delfinis38 1 Posted June 21, 2015 (edited) No I'm not talking about Harold bishop... What are your neighbours like with your car antics.. We have really good neighbours. I live on a private road shared by three houses, have a double garage room by the side for two cars and room in front of the garage that I own for another two cars... The neighbours are tolerante with my cars servicing and tinckering. But I'm wondering how far you can push it theses days... Would love to restore a car again ie.. Angle grinder, welder etc... Did this about 20 years ago. Dunno if I'm a bit too conscious these days meaning I'd have to find another place to do it... What do you get up to in your garage or in front of your house, what is exceptable? Edited June 21, 2015 by delfinis38

g0ldf1ng3r 15 Posted June 22, 2015 if your neighbours are already good, & if you get on with them, why not have a chat with them? they may have the view that as long as any noise is not at unsuitable hours then anything goes :)
Jim 2 Posted June 22, 2015 Agreed. If you get on well with them and are on good terms, pop next door and sound them out - tell them what you're planning and maybe you could come to some agreement about the hours you'd be making noise, etc?
mic_VR 3 Posted June 22, 2015 Having recently moved and having a garage I can work in at all hours I've just tried to stop any overly loud noise by about 10pm just to be safe. Don't think my neighbours would have an issue with it anyway but currently I've decided to err on the side of caution. And don't forget that with a little understanding you can find the perfect blend, as Neighbours should be there for one another because that's when good neighbours become good friends.... delfinis38 1 Posted June 22, 2015 Love to restore a early bug again... But I guess the happy medium with limited bodywork issues would be a lancia delta inter...
mic_VR 3 Posted June 22, 2015 My first big project was a 1967 Standard Beetle, and I'd love to do another air-cooled..... but that would mean the Corrado having to go....

I did a 72 cal look nut n bolt rest when I was 16 floor pan off new heater channels etc.... No intention to get rid of my corrado too valuable to me... Would love an early bug, to tinker with. Never trust them, if you're having building work done don't give them a copy of the plans like I did........ It cost me 6 months of delays and 10 months renting a place before the builder left ours and we moved into a **** hole - £10K minimum out of pocket and us skint
Wayne2015 10 Posted June 22, 2015 I would think as long as u stick with the local authority noise pollution policy - then even if your neighbour complains they can't do anything about it. I know several families have kids with full drum kit in the attic - feel for their neighbours - eeek! I have a piano - even then restrict the kids playing on them from 9am - 9pm. All in all it depends where u live (quiet or already a noisy main road or with noisy kids etc) and type of neighbours (elderly, young family or singles who like to party every weekend at 2am) and what is acceptable between everyone (even if the law is on your side - it is nice to all reach a compromise) Imagine the worse when your current neighbour are happy with your angle grinder ....then 1/2 way through the restore new neighbours move in and they complain like mad....then u wonder if your angle grinder have another use!
mic_VR 3 Posted June 22, 2015 Del - Mine would be more down to space. I've only got a single garage and a carport. Not sure I could let poor old Mincy give up the garage he's only just got! I know someone who has a '72 for sale. Good engine but would need a fair amount of bodywork. Dox - Don't scare me! We're having plans drawn up for an extension and our architect has suggested going for some kind of "neighbour permission" rather than full planning as it's only single storey and only adds about 15m2 or so to the existing footprint... Mine wrote letters for his friends from the bowling club who don't even live in the street, others wrote bollocks about the street being used to show busses of local school kids examples of Victorian architecture..... I've never seen a bus drive down here - a narrow cul de sac, they have 2 semis knocked into one with a front porch disguising the fact, a new loft conversion and solar panels FFS. I have copies of all the letters objection, farcical to say the least

I'm hoping that the fact we're renovating the house will mean the neighbours would much rather look at our subtle extension than the current falling down lean-to. Dox 23 Posted June 23, 2015 Wow. Some people clearly have too much time on their hands. Hope you get it sorted mate. I'm hoping that the fact we're renovating the house will mean the neighbours would much rather look at our subtle extension than the current falling down lean-to. Our house was the worst in the street condition wise, bought at auction, the kitchen and bathroom were knocked down as it would have taken longer to repair its list of faults than rebuild it (new roof needed, no damp proof course, frost blown brickwork, bulging walls, painted bricks, windows in the wrong place etc). Its 12 years ago and we speak daily and get on OK, but I'd never trust a neighbour again. If they want to see your plans tell them your copy is with your architect and they can view them by going to the planning dept at the council is my advice to anyone in a similar position. Erallus 10 Posted June 23, 2015 Moving to a new house soon, that has a garage. Hoping to be able to build a bigger one as the current garage is a wood hut thats falling down. Not sure what the neighbours will be like, shall see. Currently stuck in a flat which has a no car maintenance policy. Still do the odd bit of course! Luckily I get along with the curtain twitcher on the estate, so he leaves me alone.

Luckily I get along with the curtain twitcher on the estate, so he leaves me alone. Good on ya mate. Until moving in Feb I lived in the middle of Cambridge with no garage and no drive. So it was working on the car in the road, or driving over to a friends to use their drive. Issue then is it restricts you to only doing jobs you know you can finish within a day. Hoping to attempt some bigger projects now I have space.
easypops 8 Posted June 23, 2015 I just make a point of not making any noise at night, no compressor charging/angle grinding etc and I'm lucky enough that I don't need to leave anything on the street, only 12 separate complaints when I built my garage  but I had followed the rules and there was nothing they could do, only a couple of the complainers left now anyway. Picture from last night, not showing the one in the garage and the 2 out the front
Wullie 1 Posted June 23, 2015 When I first moved into my current house there were mutterings about the car under repair on the driveway. I then changed the wiper blades for one of the neighbours and let it be knon that I was prepared to help with the odd little job. Sudden silence and everybody likes me.
