Wayne2015 10 Posted March 6, 2015 Ah right got you. You won't need much mate. Just get a litre to be on the safe side. Thanks, Sean! Litre of DOT4 it is! :) Off to Motor Factor tomorrow to get some quotes!

Wayne2015 10 Posted March 7, 2015 That should be plenty. I was only pulling your leg before you know. :) Lol I know, Chris ;) But I do want to clean it up myself ... Some research shows a wire wool on a drill is required. But I not into that. Some just clean as much as they can with 1200 wet/dry Then dipped in vinegar Some brake cleaner Then paint. Some say replace the following: 1. Dust seal 2. Piston o-ring 3. Clips - just this I can't find what it is?
Sean_Jaymo 0 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) The clips are the parts which help reduce noise from the pads if I'm thinking right. Those random little metal straps are what I mean. So long as they are not bent, just give them a clean up. It's a shame you couldn't get them to big red in time, for what he charges, you get a fantastic product. Have you managed to remove the piston and check for condition? You need to remove it for replacement of the 2 seals anyway and if you find that they are scored, you could be on a hiding to nowhere. I spent about 50 quid on a new piston and seal kit when I did mine. If you do manage to get the caliper apart completely on your own, then take it to a local engineer shop and see if they can vapour blast it. It won't take long and will come up like new then all you need is a light coat or 2 of what ever colour you want prior to replacement of the seals and you're good to go! You are doing all of the mods that people take a year to do in a few weeks! Edited March 7, 2015 by Sean_Jaymo

Shall I just stick normal front pads/discs for now (gives me time to explore refurbishing the 288mm calipers myself) Decisions choices finances and summer is coming! Arrrgghhhhhhhh! Wayne2015 10 Posted March 7, 2015 Anyone heard of BrakesInt.co.UK ref buying caliper repair kits?
seanl82 23 Posted March 7, 2015 I'd hang fire with any more unecessary purchases Wayne. If your not sure how long you'll keep the car, it just seems like wasted effort. If after the summer you get the bug, then you have the calipers ready to go. The brake upgrade won't add any real world difference to sale price, so I'd suggest you at least wait til it's back on the road and you've got to know the car a little more. Wayne2015 10 Posted March 8, 2015 (edited) OK Last minute decision (as always :))... Will leave my car as stock for now (sort of)... So no big 288mm upgrade Just need to replace stock pads/discs Can someone confirm the following for me (as need to buy asap): 1. Just replacing pads/discs do I need to bleed the brakes (and therefore need to buy a litre of brake fluid just in case)? 2. Fronts are 280mm (with / out ABS ring)??? 3. Rears are 226mm (with / out ABS ring)??? 4 pads (with / out wear indicators)??? Thanks! Edited March 8, 2015 by Wayne2015
delfinis38 1 Posted March 8, 2015 (edited) assuming standard set up.... no abs ring on front disc... its a separate component..... so no need to change. watch the disc thickness when buying they do two thicknesses. you could buy a new abs ring for the rear, its attached to the inner disc.you can buy seperatly for about £10 each or pagid do a disc with them already attached.... no wear indicators required on rear or front if the pads have them just cut them off. seanl82 23 Posted March 8, 2015 No need to top up/bleed brakes if just replacing disks and pads either Wayne.
Wayne2015 10 Posted March 8, 2015 Thanks guys Ok - sorry more clarification sought for meself for BASIC-car-service-4-dummies: 1. DELFINI: Why watch out for front disc thickness? - just buy thin to save money (or thick to last longer)? No? 2. DEFINI: Rear discs ABS rings - can i buy without and re-use existing ABS rings? 3. MYSTIC: I am wary of sites like ECP which on entered reg, still give u so many choices - i just dont like which one to get??? :( 4. SEAN: Thanks! Thanks all :)
davidwort 0 Posted March 8, 2015 With a bit of ingenuity you can prise the abs rings off and use them again, I've done that before with no issue, just make sure they are squeezed together a little before pushing onto the new disk so they fit tightly

Forgot to mention also try your local TPS. I'm sometimes surprised how competitive they are......... sometimes I get a shock! The other thing with TPS, when you give them your reg. no. you know the parts will be spot on.
seanl82 23 Posted March 8, 2015 The benefit of getting from ECP/GSF is that its local and the brake parts you need are likely to be in stock. If they're not the right ones, you can return them for a full refund and get the ones you need. Your best bet is to look what you have on the car at the moment. I went for the larger pad thickness when I last bought a set, and had no issues.
