Usefull INFO for VR6 owners

Recommended Posts

I've just had a good chat with a Guy called Carl from StokeVWspecialists. I was enquiring about getting the tappets and chains done on my new Vr. Very usefull chap....

Quoted me £500.00 for the tappetts - tensioners and chains and replace the clutch with a sachs.... Not bad considering local Vw specialists quoted me £1275.00 (Robbing Bistards)

Anyhow he also said it the Head needs doing he will do that which will include all new seals and doing valves stripping the head right down for an extra £250.00  :)

But the best pointer was, he said that the reason it being tappetty is not down to the lifters!!!!! 9/10 it's the Oil pump which has wore inside. Replacing this normally eliminates the tappetty problem :D

Might just have a go at changing the Pump...

Those prices are more like it! He can't be charging much an hour though as just the chain parts and clutch are over £300 on their own.

Is he suggesting the oil pressure is low, causing the tapping? Failing VR6 pumps isn't that common actually but it's useful info if it's true what he says!

Let us know how you get on ...

No doubt the oil pump is not available on it's own from VW, and you need to have an entire new block.. ;)

Guy said the Oil pump is around an extra 125.00... So can't be bad!!!

I thought the oil pump would be an easy job? A matter of just taking of the sump and the oil pump would be there!!!

I am learning so please educate me if need be!!!

Just out of curiousity... If its not a common problem for the Oil pump to loose pressure hence make the engine tappety.... What would be the other cause???

I've owned 3 vr6's!! This ones worse for tappets but all the rest had a very slight sound too...

Why would that be???? Does it suggest their damaged???

Mine is saounding tapperty lately. The noise isnt constant, it sort of cycles every second or so.....

Definately aint the pump as I put a new vag pump in only 6 months ago. But yes, sump off, and the pump is right there! Easy peasy.

mmmm £500 sounds almost TOO cheap doesn't it?

Not really - I got my chains/clutch/flywheel/suspension/brake disks fitted for about £550 last year :)

I supplied all the parts though

When I still had the old Vr in I had a massive raket at one point, and it was down to the oil pump being blocked, and not enough oil getting to the tappets.

Also, if you add in the WANTED section that you need an oil pump, someone may have one. I actually borrowed one from one of the lads on here.

Carl did my chains and clutch etc. and did a top quality job for a very reasonable price. He's a real VW (vr6 in particular) enthusiast and top bloke. Highly recommended!
