saw one on the road this morning, very underwhelmed by it, I liked the Scirocco in the flesh, but the mk6 is deadly dull, do I just hate every new VW when it first comes out or is the mk6 a real dud?

i saw pictures of the new polo the other day and i think that "wears" the new grill style much better than the golf. it was a tarted up one but looked much more purposeful..

The MK6 is a let down looks wise, no doubt about it. The MK5 GTI looked really fresh when it came out - the MK6 GTI just looks like the MK5 GTI with a bit more of a Jimmy Hill chin and a bit of a weight problem!

I am very disappointed by the total unoriginality of VW recently, it seems all they do is design a car then squash it for the polo, make it a little longer for the golf, then lower the roof and the car for the scirocco. Theres no thought process in the design and all the cars look the same to me.

A lot of car makers have employed a family identity. i.e. all the cars they make, big ones, small ones, high performance, diesel etc etc.... they all have the same "corporate" grill and are instantly recognisable as an Audi, or VW, or Skoda, Vauxhall or what ever.

 

I don't think we'll see the diversity within the same marque like we saw in the 80s/90s again.

 

Lambo Murciealago and Gallardo, both owned by Audi, and look very similar.

 

Porsche - Even their off roader looks like a 911, as does the cayman and Boxster.

 

BMWs, all look the same to me now, from the front at least.

 

Audis from the front, is that a TT, S5, R8, A4, A6?!! Can't bloody tell!

Derivative styling is nothing new and crosses brands and makes of cars. For every decade, the manufacturers are striving to get the same drag coefficients, same crash protection, same interior space and then they are designed by a handful of design studios. So no shock they look the same/similar

I thought the Mk5 looked just like a civic/307/focus ie a smaller mpv slopey bonnet shape when it first came out and never gave it a second glance, however many years later and I really like it, although I really rate the mk6, it's a real grower in my opinion. Personal tastes....

 

Brand identity is a big thing at the moment, especially for the VW group, keen to keep their customers going to their correct brand and catering for everyone, I don't really mind it TBH, it ultimately leads to better cars as development costs are kept down per model and therefore more thorough development can be done as a whole. A Mk1 Polo isn't a million miles away from a Mk1 Golf or Mk1 Rocco either is it.

problem is, the mk6 is a facelifted mk5, so the nose and tail were never designed with the overall lines as a whole,

new VW's are usually 'growers' on me, but the mk6 has the ugly safety-legislation raised nose and really bland unimaginative rear lights, could've been so much better, but they always play safe a bit with styling golfs.

Could have been worse, I've just seen a new Skoda Superb :pukeright:

I must be one of the few that like it then. Apparent big step up in interior quality as well. Id certainly buy one although its pretty much the same price as the new Rocco I would buy. Its an Evolution but a good one in my eyes.

you can now order the mk6 gti from the stealers and the configerator is on the VW website, the scirocco is looks a bargain in comparison and its very easy to rack up a £28K-£30K GTI, think we'll be holding on to our last of the line with K04 power for a while having seen those prices, don't VW realise there is a resession :cuckoo:

Can't say that the mk6 is anything nice at all, but the Passat CC is one of the best looking cars money can buy i think - in black. 8) Doesn't look as good online as in the flesh before you post a picture....

I think the MK6 GTI looks OK-ish, it's certainly got potential; with the right styling enhancements. It will be interesting if the UK GTI (or R32) gets the 2.5 five pot turbo.

 

If it does, then really would be no point buying a Golf, you'd be better off with a Focus ST / RS.

I don't mind a corporate identities, but a Golf GTI and Focus ST, with the same power and engine configuration, same options, same overall layout and basic shape? What's the point of having a choice when the choices are like, a Ham sandwich with butter, or a ham sandwich with margarine? Galaxy, or Sharan?

The only thing seperating them is the shape of maker's badge, the cloth used on the seats and colour of the paint. In an age where the canyon in build quality between an Escort and a VW has now been closed up to a small crack, why on earth would anyone pay £5K+ more than a Focus ST, for a GTI? :shrug:

Indeed, and the whole "component sharing" thing reduces tooling costs for new models, plus they test new technologies on the outgoing models rather than developing brand new test mules. It's all about saving costs. It works out well for the aftermarket tuners and tinkerers though because most VAG cars have interchangable parts. An afternoon at a scrap yard rifling through assorted Seats, Golfs, Audis, Skodas etc can save a bundle.

R32 replacement is R20T with the 270ps motor out of the S3, Focus ST/RS or a VW GTI/R i'd take the VW Golf everytime even if the Ford is dynamically superior, after 5 years you'll still have a car and it will still be worth something, the GTI will always be the classless car thats very classy

That's a shame, the 5 pot is a nice motor. Capable of a LOT of power!

 

I liked the fact you could choose between a 2.0T S3 or a V6 R32.... now they'll be the same car, with a different badge. It really does just boil down to which of the two badges you have an affinity to, but imo the R32 looks a bit better than the S3.... plus all Audis are driven by c0cks apparently, so I wouldn't want to be tarred with that brush!

 

I know what you mean about the Golf but I no longer think it deserves it's status. For far too long VW have played their quality and class trump cards, but they are now being surpassed by 'lesser' brands for lesser money.

Have you seen the news in the motoring mags recently (straight from the mouths of Audi bods) that the S4/S5/S6, which recently went from brusing 4.2 litre V6's to supercharged V6's will be dropping further in their next generation to turbocharged 4 cylinder engines?! :(

Realistically there is no market for big V engines at the moment due to the fuel consumption perception. Dont see why as in my experince a relatively high strung turbo 4 pot uses only slightly less fuel than a lazyish V6.

 

Oh and I dont think the R20 is actually getting made either. Its the Gti and thats it.
