The Suspension Discussion Thread

Plus axle is part number 190109. The other is 1909093. A quick Google search confirms, and thankfully I have the correct one to fit when I finally get around to it!

Make sure you get the right one as Sean_Jaymo recently got bitten with this, which I believe ultimately caused him to lose faith and sell up.

Also I was told I needed the larger spring top mounts which I have now bought. Think the old ones can be used but not a good fit

It shows in the instructions which type you need, they're kind of ribbed, the older type are flat I believe. I bought some too but turns out mine were correct. Check if you can first, cos they're almost £40 for the pair from TPS! Probably much cheaper if you get non genuine though, which tbh doesn't make a blind bit of difference as they're only a bit of cast metal.

Ok all done.... Now for the after shots. But before I post photos i have to say the drive has been transformed. To me.... This now looks like it should have done out of the factory

 

I suspect it will drop a little more over the next 1k miles or so

As long as it's not too much lower mind as almost perfect for me and make the standard wheels look perfect size

remind me of your shock/spring combo again? they are fixed height aren't they, so would they drop much more?

 

it is so rewarding once new & good suspension is fitted, glad you are enjoying

 

how is the rest of your running gear? rear beam bushes specifically? I found that once I had those replaced as well the feel through the seat was very much more cushioned

Eibach Pro springs and Bilstien B8s - so basically the B12 kit - the mechanic checked out everything while he wa sunder there and said it was in amazing condition - to be honest I have all the old kit back and the shocks despite them being dated as the original ones look in pretty good nick with labels still intact. He did a small amount of rust protection while he was under there and said all he could only find was a few patches of very surface rust which were all treated and then sprayed with stone chip. He has also protected under all the wheel arches

 

It is showing that e low mileage , constantly garaged and mainly used in fair weather has really looked after the car - very happy with that and very happy with the sus[pension and drive

You only get the pro kit for the Corrado but Eibach have some dodgy batches knocking about that means the back sits about 60mm lower instead of the normal 25mm. I've got a set like this that I've spent the last 2 months trying to sort out. Eibach won't be getting anymore of my business based on how poor their customer service has been. But that's a rant for another day.

 

Hmmmmm. I'm thinking I might have ended up with one from a "dodgy batch". I can get one finger between tyre and arch, and I get rubbing with passengers. That doesn't sound right, does it?

Has anyone priced up all four top mounts and rear beam bushes for a VR from the dealer recently? Need to do mine as I failed our national car test on rear imbalance, but the shocks and springs are fine.

I could check old bills but my rear beam bushes were done a fair while ago, as were the top mounts

sounds about right fender

 

& yes IIRC the VR has both front & rear ARB's

Rear top mounts are obsolete now. Can't remember how much individually they were but front top mounts, bearings and top plates cost me around £80 this time last year!

 

Edit: should have read your post properly, you've been in contact with Thursdave so know this already!.

Would I need the top spring plates and the fiddly bits as well, or would I be ok with just the mounts and bearings.?

 

I see Lemforder do a keenly priced "rear suspension repair kit" - http://www.ottocarparts.com/shop/parts/53872-lemforder-repair-kit-suspension-strut-31093-01.html - that includes both upper and lower mounts for the rear. It's not VAG, but you could always use one of the mounts from the kit with the other VAG parts.

This is so strange! What Chuggs1 did I did it the other way. I got a 189 G60 the same color as Chuggs1 in the beginning of the year which had a lowered suspension and thought I would bring it back to normal since it was a bit harsh on my back but also for the car chassis as the inner city roads here in Athens are not at their prime. Well, I thought I would go for new, so I ordered Sachs oil shocks (170129 front, 105769 rear) and Kilen springs (25001 front, 65001 rear) ttl about 430 euros (abt 350 pounds) including installation and alignment, which is reasonable. My G60 before the 'operation' looked exactly as Chuggs1 with the Bilsteins and Eibachs. After the operation my G60 looks exactly like Chuggs1 on the standard suspension, which kind of reminded me of a 4x4 car. The worst came when I drove off the car, total disappointment! The handling went out the window, the rear end feels wobbly (although this could also be due to worn beam bushes which affect the passive rear wheel steering) and in all I lost all confidence I had in the car. It spins a lot easier now and it deters you from driving fast. On the other hand is way more comfortable. Don't know if it is the wrong set up with the new shockw/springs but that's what I was given for closest to stock. When I had my first Corrado back in 1990 the stock handling was excellent from what I recall, not better ofcourse from a lowered suspension, but still very good all around. What also hit the spot with Chuggs1 case it was that the lowered suspension I took out was Bilsteins B8, I don't know about the springs only that they are black. Not to mention that i'm about to put it back on after going to a Bilstein Service shop which happens to be near by to check and restore the condition of the B8s and maybe choose another set of springs. I had my doubts but when I saw the pictures posted by Chuggs1 it all came together, too bad I wasted more than 400 pounds for nothing!
