Recommended Posts

Deffo the S3! (id I mention Id sell you mine!)

If you buy the estate the ladies will think your a married family man out playing the field

Mind you the flip side to that is if you do get lucky youve got a big enough boot that means you dont need to use "the field" :)

Jimbo - you sir are a class A dirt bag! I like you're thinking, how much are you after for your S3 and how many miles, any mods etc?

Why thank you indeed sir :)

My Audi is......1999 (V) Audi S3 Quattro, 87000 miles (just run in! :))

Silver Mettalic, Black leather & Light Grey Alcantara Interior, fully loaded with the usual bits'n'bobs e.g rear parking sensors, electric seats, headlight washers, upgraded bose system with amps and sub all hidden in rear panels in boot, later spec tailights, originals availible etc etc

Very good condition (i.e owned by a VW/Audi anorak!)

Drives superb, infact I think better now than when I first picked it up from the dealership!

FSH just had full service including Haldex, timing belts etc etc (£££ouch!) last month also had new water pump and thermostat fitted

Last week 2 new Bridgestone Potenza's front & Tracking, rears v good. New clutch and flywheel last year.

All receipts for work carried out MOT until 03/01/07 Tax Until 31/12/06

Personalised plate Negotiable

Only faults I would say IMHO are a couple of the wheels could probably do with a slight refurb as theyre looking a little tired and there's a minor carpark ding in the rear door. Stone chip wise shes fairly clear and apart from those 2 items I would say she was in tip top condition. 8)

Kev - how many horses does the E55 in pistonheads have?

What do you rekon is cheaper to run out of an E36 M3 or Porsche 968?

Not sure mate, that is definitely not the Supercharged AMG motor. People stick AMG rims and badges on any old merc these days and it p's me off tbh!!

The proper E55 AMG is much newer than 1998 and packs about 450hp with 550lb/ft torque 8)

E36 or 968.....tough call...both old cars and fairly specialist. M3 has the same timing chain issue as the VR IIRC, £2000 job. 3.0 one is the sweetest, very smooth and reasonably quick and doesn't have the bi-vanos issues that the Evo has....plus Evos never make the quoted 321hp anyway, so the 3.0 is the wiser buy.

E36 has nasty nasty steering imo. Vague, over assisted and too many turns lock to lock....plus bus sized steering wheel.

Audi S3....I liked Jedi-Knight's as a car in it's own right, very well spec'd and mint, nice inside etc but I wouldn't want to own one long term, mainly because (and I have driven one or two):-

They look too much like the base models every other female estate agent seems to drive.

Dull, lifeless steering - common to most Audis in fact.

It's a Golf with a different over coat and price tag, so same MK4 dynamic short comings.

But being an Audi, it's built like a tank and will last indefinitely if looked after..... I just think for the money you can do better.

Park an S2000 next to an S3.... which is more alluring and begging for 6 of the best, trousers down?! Not the Audi.....it looks like it's begging to be filled up with kids and shopping instead.

My experiences have been that neally all the girls i know love a man in a golf (and even better if it's a GTi) - (pretty much any cool vw).

 !!!They might just be humoring me though!!!

But i would go for an S3 with a remap, or a MK4 V6 4motion!!!! both nice practical cars, but can also put a smile on you face........

I'm not sure about the S2000 any more - 2 seater isn't really every day enough for me.

The S3 is starting to look like a very good idea and still looks really up to date. The E36 does look a bit old, so does the 968 the more I look at it, the 964 911 looks really cool but possibly a bit old for every day. The R32 is probably the biggest competitor at the moment. What about a TT? with some 18/19" BBS CH's on. BMW E46 330ci is also a possibility and I can still get cheap parts

if the s2000 being a 2 seater is putting you off you can rule out the TT to since it has utterly pointless rear seats, unless all your passengers are going to be midgets that is.

I quite like them otherwise, the r32 engined version with 2-tone paint looks hard as nails in black roof/cream body guise and it suits massive BBS rims perfectly. Only real downside is they have a slightly hairdresser image due to them being bought by people who're too trendy for their own good.

the s4 is great but at 22mpg and a higher insurance group not to mention the fact servicing is a bomb and tuning is doubled due to the 2 turbos etc.... and i would go with the s3

i hear what your saying about the s2000 kev. but being 6'4" it doesnt really work. i found it EXTREMELY cramped inside! plus i got bored of the 9k rpm redline on the brief test drive so i couldnt imagine living with it.

Dont do a TT unless its got the S3 or R32 suspension on it. in standard from (even the later S Line ones) its like a limp salad.

I also thought about a 330ci but there also holding value alot more and the face lift one i want is still above £20k

as for the vague steering of the s3..... personally... having gone from a honda crx Mk2 > Corrado Vr6 > S3.... i didnt notice or indded mind it enough for it to be a problem. the audi had other things (IE the 260bhp available) to keep you entertained so a slightly numb drive was exceptable. Numb or not... its easily the quickest things point to point that i have had so far

Yeah the VTEC motor is the only downside to the S2000 I suppose, although it can be supercharged up to 300hp :-) I just like the look of it and the fact it's RWD!

330cis are nice, but way too common and company caresque.

£15K is only £2,500 shy of a brand new MK5 GTI. Oettinger already have 310hp examples sporting some tasty rims and kits, they look seriously cool imo and the drive is sublime.....they glide over bumps and ruts that would make a Corrado rattle and crash to peices.

Yup mkV GTI is a fantastic piece of kit.

Drove one in the wet a few months back, handles and holds the road like sorted mkII without all the rattles & noise!

Perhaps they'll drop to near £15K come winter time . . .

the only 993 you'll get for £15k is a fake one based on an 80's 911 3.2 carrera

Perhaps a bit optimistic for the budget but how about a Lotus Carlton ;)

Some other choices in that sort of price range (and if I really didn't care about running costs, breakdowns, etc would have to be):

Skyline R34

Impreza P1

Passat 4.0 W8 4Motion (stick with good old VAG!)

S4 Avant

Lotus Elise

BMW M5 (or maybe an M3)

Amazing what few year old mental machines you can buy for the same price as a new Ford Mondeo really! :)

I bought an S3 a month ago as a daily driver. Its not the car i hoped it would be but still can't think of anything better for the money. I really like how its an understated car that only those who know there cars realise its a little bit more exclusive. The TT is the obvious choice but the S3 says your more of a driver than a poser. Has to be black or ming blue.

To drive its really, really numb. Its wollowy and harsh at the same time as the car hasn't been set up for UK roads. The 4x4 is also to biased too the front wheels so it drives like fwd but without being able to feel the grip available as you would in a purely fwd.

On the positive side is an Audi S car which will always be cool and its the 8th slow depreciating car there is. Then theres the party trick, at 80mph on a motorway in 6th a revo'd S3 will easily pull away from a 911 (964) turbo. Don't believe me? Ask MJ (MJ Interiors), he was dropping down gears to try and react and stay with my burst of speed but was already left trailing. Understated...handy when you pass a police car at 95

Got a set of H&R ARB's waiting to go on the S3, hoping they'll turn it into the car it should be!!

of course tho bear in mind the difference in 10+ years of Turbo-development,i would imagine the S3 hasn't got nearly as much lag as a 964 Turbo

I'd take the 800hp MTM bi-motor TT  Evo reckoned it's one of the scariest cars they've driven! But it still has that TT image problem!
