 7, 2006 Prolly marketing.... no one ever knew what V 'R' meant anyway, so they dropped the R and it distinguishes old VRs from new along with a red 6, or V, or which ever, can't remember!
NickRStorm 0 Posted February 7, 2006 The 'R' means Reihenmotor, so a rough translation of VR is 'in-line V' - very Germanic!
