Replacement Fuel Pump - VR6, 2015 and onwards

Thanks for the info Riot, what I'm asking Bosch, the pump your manufacturing what bar is it, because for a late model VR6 you want a 4 bar.

I just did the replacement on my car this afternoon - original pump was a Pierburg, replaced with a VDO one and matching sender for the fuel gauge.

 

Fairly straightforward - when you get the metal cover off the tank hole, disconnect the loom and run the engine until it dies to empty the lines and then the lock ring can be undone with a large flat and a mallet by tapping it gently counter clockwise. Most of the hose clamps won't be reusable, so make sure you have some replacements handy.

 

The spade connectors for power to the pump itself will swap straight over, they are different sizes for earth and +12V, so you can't mix them up. The sender ones you will need to cut and splice - I made up some short leads with spades on the end and crimped them to the two existing wires - the Pierburg unit has the wires connected inside the sender, so no way of getting them out easily - I don't think it matters which way round they go.

 

Hardest part was mounting the new pump into the lock ring in the tank floor, and then fitting the seal on the white cap - a little bit of petrol helps, and the easiest way was to peel the seal off the cap, fit it to the metal opening and the gently lower the lid into place - if it's not on right the lock ring won't go on properly.

 

Reconnect, run engine and check for leaks with the metal cover still off, if good, stick it back on and job done.

 

It might just be in my head, but the car definitely feels stronger now on a short test drive with the new pump fitted, and seems to run happier overall - I guess the 25 year old original pump was probably pushing on a bit and might not have been keeping a steady flow. Time will tell.

Right just to confirm I spoke to Bosch earlier and I have returned the pump as it is 3 bar even though Euro car parts advertise it a 4 bar.

 

I believe this is the correct pump ? If so anyone know anywhere to get the same one cheaper. ?

Yeah, that's the correct one, identical to the one I fitted yesterday. The cost price over here in Ireland was €185.00, ao I don't think you will get it much cheaper, but worth checking around. Have a look on German eBay with that part number.

 

If you can get the pump body insert on it's own, it's very easy to swap over but I wasn't able to find one.

 

The sender unit on your old one should be a white plastic rectangle with the float arm attached that clips into the body of the swirl pot, you'll need to swap this over.

I've managed to find this but I have used this company before and they have a .co.uk website but take ages to deliver and are in fact based in Germany.

 

Not a bad price for both pump and sender.

 

Im going to see if VDO UK can match their prices as their HQ is located in Birmingham and I can just collect them as they will have to order in from Germany but only two days, also any problems I can just pop them back to them rather then sending back to Germany.

Is it worth getting the sender as well even though I should have the correct one as its a late VR6 1995 model?

That's a good price for the VDO - but worth checking with them directly to see if they can match it. That site also shows some mad cheap ones that are also rated 4 bar and look superficially identical, but not sure about Vemo/John's etc. as brands ;)

Would you get the sender to as must be looking pretty tatty I imagine.

 

VW Heritage are selling a aftermarket JP pump and housing for a whopping £350 and you can get the original pump and sender for under £200 wow.

If your sender is working fine and is the correct late one for the VDO pump body, I would just swap it over - they tend to be pretty clean sitting in petrol all day long. Just be careful when removing it from the old swirl pot, as sometimes the plastic can be brittle and breaks easily. or for peace of mind and at that price I'd get a new one (I had to anyway as mine was a Pierburg) and keep it as a spare or give it to someone else who is upgrading their pump.

The swirl pot is the white plastic part that sits around the actual pump (the body in effect) and locks into the bottom of the tank. The actual pump is just a metal cigar shaped cylinder with an inlet/outlet which is mounted inside the swirl pot. There's a couple of Torx screws on top, if you undo them you can remove the "lid" and take out the pump body.

 

The fuel level sender clips into the side of the swirl pot, and comes off as a separate part.

Ok thanks the pump I have just ordered form these lot comes with the swirl pot.

 

Came to just under £135.00 plus delivery. Will decide whether I should get a sender which can be purchased off ebay .

I would say the above is the cheapest option for the correct OE set up and also much better value then what VW Heritage offer which is not far off double the price and you would not describe JP Group as a market leading automotive manufacturer if you know what I mean.

I went for the VDO pump as it was 4 bar and the Bosch was only 3 bar, it only cost me £135.00 plus delivery , they must of made a price error and they honoured it :dance:

 

I went for pump and sender just because I don't mind changing any part that is over 20 years old and can cross it off the part could easily fail list.

 

Here is the cheapest I could find today.

Thanks. I have pulled a spare VDO pump apart today. The pump sounds a bit sticky. I vale a Pierburg Pump fitted at the moment which is being temperamental. The Pierburg pumps look to be sealed units unlike the VDO ones. It would be good if I could just replace the pump in the VDO unit.

The part number is 1H0906091C. A quick search comes up with quite a few results except the part number ends in a different letter. Any ideas if the last letter makes a difference? Thanks.

Not sure if they still do it but Stealth used to do a kit to just replace the pump, ideal if your swirl pot and fuel sender is still ok

This is what VW Heritage offer JP Group pump + housing but sold out and more expensive then the VDO.

I believe this is the same pump but I would still check it's 4 bar and do a bit of research. You would have to source the sender to but a phone call to JP Group should sort that out , reckon it will be around £110 all in . Do make sure that it is 4 bar , my Bosch was advertised as 4 bar but I called up Bosch and they declared no its a 3 bar we recommend you only use a 4 bar pump.

The thing is though is your a 3 bar pump if its a Peirburg so maybe you should not get a 4 bar .

The Pierburg in the 2.9 ABV VR6 is definitely a 4 bar, as is the VDO fitted to later cars. Pierburg no longer make a 4 bar version, just the 3 bar for the AAA 2.8 engine - maybe they were discontinued early on in the VRs life, and this why VW switched to using VDO units?
