If you go to GSF it's the green stuff sold in half litre bottles, the ones I got were branded 'Febi'

Just ask for PS fluid for a 1990 golf 2 if they can't decide what you should put in the corrado.

If you go to Halfords etc, again it's the green stuff, same as Citroen Hydraulic suspension fluid (Castrol LHM is one brand)

Halfords have an application chart on the shelf nr the fluids usually, that covers the golf 2 and corrado 16v.

Your all scaring me again

My G60 PAS chamber is filled with Red??? The car is not on the Rd yet but when it was I had magically disapeering PAS fluid? Its not pooling in the rack gaitors?

Should I flush the system or what? I was told that the red fluid disolves the rack seals? Can it damage the pump?

Sorry ti hijack this post but it does give me the fear?

for the sake of a fiver - flush the system then fill it up with the green stuff - then you'll not have to worry anymore. its easy to do too - just drain from the pipe at the pump end that has a metal turned connector to the pump. think its a 16mm.

cheers dave, so this lhm plus specialist mineral fluid could be the rite stuff, it says on the back for citroen sus,

I've run mine on a mixture of LHM and Febi green fluid fron GSF for years with no problem for pump or rack, 70,000 miles and 10 years, car now has 145,000 on it, still original rack (bit of play) and no leaks, pump relief valve stuck years back so I got a new pump from GSF, but that was on the original VAG fill from the factory, nothing to do with putting green fluid in.

What's the point in this comment? You asked multiple questions, you got a possible answer, that happened to make reasonable sense.

Further reading suggests that the year of car can take either red or green and you should find a marking on the cap of the reservoir (I think) that indicates which type is appropriate for your system. So you'd need to check yours. However, you could have found that out yourself using the search...

i am guessing here andy - but i think red is dictated by ATF being written on the cap - but i really am not entirely sure - a quick search will clarify mate :)

hay cool your boots man.

As ever I'm pleased to have an answer. Yep I will drain the system. It just seemed that some have red fluid some not. I do use the search before posting. It is often difficult to get a definitive answer on forums. I write for em. They are often subjective than objective. You know a little knowledge is often dangerous. As for my comment. Mearly humour. At 35 years old it sounded like my fathers words ringing across the drive when I was a teenager. I was laughing as I read your reply...Write thats me told :D

i'd drain it and get the old out before putting new stuff in - same as any fluid - but nothing stopping you just pouring it straight in without draining...

Well here is an update on this post.

Went to Awesome GTI in South Manchester today for a 4 wheel alignment job. They found my magically disapearing fluid...On their workshop floor!

it freaked them out a bit. They could not find where the trail of fluid had come from. No trail from carpark and non in work shop only at a point where they turned the wheel on full lock to get the car on the ramps.

So I have been loosing a little at every tight corner. It only leaks on full lock..Otherwise non at all. I have been looking for this leak for 5 months!! Its coming from the centre telescopic joint.

They quoted me £247 all in for a new rack draining out the WRONG red fluid and refilling with green. Also said they will redo the alignment for free if I take it to em. Just paid £80 for that :(

Priced a rack at my local shop £195 plus my old 1 in return £100 surcharge  For that price I'll let Awesome do it.

So there ya go my 60 has red fluid in it with the res having a red top. They checked and it should have green mineral stuff running through the pipes.

No red ever ever.

Yeah i have a red top, but i was sure mine needed green fluid being a 1990 16v. Also the red cap doesnt say ATF on it... I need to do mine soon cos my pump is knackered, What is the definitive way of checking what fluid i need? I thought all at this time needed the green fluid?

well being as the guy at Awesome found the leak he checked the car against a database they had?? I was telling him about red caps n black caps  Sounds like a hackers convention haha.

He did agree some red caps do say ATF on em. Mine does not. So it came up on the database that it should have green mineral based fluid sought of stuff the Citroens use. He did say that as far as he knows VW have always used mineral fluid across the range.

You could try calling Awesome?

Mines a 90' valver, I had red and my cap says ATF but i ignored it, flushed it out and changed to the green stuff, seems to be smoother ~ dunno whether it has a lower viscosity or not.

At the time no1 seemed to no much about these stray Cs with ATF on the red cap so i took the safe option and went green
