Black magic returns home

Recommended Posts

Sounds very good, my chains have been done last year by the previous owner but the only history of a head gasket that I have with the car receipts was back in 2006, I think the engine block could be the only big thing that could could bite me on the arse one day. Have you done the transmission oil, that was a huge difference on my notchy gear changes I used Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90 Manual Transmission Fluid - 2 Litre

Yes the exhaust is well nice , for a catback for £500 that is not bad really as some other motors your looking at at 1K, you could always go for a jetex which is a bit cheaper. One thing I have noticed with the Milltek is the tail pipe has gone that gold colour within a week which has surprised me.

I know in the states techtroincs have incorporated some Borla parts in theirs , I so highly rate Borla exhausts above and beyond Milltek. They use the highest quality 304 grade stainless steel. Not sure if these fit right hookers but VW Heritage should bloody get a batch over if they do !

Did you go for resonated or non-res? I am really tempted to just get it done. I've listened to a sound clip of the non-res Milltek on youtube and it sounds great.

The bottom end is pretty strong on these, fingers crossed you'll be just fine. I'm unsure whether my head has been off but do have a small oil leak from the headgasket at the rear of the engine (under mainfold) that can't be traced back to the rocker so maybe it has been done (badly) or is needed. I shall find out in June!

It must be nice to have something to drive that's now known to be in fine health.

It is great it's like driving a modern car knowing that it will just have a thing or two that come up needing to get replaced and of course reliability for long journeys. I went for the resonated just in case the none res had a horrible drone at certain speeds when cruising.

Great effort Keyo. I was at Stealth last week booking my car in for a similar refresh and took the opportunity to have a quick look at yours on the ramp. You must be well pleased as it looks fantastic.

Thanks Jon your not to far away from me. I'am well chuffed. The good news is as well I think I may well have found an old skool body specialist who is skilled and can cut out metal. My neighbour at my works yard is a land rover defender specialist that takes them back to the chassis and rebuilds them and he recommended him for body work. Not getting anyone excited but this guy actually can make body panels in his lock up a bloody legend ha. I'll keep everyone updated on his work and the conclusion . He is based in Nuneaton and well known in the classic Jaguar community and a fair price.

Beautiful car - a lot of effort and hard earned cash must have gone into that.

It must have been nice to be able to do most of it in more or less one go - I usually just get the chance of doing one or two big jobs a year, apart from normal maintenance, and provided there are no Corrado emergencies.

Also the alum key bolt set that VW International advertise for the VR6 Corrado sump are to long and luckily my mechanic noticed this and could of threaded the housing for the sump which would of been a nighmare Ive got to send them back !

Just so you're aware Keyo, early VR6s came with a fibre sump gasket so needed shorter Allen bolts. The late ones came with a thicker rubber gasket so needed the longer bolts which are probably the ones they sent you.

Well done with the work you've done, cracking effort in such a short space of time!

There are a few on here that have the Borla exhaust from who you mention and they rave about it. I've got a jetex non resonated and I think it's absolutely perfect. As long as it's fitted well, the vast majority will be good though

Thanks Fen ,

It did cost a pretty penny buying all the parts and then getting them fitted. I've actually just put my R129 up for sale because of a few reasons. I have more fun in the Rado, need at least one modern car with the new emissions charge coming into Birmingham in the next year or so, bit stressful looking after two classics. Think I'm going to replace the R129 with a MK7 golf GTI not sure yet but will take a while to sell the Merc as it's in mint condition and asking good money for it.

Still not yet finished the Rado to be honest its going in to the body shop for paint correction and hinges, sort out the MFA as the last digit only displays half sometimes, new fuel pump and housing, and finally refurbished injectors.

P.s

Warning thinking of refurbishing injectors, ring Stealth as he mentioned to me that some people had them done at a certain place and I think the ends of them are wrong and have caused damage to the cars somehow, I cant remember the proper terminology he used.

Thanks Sean much appreciated.

The sump bolt set VW International sent out are not the original set either for the late rado they are even longer then my original ones and are a superseded part number all together, they might be fine to use but my mechanic didn't want to risk it so used my old ones again.

Sure jetex and Milltek the main choice in the UK but I would of chose the Borla if available in the UK they use quality grade 304 .

Wise mechanic there mate. The ones that go up into the lower chain cover could have been too long and either prevented a seal, or worse still stripped the threads as it's aluminium.

Finally got a few things together for my car that I have been after for a while. I know AMOS gets a lot of bad hype on here and deserving so. However I called him today and said I was popping down. So he has 5 or six cars just sitting there and a upstairs full of parts, I managed to get the following.

Rear tailgate seal which is now obsolete was £100 and something new

Rear push rod buffer which is now obsolete £30 something on ebay for a small plastic grommet !!!!!

Rear tailgate upper trim panel obsolete but was a £100 and something.

All for £40 notes so my advice is do use him but you need to call to find out his there which he usually is and just pop down there and get stuck in.

Also an update on other things going on.

My MFA last digit is not displaying correctly and I was going to hang on for god knows how long in till a second hand one that may only last a few months as they are all going to fail at some stage. Heard of people sending them off to get them fixed but with no joy and a lot of aggro. So to my amazement VW classics still do the whole board with MFA and everything, it cost £188 + Vat but think how many things can go wrong on that board with warning lights etc . Only a few years back or so they were retailing in £580 range so it's less then half price so I took the hit and got a new one, just wondering if it will effect my mileage reading anyone ?

Number 3 on the diagram part number 535919042AH , there are different variations this is for a Corrado VR6 from chassis F 50-P-000 001

Also received my VDO 4 bar fuel pump from these guys within a week from Germany, its nearly £70 cheaper then anywhere else I could find.

Few updates folks.

Giving the VOO DOO queen a bit of attention today. She is back on her Speed lines because I have sent the BBS RS771 split rims off to be sprayed silver, I purchased them second hand off ebay in dark grey and I prefer the stock silver with a polished rim. I must say the Speed lines show off the red brake calipers very well I might well keep them on. I do like the stock wheels.

Got a lovely red VR6 front grill decal off Rembrandt too match the red calipers , totally recommend this guy!!

Looking superb Keyo. I’ve bought the cup holder too!

I think the new colour combo on the refurb’d wheels will looks great. Love the speedlines for ease of cleaning though!!

If things don’t go too mad at Stealth I’m hoping to stretch to the exhaust.

Golf is looking good in the background 👌

Thanks P,

That is a huge bonus with the speedlines, so quick to clean and they do sit so well on the car with the deep tyres. Yes well worth getting a new exhaust system chap is the old one is tatty, they are good value compared to other catbacks on the market, I would consider the CAT + gasket to as they are only £65,00 and really good quality, also is your 02 sensor OK ?

I know its more to stretch but if you can get a manifold gasket, cat + gasket+ O2 sensor , your all the way from the engine block to the rear tip, you've refurbished that whole area, the down pipes tend to be pretty robust so I just kept mine. Labour would not cost much more with Vince.

Ill get some pics of the golf and rado together soon the headline will be something like Happy and the grumpy hooligan.

Popped down Amos in Derbyshire this week . My car did not come with the original inlet manifold and although I have a Shrick it's good to have the original to go with the car.

I was very happy to stumble across this , the last owner did a nice polish and black combo, reasonably priced and Amos fitted a obsolete top door card trim that he also sold me. He also has the engine covers and trims for sale.
