Repair sunroof, problem half way through........now with pic

Ok, ive spent a few days now repairing my sunroof (problems occuring left, right and centre) and ive hit a problem. The new mechanism is in, the sunroof is aligned, and the interior sunroof panel with the headlining fabric is in place, but now it only slides half way back. Before we put the internal panel in we tested it and it moved all the way back, now it doesnt. We took it back out again and from what i can see everything is in place correctly, but only slides half way back. Having got this far i dont really want to put the car back together like this, as it will also be in the back of my mind as another niggly little problem.

 

Can anyone shed some light on what it might be?

The motor is timed to turn a specific amount of times depending on whether you tilt or slide the roof. It sounds like the motor needs setting up before you refit it. You need to operate the motor to find the correct starting position. Play around with the switch with the motor off but connected to power and you'll see what I mean.

Ah cheers, i'll give that a crack 2moz after work and see how i get on. I will admit that we fitted it, it moved half way back, then we took it out and refitted it and it moved a little further back, so i'll have a play it the motor 2moz and see what happens.

my sunroof dont work at all, im going to check the fuse, but ive only just bought it and the bloke said it has never workd since hes ownd it and its not botherd him, thing is i dont want to get it to sort of work and then the seals start to leak, anyone know a rough price for the seals? also worse case sceniero what could the max amount be to repair the roof?

the repair kit is aprox £27 from VW, i bought a full working sunroof for £50. The seal cost me £30 off ebay as my old one was rotten and had sunk into the bodywork, which looks very messy and poured water all over the seats when i washed for the car.

 

Its a pretty involving job though, get ready for some fun!!

my valvers sunroof is broken to!! it will tilt up but wont return down i can see the broken piece but i still use the sunroof and pull it back down with a screwdriver, however ive never slide it back in fear that it wont return. just so i know would it return back even though it wont come back from tilt.

any info much appriciated

Possible, it depends how the guide rails are. The sliding mechanism is made up of various little levers, and if there levers dont line up correctly then it wont work. That was the problem on mine. On each side the levels should overlap each other, so click into place when changing from tilt to slide, mine didnt, hence no slide.

I hate sunroofs. They don't cool you down, the sun beats down on your head, then it shines in your eyes, there's a terrific roar at cruising speeds and they all eventually break and/or leak. And thats if they don't go rusty.

And if you get it just right with car speed/flick strength/wid direction.. you can land the smoking butt in the lap of the nonce in the Merc/Pug/etc CC thingy behind you who's been looking so smug sat on your bumper for the last 5 miles... ;)

Well i managed to break it even more today, doh!! The metal part slides back with the fabric part, the when it slides forwards it leaves the fabric bit behind. I didnt realise this the first time, so i slid the sunroof back again and managed to tear the fabric part, nice!!

 

So ive now taken some pics, for those that have had the joy of doing this before. I have one mechanism, and metal part, and interior fabric part in the car, the bit below is the old one, which is being used for 'experimental' purposes.

 

Now, below i have numbered but the various bit, to make sure it is connected correctly:

 

Arrow 1 - The plastic part of the sunroof is slid all the way into the little notch in the mechanism itself.

 

Arrow 2 - The plastic part of the interior panel is UNDERNEATH this metal part of the mechanism, is this correct?

 

Arrow 3 - This piece of metal is slid into the slot on the plastic interior panel, again, is this correct?

 

If anyone thinks they can help i can email the full size pics to you, if needed. As said though, once his is done i wont be sliding the sunroof anyway in fear of it breaking again, it was mainly done because i needed a new seal, so figured i'd do this anyway. Plus it sounds better when it comes to sale time (even though i can never see me doing that), and it takes something else off the lil list of niggles

All looks correct in the picture.

 

With the roof in the car, the inner panel just slides forward and locks in place.

I am having a similar problem with the cloth part of the sunroof, how did you manage to get both clips underneath the mechanisms simultaneously?

 

I managed to get them both under by becoming ambidextrous with screwdrivers but cannot get it to slide all the way forwards, hence the need for tie wraps at the back of it for fear of it coming loose. However, the fit is so tight in the frame that I cannot realistically get the interior seal around it, I did it once and the motor couldn't pull it forwards, and doing it manually didn't work either.

 

It's all coming back out anyway soon because one of the useless screws has come loose and is doing my head in with its constant rattling. I really wish I never even took the bloody thing out now!

With the roof on full tilt. just push the inner panel forwards until it locks in place. No need for screw-drivers, manual dexterity or profanity.

I got mine in and it all worked fine, i tilted the sunroof, fine, i slid it all the way back, fine. BUT THEN i slid it back forward and it didnt take the interior panel with it :? Then when i tried to slide it back again it pushed the interior panel back before the metal part was in line with it and it tore some of the fabric on the metal strip that runs from one side of the sunroof to the other, not happy!

 

However, i think i know how to fix it. Its just catch 22 at the minute though, i keep getting wet as it leaks due to the rain, but i cant fix it, due to the rain, doh!!

While it has been raining hard (I understand - I've been in the US... :) ) the leak will be the result of either blocked sunroof drains, or the 'liner' not being pushed fully home. The liner is what channels the water into the darins, so it's important that it's present and correct.
