BP's 102 RON petrol

Could not believe my eyes when i pulled up at my local petrol station earlier and saw BP102 Ultimate. It costs.....ready for this? £2.42 a litre! BP's 97 Ultimate costs 98.9p per litre. Obviously the 102 Ultimate lives upto its name in being 102 Octane rating. The lad in the garage said people had travelled a fair distance to fill up, cars he said that had been filling up were Evo's, Cossie's, Scooby's. My girlfriend worked out to fill a 60 litre tank from empty to full of this new 102 Ultimate would cost £145.20p :shock: Any Raddo users gonna try this new fuel?....think the VR6 would benefit as in any performance difference.

When I was working for a rally team, Shell Turbo Rally was £4.10 per litre and our Evos would do 1 mile per litre with anti lag on (stage) and 2 miles per litre with it off (road). A normal weekend would have a one day shakedown and a 1 1/2 day rally so we would expect to use about 200 to 250 litres per car!

 

I ran it in my Golf GTI a few times (never tried it in the Corrado) and yes, you can tell the difference but it's certainly not worth 4 times the price until you're looking for the last few tenths!

octane booster is cheaper , got to admit if it was local i'd have to try some though , about a fivers worth :-)

I just wanted to say.....THAT IS SO COOL!! :D

 

It may sound fun but it's lots of long hours and bad weather! Still loved doing it though, a bit like being paid to do your hobby, I gave it up in the end to go back to engineering, sat at home waiting for the next contract to start I'm never sure if it was a good idea.

i'd love a job like that!! my other halfs stepdad used to be a mechanic too, back in the early 80's, apparently he invented some beam/bar thingy that goes between the back wheels on old ford escorts, and some guy nicked tbe idea off him and got rich from it. as you can tell i dont know much about them, but really cool job. :D

Ive used it a few times in my renault 5 turbo! :)

 

Ran a 11.928 1/4mile with it in my little 1.4 8v :twisted: more for piece of mind as its set up for 23psi and i bumped it up to 26psi at pod! :wink:

I have tried this fuel before.

 

It only worth in G60´s if you want to set your iginition timing up without getting any knocking/pinking specially in summer time.

 

I´ve done it, and honestly and don´t got much impressed with it against 98RON.

 

I guess that 98RON fuel is the one to go for... :)

I thought modern ecu's didn't respond to high octane petrol coz they were preset or summat. Prob talkin out of my hole really. I would have thought it was only beneficial to turbo/supercharged cars where you can advance the timing to run more psi and japanese imports that are set to run on their 100RON juice.

 

Nowt wrong with tesco's 99 RON if you ask me lol!!!

Modern cars don't have a pre-set ignition timing, the timing is advanced until the engine pinks, the knock sensors detect it in milliseconds and back the timing off.

 

Not sure if newer or non-performance cars have a timing advance limit, which would mean using petrol above a certain RON would be pointless?

 

In my standard VR there is a impressive difference when using V-Power, as opposed to standard Unleaded.

Almost all modern cars have a timing advance limit. It's only things like Imprezza turbos have enough timing advance leeway to take real advantage of 100+ octane fuels. Everything else gets their best out of 98 octane and anything else is pointless.

Ok, so the corrado has a knock sensor and can detect the octane level and therefore advance/retard the timing?!?!?!? confused....
