Are Corrado's the best looking affordable car ever?

Recommended Posts

i agree kev. thats what i thought it wasn't actually designed by the same guy... but rather... had styling cues from the scirocco which was done by the same guy. anyone know for sure?

The Corrado is an awesome looking car imho.

You have the added bonus of there not being that many about, so it always turns peoples heads.

Classic design.. and the fact that it that its design sits comfortably amongst cars that are 15 years younger than the Corrado, its a testament to the VW designers.

I think there was rarely a day went by when I used to lock up my car, start to walk away, turn around and look back at it... top stuff :)

More a testament to fashion, I think. VW's designers were very much the brown cardigan brigade of their time...

Sorry, but I doubt that the Corrado would look comparable if modern cars hadn't become more.. well.. retro..

Everything else has moved back and met the corrado coming the other way...

I reckon that the design team behind the Corrado got it spot on... 8) The looks, proportions and general asthetics of the car are brilliant... There isn't an angle these cars look bad from8)

ibeg to differ they look shit from most angles inside.. dont get me wrong the interiors great but the blind spots are ridiculass

My brother always takes the p*** saying my car looks like a delorean

Well it was designed by the same bloke.

Ah, i seem to remember reading that somewhere -figures

I think standard corrados look way to high and spoil the great body shape. I suggested to my dad about buying a VR6 for himself, but think he was put off by the high stance. He said it didn't look very sporty

Doesn't seem my family like corrados much :(

that doesn't make any sense at all, your saying a Corrado would look dated if all modern cars were styled differently from the way they are today? How do you know what they would look like if they didn't look like they do now?

Quality never goes out of style ...the Corrado will never look dated along with cars like the Lambo Countach ...the 911 ...the Ur Quattro ...even the Beetle

btw Lanny, the Delorean was made just outside Belfast.

I agree, the C is a good looking car, period. Nothing to do with changing times and all that. Some cars are just timeless beauties, irrelevant of conception date....E Type Jaguar, Porsche 911 (disagree with you there Dan), BMW E30 M3 etc etc

What ever the VW engineers were smoking when they designed the C, they should ruddy well roll up some more.....

well just to put mine into the debate lol, i like my C. think it looks great from every angle. loike wallking away at it and glancing over my shoulder, and like the looks it gets too :D, also like the fact that my parents prefer it modified too! they love it, but ,my dad hates to drive it! funnniest thing in the world is watching him get ou it pmsl :D

like the interior. very german and functional. Dont like modern cars and this is on a fine balance for me

Dont really mind peopole calling it a scirocco either, cause ither way its a dub. hell i call mine a Passat Coupe! still looks and goes the same 8)

The Scirocco was designed by the same people that did the MKI Golf, and the Scirrocco was actually designed first. i'd type the name but a i cant spell it ! lol

Not certain who designed the DeLorean but i know its made from Stainless steel

Was looking at CRX's too so aint biased when i say that i think the C is nicer than the CRX. think its coped with age better. and i dont think its a fashion thing either. its always looked more modern than other dubs at any given time (apart from newer ones like MK4's etc... vague point but leave me on it, i know what i mean

Like G60 Dan tho, it just doesnt feel the same as my last car, but also doesnt feel the same as it once did when i bought it... maybe its me :( maybe i just miss it a bit. ill let you know next week!

The Corrado is wicked looking - it really is. I really love the looks - I find myself rather embarrassingly looking at it all the time outside my work - much to the bewilderment of my colleagues. It is a gorgeous car and still blows away newer sportscars but I think that's due to the rarity of seeing Corrado's. it is a thing of beauty and the DeLorean thing cracks me up as I have always thought that my bee-sting should be connected to a Flux capacitor!

The MK2 CRX was a nice design in its time were talking 1987 where you had scirocco, mk3 escorts, nova's etc but i think that design has dated whereas the corrado has matured. But the corrado's had a very wide market model wise, going from 1.8 16v to 2.9 6cyl dont see that range offered in a honda CRX.

