Battery Charger

Bit of a ramble coming up. Got me VR6 that only gets used now and again but at least once a week and mainly short trips. So the battery is obviously going to start suffering. I have a small battery charger for my motorbike which is "for up to 1200 cc". I'm guessing that this might not be up to the job for the Corrado?

 

Then again my Dad has always been a great believer in charging his batteries in his cars (all VWs) and his 5 year old Passat estate (14k miles) is on it's 3rd battery.

 

So do I need a bigger charger / maintainer and use it sparingly? Will the charger I've got for the bike do just fine? Do I need to get one of those jump start boosters for when the thing actually won't start . . . . ?

I have an optimate for the bike but I wouldn't use it on the Rad.

 

I got one of these for about £20 from my local auto factors, have charged it once in 6 months and the battery is still fine even though at the moment I only move the car around the drive once or twice a week.

Recently on here Butterfly suggested a battery maintainer. I cannot remember the name of it but she will point you in the direction of one.

Hi Mate, Butterfly's bloke here :lol: if you have access to a power point where the car is parked up you should be getting yourself one of these. my battery is 7 years old and still seems good (ie not had a problem)

Funny isn't it, the missus' 9 year old peugeot just finished off its original factory-fitted battery, which has never been charged off the car, ever, in 9 years. These bleedin VWs eat batteries though.. My VR6 has been through two in five years, and it's constantly going flat.

 

To answer the original question though: there's no reason your bike charger won't be capable of keeping your Corrado's battery "topped up". But don't attempt to use it for deep recharges, it'll probably cook itself!

ring smart charges have a built in trickle charge so you can just leave on all the time . plus they have the option to do a proper charge on a battery

Yeah they are good. I used one for mine when every I leave the car for more than a week. I think it won the Which? award for best battery charger a couple of years ago.

I use the Ctek charger (XS3600) for my corrado and 16v GTI. Been using them for the past 4 years with no problems and the cars always start on the button. They always keep the battery topped up and you can see the charger switching between trickle and maintenance charging (2 LEDs). They also come with a permanent conector to fit to the battery terminals so that you don't have to use crocodile clips. Would highly recommend them.
