  1. I really must get my ass in gear and have a run up to your place to have a good look around your motor. It's certainly shaping up nicely.

Spoke to the guy who does the welding on Friday, just to get some ideas of how the short runner manifold could be a folded construction rather than all welded. They should look much better this time around with nice 20mm rads on the corners, may go bigger to go with the smooth look your going for?

  2. M m m m meltdown!

I never managed to get 440cc injectors to work properly, the ecu kept throwing a fault code and would then run on TPS / engine speed and really really rich at idle (or limp mode). I reckon 9-10 psi would be OK with the 360's but any more and you'll need standalone or maybe a C2 map? The standard mapping has way to much timing for anything above that level and you hit the knock sensor max retard limit, then exhibit A (see above). Don't know anybody who runs C2 code yet though.

Great pics though James, if a little costly to produce....

  3. my AR gauge was normal at the time, but i did have a full throttle issue that i was still sorting out  and im still using stock managment and a little crazydave filter, but this is my weak point, think its about time to get standalone..

It was just a quick fix for 8psi to 'get you going' but the proper filter still ain't done.

Mmm, did wonder how the standard MAF and mapping would cope with 12psi. But I guess 12psi on a 140k engine isn't a very nice thing to do....poor VR :) Think you just wanted a new engine anyway eh James?

My main reason for sticking at 8psi is the knock on effect of everything else above that level. Guess you'll be heading for more than 12psi when you get it all back together with a standalone?

  4. No messing about then Shaun!

Think you'll be very happy with a turbo. So a few questions....

How much boost are you going to run?

Are JKM setting up boost control through the Emerald?

    Going sequential injection?

How big is the grin going to be :D

  5. Funny old game this.... have a car but don't drive it. Went right against the grain for me, but I did it. The choice of second motor wasn't exactly what I had in mind but it just happened that way. Nice, fairly tidy and totally original 1.8 16v Corrado 1990, MOT had run out, no tax, bargain at £500. Just needed engine mounts and the handbrake cables stuck a bit.

Put it in for a test to find out what needed doing.... and it passed!!!

Love driving the old gal, fully standard and most things still work. The speedo shows 142k but it sticks every now and again (old analog type) so I suspect its got a lot more miles than it lets on. Starts great, K-jet is smooth as silk. Must check the gearbox oil and cables, cos thats a bit sticky now and again.

The VR comes out to play at weekends etc, and the valver gets all the dents, dings and knocks that are a part of daily driving and also gets left for weeks on end at my work while I'm out in pool cars (was never very happy about leaving the VR overnight at work, far too quiet and open for anybody to turn up and have a go). The piece of mind is priceless.

  6. Check the rubber conduit between the door and the bodyshell. If the boot has come adrift the wires might be rubbing on the bodywork and shorting out.

My car had this very fault and it was the drivers door boot had fallen out and the loom had rubbed through. Insultated the wires with some tape and refitted the boot, no more problems since.

  7. Sampled VRT power in the Green one today...

It's certainly a credit to you Dave, drives really well and sounds like something from a mad max film

Cheers Gary, glad you enjoyed it. I did some rough calcs of power to weight and I reckon your VR MK2 is 195ish hp / tonne, and my C is 210hp/tonne. So not a lot in it and with your lower final drive  Corrados are just sooooo heavy.

Looking forward to seeing how Steve's VRT Mk2 performs!!!!!

Oh and I think the Rubbadubz meet is a week on Wednesday (21st May).

  8. Excellent choice! The perfect choice, so quiet and refined just as a Corrado should be :)

Nice low mileage too, bet the cams haven't even got any wear marks on them yet.

I'll resist the temptation to recommend a pair of baby turbos stashed down the back....opps I just did! Only kidding :D

    OEM ECU or Standalone?

  9. That's correct, when on boost. But off boost and at low engine speeds the reduction in length of the runners will cause a drop in bottom end torque. The shorty may actually hit another resonant point much higher up the rev range

Most people notice the drop in torque between the two types of 16v runners. Most opt for the large diameter runners and the small increase in top end power that this creates. But I've stayed with the small diameter runners to maximise bottom end (I've actually got the large manifold in the garage), cos I'm lazy and don't like thrashing the poor old gal :)

  10. The main benefit is shorter pipework for turbo applications. Gives a better response when coming back on the throttle. The downside is the loss of the tuned pipe length which is designed to boost torque at some part of the rev range, or several parts if you have a variable manifold design (like a Schrick).

You may see a slightly better repsonse when opening the throttle as you'll have less pipework to fill and it may also reduce the pipe runs to / from your cooler, so that would help.

But be prepared to loose some bottom end torque, especially if you have the smaller (42mm?) manifold on already.

  11. Looks alright mate, colour is pretty cool too.

It's not like the corrado is known for it's amazing reliability, is it???

I'm sure No.8 is out there waiting for you though :)

I reckon, on the average day out, 1 in 6 Corrados will break down :) Now how did I arrive at the data for that little stat???

  12. Wow James, that looks awesome. I just love red Corrados!

Glad it's running OK. I have a few more refinements in the pipeline, should make it even smoother!

I drove a MK2 VR6 (thanks to GVK!) that is running OBD2, and it was leagues ahead of OBD1. So looks like that'll be my next plan. Just sooooo smoooooth on part throttle, and the idle is miles better. Kev's been trying to convince us for ages that it's the way forward, and he's right again :D

Good work anyway. Can't wait to see your motor, planning on going to any shows soon?

  13.

Good opportunity to fit a LSD, when doing the clutch/flywheel

Go on Dave, you know you want to :luvlove:

I think in was Corozin (John) who said, "you haven't really driven a front wheel drive car until you've tried one with an LSD" and he was definately right. Thanks for a drive in yours Gary, MK2 VR6 is an awesome combination. So well sorted and handled really well, think my brain was trying to get out of my ear when you gave it some around that island :D
