  1. Sounds reasonable. Yes, the ABS must be fully functional to pass the MOT.
  2. I don't think early and late MAFs are interchangeable. They have a completely different method of operation, and require a different connector plug.
  3. Yes, dealer part only. Apparently it's come down in price slightly too, only £35 now .. ! That's always the first pipe to go. It usually splits down by the cylinder head, caused by a combination of old age and flex caused by sloppy engine mounts. When mine went the guy managed to cut an inch off the end of the hose and re-attach it so I could continue my journey, I guess your recovery guy either didn't bother or your hose was split in a different place ..
  4. Indeed, the only Corrado that's "easy" to tune out of the box is the only forced induction car - the G60. Like all forced induction cars you can just turn up the big boost knob till it breaks..
  5. Chuck the seats out! ;)
  6. Bet you won't. When it's £30/litre you will be looking for a push bike.
  7. It's not a law, it's a guideline, and I think you'll find that you could have been done for "dwd" for the same thing for years. They just didn't explicitly write it down in the highway code as a "bad idea" till now. DWD is the crime that applies in all the cases of so-called "new laws" that have come out in recent years. Mobile phones/smoking/reading a map/picking your nose.. all can be deemed as DWD if it causes you to have an accident. Even tuning the radio.
  8. You are correct the MPG can drop if the MAF is dodgy. IIRC the very late VR6 MAF is available from GSF, it's the early hot-wire type that's not. There's a "definitive" thread somewhere about it, I don't remember the details now.
  9. Got a picture of the adjuster? I don't know, I was just guessing, but I assumed that there would be a locking nut or some other mechanism for clamping it in place once you've adjusted it.
  10. I'd guess there's either no locking nut there, or you didn't tighten it enough! ;)
  11. Don't think I was ever serious enough to actually look in any details, and anyway a full exhaust system for a Corrado will cost £1200, so I'd never be able to claim I drive a sensible car.. I know the LC has seriously expensive parts, considering what it's based on, but hey, it was the right era for me. For the same reason I like the Corrado I think - I've a soft spot for the LC - I have no doubt there are bigger/faster/gruntier/reliablier/whatever cars, for similar money.
  12. Ok cheers, will have a look tomorrow if I'm home in daylight .. !
  13. Do you happen to know roughly where the sender unit is on the gearbox? Is it a git to change? There's a few on ebay, might be worth a punt if I don't have to take the whole car apart to swap it... (And if the gearbox isn't going to lose all it's oil in doing so! :) )
  14. The missus' 2001 1.4 GLX 206 has lost it's speedo and mileometer, just wondering if anyone knows whether it's a cable drive (read cheap) or an electronic drive system (read expensive)? Looks like the speedo jumps a little when you turn the ignition on, so it doesn't appear that the dash end has lost power.
  15. Might be worth checking the ABS relays. Like I say, it'll chuck an error if it loses power and disable the ABS (obviously).
  16. Fail, I'm sure. How are you keeping the battery charged, or the water pump running without the v-belt? I assume it's a separate belt on your engine?
  17. Should be a 1H0 907 379E (* - at least the "E" rev was what was fitted to my '95 VR6). Sounds like you need to check out the power supply relays for the ABS controller if you had one of those and it wasn't showing up in VAG-COM (assuming that you can get to the main ECU of course).
  18. Changing the tappets is a relatively simple job, changing the timing chains is a pretty large job, so have a dig around on the knowledge base - I think there's a procedure someone kindly documented. Be prepared..

    Bloody hell

I feel a whole new branch of law coming on: sentencing scales for people caught doing 172mph in various circumstances .. ;) No sensible observer of the road scene ever claimed that "speed kills" as a blanket policy, it's merely the government and the media that see it that way. (The same media that's permanently fuelled by coke and points disgusted frowns at Pete and wotserface for the odd transgression.) Even the police accurately report whether speed was the "cause", just a "contributory factor" in an accident or whether it was completely incidental. Having taken the liberal approach so far, I feel the need to add a "but" - and here it is - but there has to be a limit. Not everyone can manage a car at 150mph, and not every car is safe there. Personally I believe that if there is not a single car/pedestrian/cyclist/motorbike/badger within 1 mile of you, go as fast as you like. That means on motorways, over one mile from any junctions, with *very* light traffic, good weather and good visibility. Anywhere else you're taking the piss...

Indeed, that's a whole other kettle of wriggly sealife.

    Bloody hell

The problem with speeds like this is other people's expectations. It would be perfectly reasonable for someone to pull out in front of a car they spot in the distance, not realising that it would be right on top of them before they'd even straightened up and could see it in their mirrors properly. For sure the car is capable of being perfectly stable and safe at 170+, but other people just don't expect it to be going that fast. In germany maybe people *expect* cars to be gaining on them at a net speed of 100+ mph, but not here.

I bet he gets banned for years, 11 points, and a huge fine aswell. You think the courts will have sympathy for a guy driving a high end Porsche? I don't.

    PAS too light!?

So good he posted it twice! Might be the pump. It is supposed to keep the output pressure the same regardless of engine revs but if that mechanism breaks down it would produce overpressure at anything more than idle speed.
  24. No, it's fine, it's only generating a couple of hundred milliamps anyway, so a few % loss between the ciggie lighter and the battery is neither here nor there. At best these trickle chargers are enough to prevent the battery from being actually drained when there's sunlight on them though, it'll still creep towards flat overnight.. don't expect to leave the car for months on end and still have a full battery!
