  1. Still, I guess I got a week of ownership before something broke. :D The ignition switch just played a blinder 30 miles from home, and I've just driven back from Hull with my righ hand jammed in the wiring behind the ignition barrel to keep it from cutting out (which is a twist on straight failure I must admit). Worst thing was I was low on petrol, but didn't want to stop in case my luck ran out, so 56mph most of the way. On the positive side of things, I did just avereage 34mpg :D Top tip? Always keep a length of wire long enough to run from the positive terminal of the battery to the starter motor in the glove compartment! Cheers, T
  2. I'll second that, and you might see EVO doing some road testing on the way to the B660 (another fantastic road Ramsey St. Mary's to Bedford). T
  3. Bought it [Cheers Edmonzo, H8RRA etc.], drove it home, ordered 2 new tyres, contemplated 288mm brake upgrade. :D Oh the noise.... :D
  4. Going between York & Harrogate? Ignore the A59, but take any or the back roads between York & Wetherby & cut across (B1224 IIRC). Superb drive and I swear that after today's nonsense traffic jam, I'm never going on the A59 again! Going between York & South Leeds? Fulford then right onto the B1222 towards Cawood, turn right at Cawood, towards Ulleskelf, left onto the A162 then right to the B1217. Much more entertaining than the A64. Cheers, Tom
  5. I'll second that. The orang outang manouver works every time without touching the bolster.
  6. Jim, From your other post: I had to go through a bit of a flooded road last night and it went over the wheels and caused the hot brakes to steam like fury... quite disconcerting to hear the water swooshing around the doors as you soldier through carefully! I'd suggest your disks may be warped. Check with a gauge and if so, get yourself a Bionic Grip from Think Geek and a set of welding gloves to get a really good grip on the stupid allen bolts & go to it! Good luck, Tom
  7. Stick with it, niggles are sent to try us. At least the Corrados don't suffer with a self severing rear wiring loom... My last Corrado ate relays as well, I ended up always carrying a spare for the loom (and eventually giving in and buying a new one from Gavin). How loud are the brakes? Really loud all the time, or just intermittent? Chin up! Tom
  8. Well the balance weight on the off-side half shaft is held on with Mastic. I wasn't going to shell out £65 for a replacement and then spend all day fitting it and it's got through 2 MOTs so far. Speaking of which, the brake balance adjuster was rusty and broken (the one that adds bias to the rear brakes when there's extra weight in the boot) so it has removed and the pipes run straight from front to back. No problems so far when loaded under heavy braking.... Lots of stuff involving gaffer tape for little things like checking leaks on boost pipes on the Audi. The last Corrado was largely held together with cable ties (or so it seemed). Nothing too major really :-)
  9. I must disagree with the comments on the interior (although the rest is very sensible advice). When I was in a crash at about 50mph which involved the Corrado going upside down and rolling down the road, I both the driver and I came away with no whiplash and minimal bruising. The seats and their belts did an excellent job in restraining us both. Not sure if the Golf would come out as well (but then the diesel lump would steamroller everything in its path out of the way)!
  10. A wise choice, better the devil (or in this case the car with the history) you know.
  11. Actually, that's one thing the government has done to favour the motorist. You can now make up to 20,000 litres of vegi-diesel for personal use and not pay tax on it. Unfortunately if you buy it from a supplier, then you still have to pay a duty of 28-odd p/litre (20 off the regular tax). Currently 79.9p/litre in York. /Bio-diesel geekery.
  12. You sometimes wonder what the point of a thousand pound campaign telling people not to 'Run The Risk' is, when there are morons like this on the loose.
  13. Corradude, Herisites? :-)
  14. lottysvdub, can you get me the VW part number? My local VW specialist has a supplier that might be able to help. Tom
  15. I like my GTD :-) Nowhere near as fun as a 'rado but cheaper & runs on veg oil & gets 450-ish miles to the tank. There was a late model with PAS & a tacho on eBay for £250 the other day.