Totally agree Kev, I've loved the shape of the C from day one, it's a timeless classic in my opinion. And let's face it, you don't see 'em every day (well not round here!), the admiring comments I get are unbelievable, not bad for a 15 year old shape which should really be an 'old banger' design by now. But never will be :)

Nip over to the calibra forum and ask them what they think !!!

(Has anyone been on there since the Corrado top gear article poked fun at the Calibra???)

To think I actually quite liked them for the first few years they were around  They are looking dated now, and apparently handle like a bag o s*** too, unlike the C!

and the corrado was modeled somewhat after the rocco.

Yeah the styling of the C is similar in some ways to that of the Mk 1 Scirocco, the way the side rear window sweeps up towards the tailgate being a similar design for example.

my 2p peeps! 8)

I used to like the Calibra's looks but not so sure now.

From this 90's clutch of coops, only the C, the Fiat coupe and most of all the Alfa GTV are still looking great!

must admit to having a bit of a liking to the GTV......IMO the only thing that dates it is the rear light treatment

also quite like the mitsubushi FTO too for some bizarre reason :?

as for the C i find it really amazing how for not much more than £1k these days that you can gain entry into a timeless classic

Have to join the self congratulation, but Hey! are we here to do ourselves down?

I think dr_mat has it right. For me it's the understated look that makes the C what it is. Definitely not a hairdresser's car (sorry to raise the MR2 debate again!); it's not "in yer face", but if you need it - it's got it! and what a surprise to the uninitiated.

A little retro perhaps, but then at 49 so am I ( it took me until now to afford one).

Without asking anyone to give out too personal details, does that make me one of the oldest on the forum?

It's Viagra on four wheels. Only one thing to do USE IT!

What I mean is that some of the corrado styling cues have come back into fashion. If that style hadn't come back into fashion, the Corrado would not look so "fresh" a design as it does - it would stick out more as an "old car".

And anyway, the Corrado IS dated. All that orange plastic on the back for the wrap-around lights? That is soooo 1980!! The front end has too much glass too. Those big indicators and fogs in the bumper are very old fashioned.. Go on, admit it!

:)

when the calibra came in production i truely tought it was a superb car wich i had to buy... when i got my drivers license, i bought me a kadett 1.3 (astra mk1 ?) later on i traded that for a kadett 2.0 16v gsi (astra mk1 gt/e ?) then i finally had gathered enough money for the calibra (year 2000) then i came round to see some... and it didn't put me in a big smile anymore.. the only one that gave me pleasure was the 4x4 turbo, which is rather rare and expensive... so i didn't buy a calibra....

what to do next... i thought....

i came round to look for a bmw 328 ci (e36)... superb car, great looks, fine driving.... till i got to see one in a town not far from here... there it was.. the car i wanted... (till i looked next to it)... next to it a old crackled g60 ... menth to be tornado red, but was more pink... but i liked the design so much.. i didn't want the beemer neither...

then the search went on to look for a corrado, silvergrey... found 2... one's engine was damaged, the other one had big body damage... (i just wanted to drive one, not repair one)... kept looking.. found another silver grey one... everything was on it... and again.. next to it..........................

YESSS MY ALPINE WHITE CORRADO G60 :) the big smile was back on, i like colors no one really wants to buy.. but it looks so great on a corrado...

S_DSCF0046.JPG

i still can't tell why i like it so much, but after modifying some things (lowering, sport exhaust, tinted windows, other dash, ice, headlight spoiler, mattig grille etc. etc. etc.) i even like it more and more every day... people bend their necks because of the superb g charger sound, the looks and the quality of the bodywork after 13 years..

Only the Delorean's body panels are made from stainless steel. The chassis has rusted away on most examples found today. There is a guy in america who has maunfactured a stainless steel chassis to buy as an aftermarket part. You can also buy a BRAND NEW delorean from America built to your spec (within reason) with a better engine than the crappy original. The only bummer is that they do not make RHD but can put you in contact with people in the uk who will do a RHD conversion. Costs about $28K then shipping and taxes etc. Did a bit of research as I WILL own one someday.
