Mave 0 Posted May 24, 2008 Hello everyone. Anyone have any idea on the common problems on F**d Pumas? As far as I've had a quick yonder about it seems there's a timing belt change needed, but at what mileage I've no idea. Yes I know this is a Corrado forum, but I trust you lot! And the Ford Puma forum seems a bit of a mess for me to look at .

Mave 0 Posted May 24, 2008 I think they're.......nice , and so other (non homo) people have said they're good cars!!! Plus insurance wont be crazy :gag:
bcstudent 0 Posted May 24, 2008 A friend of mine has a W-plate 1.7 Puma with about 80k on the clock. It's not that fast, but it's a decent car to drive and I quite like it. She's had it for over a year and it's suffered no problems so far. There are no major common faults that I'm aware of.

Toad 0 Posted May 24, 2008 They are supposed to be good driving cars in fairness. Isn't there a rado vs Puma test in one of the old car mags, or was it just rado Vs Cougar?
Jay2 0 Posted May 24, 2008 If you can find one, there is a Buyers Guide in last months Performance Car magazine, with all the good/bad points and all the mods that can be done. Basically praised it as one of the best handling front wheel drive cars?! Oh, and the 1.7 is the best apparently.
Andy665 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Avoid the 1.4 and 1.6 versions, bog standard Ford engines that aren't great. The standard 1.7 was designed and built by Yamaha and is a great little engine. If your budget can stretch to it a Racing Puma is in a totally different league to the standard Puma but running costs are obviously higher - definite future classic though. A standard spec Puma will outhandle a standard Spec Corrado - chassis balance is superb, if ever a car could comfortably handle more power this is it. Phil K 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Love the racing puma but normal ones are totally ghey as already said...
Toad 0 Posted May 25, 2008 I heard the larger wheels and stiffer suspension on the racing pumas make them pretty uncomfortable on UK roads.
Storm Warning 0 Posted May 25, 2008 They are supposed to be good driving cars in fairness. Isn't there a rado vs Puma test in one of the old car mags, or was it just rado Vs Cougar? There was a Puma in the same Evo Mag group test as the VR6. They said it was ghay and needed Fixing Or Repairing Daily... but serioulsy if I get chance I'll take a look at what they said. If I recall correctly it was eliminated in the first round as was the VR6.. and they said it was great... (for girls)
Mave 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Hmm, the image doesn't bother me! :bonk: Racing Puma would be at a little bit of a stretch but then the insurance would be more and then I'd have no pennies! Thanks for the info and any more would be appreciated :D
gavbs 0 Posted May 25, 2008 In defence of the Puma... I bought one new in 2001 and it was a cracking little driver's car. Traded it in after only nine months to buy a Racing Puma. Now THAT was in a different league - unbelievable handling, wonderful exhaust note, the best Sparco seats in the business etc, etc. I'd have one in my dream garage everytime - enjoyment levels ALMOST on a par with my VX220. If it had more power, it would probably be up there with the likes of the ITR, E30 M3, Escort Cosworth etc as one of the best ever driver's cars. To write the standard Puma off as a girly car does it no justice whatsoever. It is commonly regarded as one of the best FWD cars of all time and the 5 evo stars are a testament to its ability. £1.5k to £2k gets you behind the wheel of a 80k miler R or S plate and that's not a lot of money for a whole lot of fun. For me, 1.7 in silver with the original propellor alloys is the one to have. Memories of the Steve McQueen ad! Try one out - it'll put a smile on your face. Cheers. Sonicriot13 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Lucy had a 1.7 for ages. She loved it. But then she is a girl.... Just kidding. I loved it too. Excellent driver's car. Really good fun in the twisty stuff. I drove it across Wales and it was a blast. Plus didn't AM take one to the Nurburgring when they were designing the Vantage V8? It wasn't the most reliable thing ever though. There was one enigine sensor that kept going, can't remember exactly which but it had to be replaced about 3 times during Lucy's ownership. Oh, and the traction control didn't work. Shame that.... gavbs 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Plus didn't AM take one to the Nurburgring when they were designing the Vantage V8? Yes and I think BMW bought five when they were tweaking the dynamics for the new MINI.
Sonicriot13 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Isn't there a buyer's guide in the latest Top Gear magazine? I think there is.
Ice White Socks 0 Posted May 25, 2008 I run a 1.7 Puma as a daily driver. Bought it because no-one had a bad word to say against it as a drivers car- the image thing took a bit of getting over TBH It truly is a great drivers car- nice revvy engine in 1.7 guise- not much poke but has a nice soundtrack for a 4-pot and some useful low down torque from the Variable Cam Timing. Has a nice handling balance and you can go very fast in the twisties without much drama at all (Just got back from the 'EVO triangle' in North Wales where if did great- even loaded up with GF, MTB and a load of luggage!), Bit suprised at some of the comments really- it is a bit camp- but its also very capable- and 'car' people normally get this- have a look over on PistonHeads- its pretty well thought off there. For the 1.5-2k you can pick these up for then its a no-brainer really. No-ones mentioned it yet- the biggest thing is Rust- esp on rear arches and watch the oil on the 1.7's- they don't like low oil and more go this way than from cambelts snapping. Adz The Rat 0 Posted May 26, 2008 My gf has a 1.4 T reg which she is currently selling to get a Golf. I have driven it loads and it really is great fun, handles beautifully.
Goldie 2 Posted May 26, 2008 I quite like Pumas and have done since they came out, i know it has a girly image but i could live with that and 2 grand for an R plate - anyone want my Mk2 as id quite hapily run one as a daily.. Being Fiesta based means cheap parts and easy maintenance. Got to admit i love Fords, not so much anything thats available now but all special models up to Mk1 Focus RS and all the way back to Mk1 Escorts, Cortinas etc are cool as you like... Sonicriot13 0 Posted May 26, 2008 Yeah, mk1 Escorts are awesome. Let's not forget some of the more american stuff such as Mustangs. How cool are they? And Capris are wicked.