  16. My guess would be rarity value, price, weight and the lack of rear wheel drive (in no particular order). There are a lot more Mk2 Gtis available with the same bhp as a valver, better power to weight, cheaper to tune up (and fix if it gets dented) because there are more companies offering bits). Cheers, Tom
  17. Another vote in favour of the Mk2 here (suprise :-) ), for a number of reasons. Aesthestics played a large part in my choice in that I simply don't like the look of the Mk3 as much. The build quality may well be better in the Mk3, but it never really had the same edge in terms of perfomance & handling as the Mk2. I like the way EVO sum up the Mk2 16v; 5 Stars. + Quite simply the best Golf GTi ever - We'd be splitting hairs. :-) P.S The GTD's no slouch either 8)
  18. Good buy! I bought my first 'rado from eBay sight unseen & it was a beaut (until my friend rolled it down a hill...) Good luck with it, Tom
  19. Well, for a good Le Mans road trip, you can see the link in my sig... A funny story going back a few years to when I had the 1.6 TD Passat estate though, is related to one on here. I was coming up the M1 about 8am on a Sunday morning, and not hanging about as I had to get to a Rememberance Sunday service. I overtook an old & tired looking BMW that took affront to a diesel dub cruising past & floored it. He slowly crept up alongside me (as I was back in the middle lane) revving the nuts off the BMW & givving me sh1teye. Thene there was a bang, he dropped back, and the last I saw was him coasting over to the hard shoulder with his hazard on & smoke billowing out behind him :-) With the same car, I goaded a Z3 into a GATSO camera on the A1. He was sat up my arse, and so booted it, overtook the person in the nearside lane, slowed down to 70 & then pulled in. The floored it past me right into the waiting lense of the camera! Laugh? Oh yes. Coming into York on the A1079 there's a dual carriageway on the roundabout and both lanes go to York. I had seen a caravan pull through the lights in the right hand lane and then they changed back to red & I came to a stop in the left. Another underpowered BMW pulled up in the right & started revving, so I thought I'd have fun & started taking the mick revving my mighty diesel for all it was worth. We pulled off from the lights only for him to turn the corner of the roundabout and perform an emergency stop to avoid shunting the caravan while I sailed past on the left through the now green lights p1ssing myself with laughter. PhatVR6 will know the roundabout I mean :-) Hope that entertains... Tom
  20. My folks always had dubs, and my first car was a GT Beetle, so that was a good start! I'm currently throwing money at the GTD to get it back into good nick, when the sensible thing to do would be to buy a newer car, so in that sense I'm a dubber. However, I'm not interested in anything post-96 that VW have produced, and I appreciate some cars producted by other marques (Alfas, 205 Gtis etc.) I must admit to having my fingers burned like Riley in terms of things going wrong, and that' put me off Corrados to some extent, however, in perspective, I think that mine was just a 16year old car, and things just decided to go wrong when I owned it!
  21. Jonny_L, that makes two of us, as I'm looking at GTV V6s with a lustful eye... It's going to boil down to an Alfa or a Rado when I replace the Golf. If you do a bit of hunting around, there are a couple of good fourms populated by Alfisti, but Pistonheads is probably the best place to start. The golden rule seems to be don't buy anything without a FULL Alfa SH, and the receipts to back it up. Oh, and much like buying a 'rado, budget for the parts as well (although I think they're more expensive) Good luck with the hunt if you decide to go Italian! Tom
  22. Aye a definate limp job. If there's water in your oil, it's probably going the other way as well, and your expansion tank will be full of sludge. Top it up & take it easy. Might be an idea (of you have the appropriate level of cover) to 'break down' after 3 miles though...
  23. Good luck in your search man, hang on in there....
  24. The guy's a loon...but I respect his engineering efforts!
  25. Hell, if you can get it for £500 then bag it! A replacement set of clocks & a moonroof would make you a profit if nothing else...
