Hofmiester 10 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) It's been a busy weekend for me as I started putting it all back together again, probably the 6th time I've said that in the two tears I've owned it! The few blobs of rust were superficial (thank god) a drill as a wire brush tidied things up and then I treated with POR15 before re-applying the rubber under seal. Freshly refurbished rear beam on. For the corners of the rear valance, I used POR15 on the rust patches. Stripping all the under seal away so I could see how far it went. In all cases it looked to be on an edge, that had got nicked and then water had crept under the sealant. On top of the POR15 I used Tiger Seal to create a tough seal in the corners as grit looks to get chucked up there by the rear wheels. Then onto these two bad boys. The Dinitrol is for the cavities, every bolt hole and nook and could find, including the chassis legs got a good dose. Finally once the Tiger seal was dry. I used Tetrosyl stone chip, which is identical to the VW rubberised coating but in black. I blitz over the areas i stripped back with a Shultz gun. Looks wet to start, then dries into a satin finish, rubbery coating. Finally today, I started to waxoyl the under side. Needs a little more and then the tank can go back in. Last job of the day, my handbrake cables looked to be in bad shape, lots of bulges where water had got into them. Put some nice new pagid ones in there, very easy job! GrahamU 6 Posted January 11, 2015 Nice job Can you spray over the Tetrosyl stone chip if you use it on the sills?
Hofmiester 10 Posted January 11, 2015 Nice job Can you spray over the Tetrosyl stone chip if you use it on the sills? Yep, dries just like the OEM stuff and says over paintable on the can
diarmaid16 1 Posted January 12, 2015 Nice work Ron. Probably not a nice job to do but must be very satisfying once done. Can't be easy using axle stands!

Hofmiester 10 Posted April 16, 2015 (edited) Not done many updates lately but I have been making progress :) Goal is to have her on the road for the 1st of May after 6 months of winter restoration. Having sorted the underside, it's now time for the sunroof which packed up last spring. Getting the original out took about an hour which wasn't too bad. Once removed I could see that one of the metal sliding mech parts that slides in the track, had snapped. Cable is fine but the track itself is worn and scored. None of the black coating remains. I'm going to be fitting a very rare seat Toledo mk1 moonroof which I was told is the best fit for the C as the roof profile is almost identical. I paid over the odds for it and didn't see it working so was nervous! Firstly notice that the tracks are spot on, black coating in tact. A good sign. Then I removed the metal roof plate to see how well it matches up. Looks pretty good. Then I spotted a problem, the seal around the mood roof is tatty. I called TPS and discovered that the seal is almost £80! More than the whole roof cost me :( so I decided to try and transfer my metal roof skin over to the moonroof mech but found that they are not compatible. The panel fits fine but the arms for lifting the interior headlining on tilt, are different and so the tilt function wouldn't work properly. Decided to suck it up and buy a new seal which comes tomorrow. Onwards with trial fitting the roof! Firstly, I cleaned the mech with compressed air and then re greased with silicone sunroof grease. Then trial fitted. The moon roof is really heavy, so I removed the glass panel first, lifted the Frame in place, then re-installed the glass and adjusted it to sit flush. It is a bloody good fit, really glad I decided to stick with the moonroof even through the seal was pricey. That's it for now until the seal turns up! Jim Bowen 1 Posted April 16, 2015 Whats the difference between the stone chip and schutz, i bought the schutz, looks like the same can just a different name on it?
Hofmiester 10 Posted April 16, 2015 No it's totally different. Shultz is like wax oil, it never actually sets as it is wax. The stone chip is the same as the VW original coating that's sets to being a tough rubberised finish. It dries like this.
Jim 2 Posted April 16, 2015 Nice work, Ron. That does look an excellent fit!

Ahh that makes total sense now thanks, i best go out and get the stonechip ordered now. Am doing almost the same as you, i have the dinitrol wax, i bought the soft and the hard one. Have used the schutz before and it wasn't as expected.
Hofmiester 10 Posted April 18, 2015 Right then, yesterday the new sunroof seal arrived. It was an absolute biatch to fit. Tight as anything and it took me about an hour. Got some very sore hands from pressing it in. Final result has come out well though and no leaks so far (I dumped a jug of water on it) I also fitted some sticky backed foam to replace the perished foam strips on the head liner, and used some sealant on the sunroof drains to make sure they don't pop off and soak the headliner. Fitted a new Ariel seal. Interior all back together, used a bit of felt here and there to prevent rattles and squeaks. This morning I taxed and insured her, ready to take my son out for a drive (he LOVES this car) All washed and ready for this afternoon

clumpy1 11 Posted April 18, 2015 A little slightly soapy water and rubber mallet I found best way with seal Ron. Looking very smart mate good work
Hairyarse 10 Posted April 18, 2015 Looks great!! Hope you've fixed your rattles with the felt? I need to attend to mine!
Hofmiester 10 Posted April 18, 2015 Every time I remove something I line the mating edges with felt or foam rubber and steadily its rattling less and less as I make my way trough the car. I've got zero rattled coming from the dash or roof area, but still have so thing coming from the passenger side/rear. Sounds like a loose part inside the door cards...,,ah well, I'll figure it out one day!

Hofmiester 10 Posted April 19, 2015 How did the drive with the young un go Ron? It was cracking, we took a cruise up to Morpeth and there was a fair for armed forces day so I took him on a rowing boat, bouncy castles etc and then cruised back. He said "can we take a long drive back?" :) bless him. Car was great, almost gotten all the interior rattles out now too which makes the car so much more enjoyable. Moon roof is great, extra light coming in is quality!
