Stan 24v 0 Posted January 14, 2011 Anyone ever had one? Im thinking of buying one as a cheapo runaround so prob looking at a 1.6. However, Ive read that they are pretty thirsty. Anyone know much about them?
carrots 1 Posted January 14, 2011 my mate had a 1.6 gti years ago, great car, great around corners and quick 132mph with 5 in it
somersetdub 0 Posted January 14, 2011 I've had a few. The 1.6 isn't too bad on fuel, but obviously it's a 1.6 and it's quite an old engine now so it will never be great, but I reckon they're similar to an 8v Mk2 Golf Gti in terms of performance and mpg. Danny B 0 Posted January 14, 2011 I had a lovely Red 1.6 years ago......absolutely loved it and regret getting rid as it was a minter. Fantastic handling even on standard set up - I had a front strut brace which made the front end so responsive. I still think its one the best looking cars on the road as well - got to love them in white, or very rare sorento green :luvlove: Also got to have the 1.9 alloys, so much nicer than the pepperpot's that come on the 1.6. .....I could go on and on and on........ :geek:
Danny B 0 Posted January 14, 2011 ......oh and to answer your question, I found mine VERY thirsty - but I did have a lead foot in those days !!
somersetdub 0 Posted January 14, 2011 A couple of other things; I compared the performance to the golf, but the golf is torquey and not too revvy, the pug is the opposite. I think if you like cars, a 205 gti wouldn't be great as a cheap runaround because they crave attention and maintenance, much the same as a Corrado does! I was forever chasing rattles and water leaks and other imperfections. Great cars when they're working properly though, especially with an mi16 installed! dubbed_up_daz 0 Posted January 14, 2011 My friends company specialises in them, mainly turboing them but almost any spec engine conversion and he is a huge fan. The 1.6-1.9 debate is a bit like the 8v-16v mk2 golf debate, the 1.6 205 seems revvier and the 1.9 is torquier yadda yadda. Either is a fun car but the 1.9 is a quicker car and comes with better standard suspension and braking equipment an MI 16 or more modern S16 is a good conversion but the 2.0 8v turbo from a 406 or similar is an easy swap promising almost 200hp and a QUICK car(a conversion he has down to hours as opposed to days almost...)or if your really adventurous S16 turbo or supercharger, his last track car was a detuned to 400hp 2.1(diesel crank, forged everything)16v turbo that was good for over 170gps'd mph
Andy665 0 Posted January 14, 2011 Had a couple of them so can give my thoughts. 1.6 is the sweeter but the 1.9 is the better all rounder, rear discs instead of drums, just watch out for the lift off oversteer, many a GTi has gone into the hedgerows backwards. Pretty corrosdion resistant and can be worked on at home. Avoid the last of the line cat equipped 1.9's, power went down from 130 to 115 and felt really strangled. Was looking at them again a couple of months ago and was shocked at the prices - they have doubled in price at least in the last twelve months so losing money is unlikely to be an issue. One last thing, try both PAS and non PAS equipped cars, I found non PAS to be too much like hard work but others prefer the slightly purer feel
shaunVR6 0 Posted January 14, 2011 Had a few of these great little cars as everyone says ...but a bit heavy on fuel for a daily but soooo much fun
somersetdub 0 Posted January 14, 2011 If you could find one now, which is unlikely, the 205xs is good car too. I've had a couple and both were almost as quick as my 1.6s up to around 80mph, better on fuel, tax and insurance too!
coullstar 0 Posted January 14, 2011 I do like them. My mate had a few 1.9's which were quick compared to my 8v Gti. There is a reason there quick though, they are very flimsy. I wouldnt like to have an accident in one.

mic_VR 3 Posted January 14, 2011 I had a 1.9 gti, loved it even though it often tried to kill me... but once you learn how to drive one they are great. Couple of things to watch - sunroofs have an airlock system which can fail and let in water - the oil cooler on the gti is a bit of an after thought and the brackets tend to rust through and then the filter and cooler fall off (bad if you driving along believe me!) - the oil breather pipes tend to crack and let water into the oil system. Gives the appearance of a failed head gasket but is an easy fix. If you get a chance, drive one. They're much like the corrado, full of character and tons of fun. jimpy66 0 Posted January 15, 2011 Yep- says it all. I had two- a white mk1 E666WCS and a miami blue mk2 G808ESJ. What a blast they were to drive. All that piffle about flawed handling- the rear steering bushes helped make the car handle like nothing else on the road- the reason it was so well liked was that no talent whatsover was needed to drive it flat out on winding B roads- it gave you a connection with the road that only Lotus has managed to replicate since. That's a clue- light, light light! Sadly missed. BUT I made the mistake of driving one again recently- like they say- never go back (better in the memory)! Car magazine famously did a test with one against a Lotus Esprit turbo (maybe not the worlds finest supercar) and came up with the same conclusion- ultimately the Lotus was faster, but only with supreme effort and concentration. The 205 on the other hand felt as if it wasn't even trying. I'll be crying next......... :(
duckdown_hoodrat 0 Posted January 15, 2011 A friend of mine had one, just don't let off round a bend......
jimpy66 0 Posted January 15, 2011 They might have been light, but they WERE NOT made of wood- thats a wicked lie

dr_mat 0 Posted January 16, 2011 I drove a non-power assisted 1.9 GTi once. Lots of fun, very very much like driving a go-kart, essentially. From a practical stand-point it was rubbish though. Noisy, small, bumpy as hell, those big wheels in those little arches meant the steering turn angle was very restricted - getting into a lot of parking spaces was a three point turn and brought out many a red face from over extertion .. boost monkey 0 Posted January 16, 2011 surely thr ered face was partly due to the non PAS? Before I got into VWs, I had an anthracite grey 1.6 gti which I gave to Pug Racing in Dorset and they put the XU9J4 in it for me. Never had experience of a standard one.
