M15 VW 0 Posted August 21, 2004 Hi Guys and Gals I am having trouble distinguising between first, third and reverse. I go to put it in first and i get third and reverse is rare as an orange storm!! :lol: Has anyone got any idea how to fix this. Banana Man 0 Posted August 21, 2004 It sounds like you need to adjust the cables at the gearbox end Its a case of having a play undoing the adjustment nuts and moving the cable slightly. this may work better with 2 people 1 inside the car putting it into gear and the other adjusting it. Im getting my cables done at a garage this week i will let you know if this cures it and watch them to see what kind of a job it is and let you know sorry i cant be any more help. Mike Edwards 0 Posted August 21, 2004 The cables end up out of adjustment because the engine and gearbox mounts are shot. It sounds like you need to adjust the mounting of the cable on the gearbox that's furthest from the inner wing. Henny 0 Posted August 22, 2004 Deffo adjustment... something mine desperately needs having done! :oops: I get similar problems on my G60... It's soooo simple to fix, but you really need the correct tool to set it all up which I don't have... :( All you need to do is remove the counterweight, undo 2 13mm nuts, stick on the setting tool and tighten the nuts.... it's that simple.... but if you don't have the tool it's a real pain in the ass to get it set properly... :| If ANYONE can get hold of one of these tools for a few days, I can get it copied and then sell the copies to forum members at a GOOD price... lemme know! ;) :D Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

daves16v 1 Posted September 24, 2004 I had this problem. My problem turned out to be a 13mm nut on the kinkage had come loose. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 24, 2004 Also check the 2 alignment holes on the gear lever plate. They should line up with the holes in the floor. Another common one is a worn a missing circlip on the lever or excessive wear in this area. I've yet to see severly worn components at the box end. Someone might have had a play with the cables in the past. Oh and the box mount is a classic. Bin the cr@p viscose damped junk and fit a diesel rubber one from a MK2. craigowl 0 Posted September 25, 2004 I was almost stuck miles from home when I couldnt get reverse, 1st and another one. The fault was a broken plastic linkage bit under the bonnet, to the right of the engine down near the clutch. The AA man - a former VW mechanic - went to it straight away and fixed it temporarily with a plastic tie and superglue. The part had probably become brittle due to heat as do many such plasticky components on the Corrado and was just about to snap completely, being held by a mere thread of plastic. The part number is 1J0711256 - it is called a "carrier" and cost only £7.33 plus VAT. It is a white plastic part in the otherwise metal rods of the linkage. In view of my problem, I would recommend that anyone with a VR6 of similar or older vintage than mine (1995 "M") to check or replace this flimsy part. Frankly, I thought the gearbox's number was up and was relieved to have it all fixed for about £60 including labour, by VW. I trust this may save one or two C owners a bit of hassle and grief.
